In preterm birth, the immature retina can develop a potentially blinding disorder of the eye known as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). The vaso-proliferative phase of ROP begins at an approximate ...postmenstrual age (PMA) of 32 weeks. There is little or no evidence of an association between ROP development and retinal status in the early vaso-proliferative phase. We aimed to evaluate the retinal vascular findings of infants at 33-34 weeks PMA to determine their risk of ROP. We reviewed 130 serial wide-field retinal images from 65 preterm infants born before the gestational age of 31 weeks. ROP occurred more frequently in infants having a leading vascular edge within posterior Zone II. This was in contrast to normal infants, who are characterized by complete retinal vascularization up to Zone II at 34 weeks PMA. The probability of ROP development in preterm infants with retinal edge hemorrhage was 24.58 times higher than in preterm infants without retinal edge hemorrhage. Eyes with ROP that required treatment showed significantly delayed retinal vascularization accompanied by pre-plus disease. In conclusion, retinal status in the early vaso-proliferation phase might determine the risk of ROP.
This study was performed to reveal dietary patterns and age-related macular degeneration risk association in general Korean population. A retrospective cross-sectional database analysis using the ...data collected from January 2010 to December 2011 at a Korea nationwide survey was conducted. The present analysis was performed from December 2016 to November 2017. Detailed grading with fundus photographs was performed by observers blinded to the patient characteristics. The current study focused on subjects forty year and older who had fundus photographs that is assessable from at least one eye (7,899 participants). Participants were excluded if they reported extreme energy intake (142 participants) or if they were likely to have changed dietary behavior (1,171 participants), or with missing data (n = 764). After exclusion, 5,843 participants data were analyzed in the current study. As the result, 6.8% of the participants exhibited early stages of age-related macular degeneration and 0.6% exhibited late stages. Furthermore, relatively more frequent fish consumption was associated reduced odds of early age-related macular degeneration when comparing the third quartile with the first quartile groups, however, relatively more frequent legume consumption was associated with reduced odds of late age-related macular degeneration when comparing the third quartile with the first quartile groups. In conclusion, the current study insists that the diet pattern rich in fish and legume might have protective effect against age-related macular degeneration in Korean population.
We propose a sequential method to extract 3-dimensional information for mapping by using sensor fusion of two sonar devices. The 3D reconstruction using sonar images from forward-looking multibeam ...sonar (FLMS) is an ill-posed problem due to the loss of elevation angle; thus we used an additional sonar and its complementary information. Our approach is to utilize geometric constraints between the installation of two sonar devices and complementary characteristics such as a different angle of the acoustic beams and data acquisition method. The fusion process proceeds in three stages. The first stage is to build a likelihood map using geometric constraints of the installation between two sonar devices. The second stage is to calculate the feasible elevation angle of the FLMS. The elevation angle of FLMS is limited by its vertical beam spreading angle, which can be represented by particles. The third stage is Monte-Carlo experiment using the generated particles by computing the weight, and correct the data of FLMS. To verify the proposed method, we applied the proposed method in simulations and experiments in engineering basin with an AUV.
This study aims to analyze the types and cost of infertility care provided in a clinical setting to examine the changes of healthcare utilization for infertility after the 2017 launch of assisted ...reproductive technology (ART) health insurance coverage in South Korea. Health Insurance Review Assessment-National Patient Sample data from 2016 and 2018 were analyzed comparatively. Data related to receiving medical service under the International Classification of Diseases 10th revision code N97 (female infertility) or N46 (male infertility) at least once were analyzed, including patients' characteristics and healthcare utilization (type of healthcare facility and treatment approach). Between 2016 and 2018, the percentage of patients aged 30-34 receiving infertility care dropped; the percentages of patients in older age groups increased. The number of female patients remained comparable, whereas the number of male patients increased by 23%. Average visits per patient increased by about 1 day from 2016 to 2018. Total annual infertility care claim cost increased from $665,391.05 to $3,214,219.48; the per-patient annual cost increased from $114.76 to $522.38. The number of claims and cost of treatment and surgery increased markedly, as did the number of claims and cost of gonadotropins. With its focus on health insurance coverage of ART and results demonstrating increases in medical services, medications, cost, and patient utilization, this study reveals the significant effects of national health policies on the treatment, cost, and management of infertility.

The prevalence of myopia has been increasing worldwide. Its causes are not completely clear, although genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a role. Data were collected by the Korean ...Military Manpower Administration. Frequency analysis was used for comparisons of general characteristics. Pearson's chi-square tests and logistic regression analysis were used to verify the correlations between possible risk factors and the prevalence of myopia or high myopia. The prevalence of myopia (50.6-53.0%) and high myopia (11.3-12.9%) increased each year. These tended to be the highest in patients born in spring, and decreased in the following order according to education level: 4- or 6-year university education or more, high school education or less, and 2- to 3-year college education. Moreover, the prevalence of myopia and high myopia was significantly higher in patients ≤ 60 kg and with a body mass index ≤ 18.5 kg/m
. The prevalence of high myopia was significantly higher in taller patients (≥175 cm). The prevalence of myopia and high myopia increased each year in Korean young adult men and was associated with birth season, education level, height, weight, and body mass index. Tall, lean men were more likely to have high myopia.
This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between ophthalmologic factors and the serologic indicator soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt-1): placental growth factor (PlGF) ratio in patients ...with preeclampsia using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCT-A). A total of 52 pregnant patients (104 eyes) diagnosed with preeclampsia were recruited during their hospital stay. The associations between the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio and chorioretinal measurements, including the choroidal thickness (CT), foveal avascular zone, vascular density, and ganglion cell layer+ were evaluated. Central and nasal subfield CT of the left eye (p = 0.039; p = 0.010) and nasal subfield CT of the right eye (p = 0.042) were lower in the high sFlt-1/PlGF ratio group (≥38). Pearson's correlation test showed a negative correlation between the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio and central subfield CT; however, this was not statistically significant (p = 0.648). Linear regression analysis revealed a significant association between the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio and central subfield CT (β coefficient, -6.66; p = 0.01) and between sFlt-1 and central subfield CT (β coefficient, -5.65; p = 0.00). Thus, an increase in the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio resulted in a decrease in central subfield CT.

This retrospective study evaluated changes in the central retinal thickness (CRT) and the risk factors for neovascular glaucoma (NVG) after intravitreal bevacizumab injection under a pro re nata ...(PRN) regimen for macular oedema in 57 eyes with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). The clinical characteristics at the time of NVG diagnosis were assessed, and baseline and final clinical characteristics and mean CRT values at 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up evaluations were recorded. The incidence of NVG was 21.1%, with the neovascular group (12 eyes) showing poor baseline and final visual acuity, a higher incidence of baseline ischaemic-type CRVO and subretinal fluid, a higher mean CRT at the 1-month follow-up, and a higher number of intravitreal bevacizumab injections during the 6-month follow-up. Nine eyes with NVG (75%) showed a mean CRT < 300 μm at the time of diagnosis. An ischaemic CRVO and higher CRT at the 1-month follow-up were related to the development of NVG in the multivariate analysis. Thus, NVG development in CRVO patients treated with intravitreal bevacizumab injections was associated with an ischaemic CRVO and elevated CRT at the 1-month follow-up; PRN bevacizumab regimens based on CRT or control of macular oedema did not completely prevent NVG development.
We present herein a three-dimensional (3D) mapping method in one-way rectilinear scanning with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) equipped with a forward looking sonar (FLS) and a profiling sonar ...(PS). Three-dimensional reconstruction using sonar with a finite beam width is an ill-posed problem, and additional constraints also need to be considered. Our approach involves an additional sonar and fuse acoustic measurements provided by the two sonar sensors. The FLS has a high resolution in the horizontal scan but has a uncertainty in the vertical scan. Meanwhile, the PS provides a reliable vertical profile, but its beam width is extremely narrow. An initial map is generated by the FLS and refined by combining the PS vertical scan data. To demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method, we conducted tests in a water tank and also at sea. Finally, we presented the results of the proposed method gathered by an AUV in the tests.
Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a vision-threatening pathology. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is useful for evaluating retinal damage and visual prognosis in patients with RRD. Outer ...retinal undulation (ORU) is often observed on preoperative OCT in RRD. Therefore, we evaluated the correlation between ORU seen on preoperative OCT and pre/post-operative factors in RRD. Patients with RRD (114 eyes) underwent reattachment surgery and ≥ 6 months of follow-up. According to the condition of the macula on preoperative OCT, cases were divided into macula-on RRD (65 eyes) or macula-off RRD (49 eyes). Patients were classified into acute (< 10 days), subacute (10-30 days), and chronic (> 30 days) symptom duration groups. Clinical findings, histories, and relationships with OCT findings, including ORU, were analyzed. Subacute symptom duration was significantly associated with ORU on preoperative OCT (p = 0.001) and had a higher prevalence of ORU (73.7%) than did acute (OR = 4.48) or chronic (OR = 7.467) durations. Ellipsoid zone (EZ) disruption was significantly associated with poorer best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) than normal EZ integrity at 6 months postoperatively (p = 0.012). ORU on preoperative OCT suggests a 10-30 days morbidity duration in RRD. EZ integrity is useful for predicting postoperative BCVA in macula-off RRD.
Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a hypertensive disorder characterised by systemic vascular resistance and endothelial dysfunction. It is known to influence choroidal thickness (CT). No previous studies have ...explored the antepartum and postpartum changes in CT with respect to the protein-creatinine ratio (PCR), a measure of proteinuria that is a clinical hallmark of PE. This study evaluated the correlations between antepartum and postpartum CT and the PCR in patients with PE. In this retrospective study, sixty-six eyes (66 patients) were analysed. The patients were divided into two groups according to the median PCR value (2.36 mg/mg): low PCR group (< 2.36 mg/mg) and high PCR group (≥ 2.36 mg/mg). Ophthalmologic clinical data were collected and assessed. We observed higher antepartum CT and higher mean arterial pressure in high PCR group than in low PCR group. Moreover, postpartum CT decreased significantly in high PCR group. In the multivariate analysis, CT changes were correlated with antepartum CT and antepartum PCR after logarithm transformation. In conclusion, a greater decrease in CT was observed in high PCR group than in low PCR group. Further, the antepartum PCR showed a correlation with the extent of CT reduction.
