The objective of this study was to evaluate the validity and clinical impact of positron emission tomography (PET) or positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) using ...18-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose in the posttherapy surveillance of patients with endometrial carcinoma. Eighty-eight patients previously treated for histopathologically diagnosed endometrial adenocarcinoma underwent 99 PET or PET/CT scans at follow-up visits at Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, between 2001 and 2007. The standard of reference for tumor recurrence consisted of histopathologic confirmation or follow-up information at least 6 months after PET or PET/CT. Of the 88 patients, 24 underwent PET (n = 11) and/or PET/CT (n = 14) scans due to suspected disease recurrence. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of PET and/or PET/CT in detecting recurrence in these patients were 100%, 83.3%, 96%, 95%, and 100%, respectively. Especially, PET/CT revealed true-positive findings in three patients with elevated tumor markers but negative CT findings. The remaining 64 patients underwent PET (n = 8) and/or PET/CT (n = 66) as part of routine posttherapy surveillance; these patients were asymptomatic, with no evidence of disease. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, PPV, and NPV of PET and/or PET/CT in detecting recurrence in these patients were all 100%. Clinical decisions on treatment were changed in 14 (21.9%) patients by introducing PET or PET/CT into their conventional posttherapy surveillance program. PET and/or PET/CT were highly effective in discriminating true recurrence in patients with suspected recurrence, highly sensitive in detecting recurrence in asymptomatic patients, and had impacts on clinical decisions in a considerable portion of patients.
Scedosporium spp. is the most common mold infection in pneumonia resulting from near‐drowning. Three fatal scedosporiosis cases developed after solid organ transplantation, probably transmitted from ...the nearly‐drowned donor. One heart transplant recipient and two kidney transplant recipients developed fatal scedosporiosis following deceased donor transplantation from the same donor, a nearly‐drowned victim of a suicide attempt. Genotypically, indistinguishable strains of Scedosporium auratiacum were recovered from the three recipients. Two liver transplant recipients from the same donor received prophylactic voriconazole without any subsequent signs of infection. To determine the safety of donation from nearly‐drowned donors, a national traceback investigation was also performed of the causes of deaths in all transplant recipients who received organs from drowned donors between 2001 and 2013. Over 13 years, 2600 deceased donor transplants were performed in Korea. Among these 2600 deceased donor transplants, 27 (1%) victims of drowning donated their organs. From these 27 donors, 84 patients received organ transplants and 18 died, including the above three. We found no microbiologic evidence of invasive mold transmission from the nearly‐drowned donors to the other 15 recipients. Although disseminated infection in the donor could not be demonstrated by culture, undiagnosed disseminated donor infection and transmission of Scedosporium spp. should be considered in near‐drowning events.
The authors describe their experience of one heart recipient and two kidney recipients with fatal scedosporiosis following deceased donor transplantation from the same donor, a nearly drowned victim of a suicide attempt.

Separating structure and electrons in VO2Above 341 kelvin—not far from room temperature—bulk vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a metal. But as soon as the material is cooled below 341 kelvin, VO2 turns into ...an insulator and, at the same time, changes its crystal structure from rutile to monoclinic. Lee et al. studied the peculiar behavior of a heterostructure consisting of a layer of VO2 placed underneath a layer of the same material that has a bit less oxygen. In the VO2 layer, the structural transition occurred at a higher temperature than the metal-insulator transition. In between those two temperatures, VO2 was a metal with a monoclinic structure—a combination that does not occur in the absence of the adjoining oxygen-poor layer.Science, this issue p. 1037The metal-insulator transition in correlated materials is usually coupled to a symmetry-lowering structural phase transition. This coupling not only complicates the understanding of the basic mechanism of this phenomenon but also limits the speed and endurance of prospective electronic devices. We demonstrate an isostructural, purely electronically driven metal-insulator transition in epitaxial heterostructures of an archetypal correlated material, vanadium dioxide. A combination of thin-film synthesis, structural and electrical characterizations, and theoretical modeling reveals that an interface interaction suppresses the electronic correlations without changing the crystal structure in this otherwise correlated insulator. This interaction stabilizes a nonequilibrium metallic phase and leads to an isostructural metal-insulator transition. This discovery will provide insights into phase transitions of correlated materials and may aid the design of device functionalities.
The Reactor Experiment for Neutrino Oscillation (RENO) has been taking electron antineutrino (ν¯e) data from the reactors in Yonggwang, Korea, using two identical detectors since August 2011. Using ...roughly 500 live days of data through January 2013 we observe 290 775 (31 514) reactor ν¯e candidate events with 2.8% (4.9%) background in the near (far) detector. The observed visible positron spectra from the reactor ν¯e events in both detectors show a discrepancy around 5 MeV with regard to the prediction from the current reactor ν¯e model. Based on a far-to-near ratio measurement using the spectral and rate information, we have obtained sin22θ13=0.082±0.009(stat.)±0.006(syst.) and |Δmee2|=2.62−0.23+0.21(stat.)−0.13+0.12(syst.)×10−3 eV2.
The COSINE-100 dark matter search experiment is an array of NaI(Tl) crystal detectors located in the Yangyang Underground Laboratory (Y2L). To understand measured backgrounds in the NaI(Tl) crystals ...we have performed Monte Carlo simulations using the Geant4 toolkit and developed background models for each crystal that consider contributions from both internal and external sources, including cosmogenic nuclides. The background models are based on comparisons of measurement data with Monte Carlo simulations that are guided by a campaign of material assays and are used to evaluate backgrounds and identify their sources. The average background level for the six crystals (70 kg total mass) that are studied is 3.5 counts/day/keV/kg in the (2–6) keV energy interval. The dominant contributors in this energy region are found to be

We report a fuel-dependent reactor electron antineutrino (νover ¯_{e}) yield using six 2.8 GW_{th} reactors in the Hanbit nuclear power plant complex, Yonggwang, Korea. The analysis uses 850 666 ...νover ¯_{e} candidate events with a background fraction of 2.0% acquired through inverse beta decay (IBD) interactions in the near detector for 1807.9 live days from August 2011 to February 2018. Based on multiple fuel cycles, we observe a fuel ^{235}U dependent variation of measured IBD yields with a slope of (1.51±0.23)×10^{-43} cm^{2}/fission and measure a total average IBD yield of (5.84±0.13)×10^{-43} cm^{2}/fission. The hypothesis of no fuel-dependent IBD yield is ruled out at 6.6σ. The observed IBD yield variation over ^{235}U isotope fraction does not show significant deviation from the Huber-Mueller (HM) prediction at 1.3 σ. The measured fuel-dependent variation determines IBD yields of (6.15±0.19)×10^{-43} and (4.18±0.26)×10^{-43} cm^{2}/fission for two dominant fuel isotopes ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu, respectively. The measured IBD yield per ^{235}U fission shows the largest deficit relative to the HM prediction. Reevaluation of the ^{235}U IBD yield per fission may mostly solve the reactor antineutrino anomaly (RAA) while ^{239}Pu is not completely ruled out as a possible contributor to the anomaly. We also report a 2.9 σ correlation between the fractional change of the 5 MeV excess and the reactor fuel isotope fraction of ^{235}U.
A novel illumination normalisation (IN) method using a convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed. The proposed network is composed of the local pattern extraction (LPE) and illumination ...elimination (IE) layers. The LPE layers model the relationships between the pixels in each local region in order to handle various types of local shadow and shading in the face image. Based on the commonly used assumption about the illumination field, the IE layers generate illumination-insensitive ratio images by calculating the ratio between the output pairs produced from the LPE layers. The final feature map obtained by combining the ratio images can possess an improved discriminative ability for face recognition (FR). For training the proposed network, the results produced by the Weber fraction-based IN methods as ground truths are utilised. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed network performs better in terms of FR accuracy compared with the conventional non-CNN-based method and it can be combined with any CNN-based face classifier.
The RENO experiment has analyzed about 500 live days of data to observe an energy dependent disappearance of reactor νover ¯_{e} by comparing their prompt signal spectra measured in two identical ...near and far detectors. In the period between August of 2011 and January of 2013, the far (near) detector observed 31 541 (290 775) electron antineutrino candidate events with a background fraction of 4.9% (2.8%). The measured prompt spectra show an excess of reactor νover ¯_{e} around 5 MeV relative to the prediction from a most commonly used model. A clear energy and baseline dependent disappearance of reactor νover ¯_{e} is observed in the deficit of the observed number of νover ¯_{e}. Based on the measured far-to-near ratio of prompt spectra, we obtain sin^{2}2θ_{13}=0.082±0.009(stat)±0.006(syst) and |Δm_{ee}^{2}|=2.62_{-0.23}^{+0.21}(stat)_{-0.13}^{+0.12}(syst)×10^{-3} eV^{2}.
