Important tools in preventing the spread of COVID-19 include contract tracing and adherence to isolation guidelines after a positive diagnosis of COVID-19. This is especially relevant among college ...students who are often away from support systems at home, living in high-density housing, and may not experience serious symptoms from COVID-19 while still contagious.
As text message-based interventions have been found effective in addressing health behaviors among young adults, we conducted formative research to explore how text messaging could support students in adhering to isolation guidelines.
A convenience sample of college students (n = 104) at one university. Methods: An online survey gathered students' perceptions of helpful components to include in a text message-based intervention. Results: Students expressed interest in receiving text messages with support, encouragement, and resources during their time in isolation following a COVID-19 diagnosis.
Based on the results, we developed a text message-based intervention designed to provide motivation, support, distraction, and information on resources.
Nigeria has one of the highest under-five mortality rates in the world. Identifying the causes of these deaths is crucial to inform changes in policy documents, design and implementation of ...appropriate interventions to reduce these deaths. This study aimed to provide national and zonal-level estimates of the causes of under-five death in Nigeria in the 2013-2018 periods.
We conducted retrospective inquiries into the cause of deaths of 948 neonates and 2,127 children aged 1-59 months as identified in the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS). The verbal autopsy asked about signs and symptoms during the final illness. The Physician Coded Verbal Autopsy (PCVA) and Expert Algorithm Verbal Autopsy (EAVA) methods were employed to assign the immediate and underlying cause of deaths to all cases.
For the analysis, sampling weights were applied to accommodate non-proportional allocation. Boys accounted for 56 percent of neonatal deaths and 51.5 percent of the 1-59-months old deaths. About one-quarter of under-5 mortality was attributed to neonatal deaths, and 50 percent of these neonatal deaths were recorded within 48 h of delivery. Overall, 84 percent of the under-5 deaths were in the northern geopolitical zones. Based on the two methods for case analysis, neonatal infections (sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis) were responsible for 44 percent of the neonatal deaths, followed by intrapartum injury (PCVA: 21 percent vs. EAVA: 29 percent). The three main causes of death in children aged 1-59 months were malaria (PCVA: 23 percent vs. EAVA: 35 percent), diarrhoea (PCVA: 17 percent vs. EAVA: 23 percent), and pneumonia (PCVA: 10 percent vs. EAVA: 12 percent). In the North West, where the majority of under-5 (1-59 months) deaths were recorded, diarrhoea was the main cause of death (PCVA: 24.3 percent vs. EAVA: 30 percent).
The causes of neonatal and children aged 1-59 months deaths vary across the northern and southern regions. By homing on the specific causes of mortality by region, the study provides crucial information that may be useful in planning appropriately tailored interventions to significantly reduce under-five deaths in Nigeria.

Lagenidium deciduum is an oomycete that can cause infections in mammals that present similarly to pythiosis and mucormycosis. Most of the existing case reports have occurred in canines and have been ...fatal. In animals, medical therapy has not been successful, so surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment. Lagenidium sp. infections in humans are rare. There is only one case of a human Lagenidium sp. infection in the literature, and it presented as an ocular infection. The human ocular infection was resistant to medical therapy and required a penetrating keratoplasty for cure. Additional reports of effective therapy are needed to guide management of this emerging pathogen. We present the first case of a cutaneous Lagenidium deciduum infection in a human patient, which is also the first documented case of a Lagenidium deciduum infection in an immunocompromised host of any species.
An 18-year-old female with relapsed acute myeloid leukemia, awaiting a haploidentical stem cell transplant, presented with erythematous cutaneous lesions on her left hip and bilateral buttocks that enlarged and blackened over several days. About 1 week later, boil-like lesions appeared on her bilateral buttocks. The skin lesions were initially presumed to be bacterial in origin, so the patient was treated with clindamycin and cefepime with little improvement. Upon further investigation, fungal cultures and skin biopsies revealed aseptate hyphae, so the patient was switched to isavuconazole and amphotericin B due to concern for mucormycosis. Phenotypic characterization and DNA sequencing were performed by the Fungus Testing Laboratory, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, which identified the causal fungal organism as Lagenidium deciduum. All of her cutaneous lesions were surgically excised, and the patient was treated with micafungin, terbinafine, doxycycline, and azithromycin. Micafungin and terbinafine were continued until she achieved engraftment post-transplant.
We report the first successful treatment of a human Lagenidium infection in an immunocompromised host through a combination of aggressive surgical excision and prolonged antifungal therapy during the prolonged neutropenia associated with allogeneic stem cell transplant. Prompt diagnosis and management may prevent disseminated oomycosis.

Nigeria's under-five health outcomes have improved over the years, but the mortality rates remain unacceptably high. The qualitative component of Nigeria's 2019 verbal and social autopsy (VASA) ...showed that caregivers' health beliefs about causes of illnesses and efficacious treatment options contribute to non-use/delay in use of facility-based healthcare for under-five children. This study explored how these health beliefs vary across zones and how they shape how caregivers seek healthcare for their under-five children.
Data for this study come from the qualitative component of the 2019 Nigeria VASA, comprising 69 interviews with caregivers of under-five children who died in the five-year period preceding the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS); and 24 key informants and 48 focus group discussions (FGDs) in 12 states, two from each of the six geo-political zones. The transcripts were coded using predetermined themes on health beliefs from the 2019 VASA (qualitative component) using NVivo.
The study documented zonal variation in belief in traditional medicine, biomedicine, spiritual causation of illnesses, syncretism, and fatalism, with greater prevalence of beliefs discouraging use of facility-based healthcare in the southern zones. Driven by these beliefs and factors such as availability, affordability, and access to and perceived quality of care in health facilities, caregivers often choose one or a combination of traditional medicines, care from medicine vendors, and faith healing. Most use facility-based care as the last option when other methods fail.
Caregivers' health beliefs vary by zones, and these beliefs influence when and whether they will use facility-based healthcare services for their under-five children. In Nigeria's northern zones, health beliefs are less likely to deter caregivers from using facility-based healthcare services, but they face other barriers to accessing facility-based care. Interventions seeking to reduce under-five deaths in Nigeria need to consider subnational differences in caregivers' health beliefs and the healthcare options they choose based on those beliefs.

Background
Nigeria suffers from one of the world’s highest child mortality rates, with about 900,000 deaths in a single year, despite being classified as a middle-income country. Over the past few ...years, substantial efforts have been made to reduce child mortality, with under-five mortality declining by 31.6% between 1990 and 2018. However, this decline is slower than needed to reduce child mortality significantly. This study presents the social autopsy component of the 2019 verbal and social autopsy (VASA) survey to provide an in-depth understanding of the social determinants of under-five mortality in Nigeria.
Methods
The study was a cross-sectional inquiry into the social determinants of neonatal and 1-59 months child deaths from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) weighted to represent the Nigerian population. The social autopsy survey asked about maternal care for neonates and 1-59 months children during the final illness.
Results
Child mortality in Nigeria in children aged 1-59 months is strongly associated with levels of wealth, place of residence, and maternal education. The association of these same socio-economic factors with neonatal mortality is weaker. While there were significant associations with wealth quintiles and geopolitical zones, higher maternal education was not significantly associated with lower neonatal death rates. Maternal complications in pregnancy and/or labour and delivery were common and strongly associated with stillbirths and deaths in the first two days. Severity scores at the inception of the illnesses did not show differences between children who only received informal care versus those who went to formal care providers. The main barriers to care were distance, cost, transport, and the need to travel at night, and these barriers were interlinked. More distant facilities usually required vehicle transport, which was expensive for low-income families. Travelling for an emergency at night was even more difficult in terms of finding and paying for transport and involving problems with insecurity and bad roads.
Conclusions
The family, community, and health system factors related to neonatal and 1-59 months child deaths in Nigeria were highlighted in this study. Deaths were commonly associated with numerous factors, each of which could contribute to the sequence of events resulting in a preventable death.
The manufacturing industry must diverge from a 'take, make and waste' linear production paradigm towards more circular economies. Truly sustainable, circular economies are intrinsically tied to ...renewable resource flows, where vast quantities need to be available at a central
point of consumption. Abundant, renewable carbon feedstocks are often structurally complex and recalcitrant, requiring costly pretreatment to harness their potential fully. As such, the heat integration of supercritical water gasification (SCWG) and aerobic gas fermentation unlocks the promise
of renewable feedstocks such as lignin. This study models the technoeconomics and life cycle assessment (LCA) for the sustainable production of the commodity chemicals, isopropanol and acetone, from gasified Kraft black liquor. The investment case is underpinned by rigorous process modelling
informed by published continuous gas fermentation experimental data. Time series analyses support the price forecasts for the solvent products. Furthermore, a Monte Carlo simulation frames an uncertain boundary for the technoeconomic model. The technoeconomic assessment (TEA) demonstrates
that production of commodity chemicals priced at ~US$1000 per tonne is within reach of aerobic gas fermentation. In addition, owing to the sequestration of biogenic carbon into the solvent products, negative greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are achieved within a cradle-to-gate LCA framework.
As such, the heat integrated aerobic gas fermentation platform has promise as a best-in-class technology for the production of a broad spectrum of renewable commodity chemicals.
Aims
The Tony Hillis Unit (THU) is a locked rehabilitation unit for men aged 18–65 years with Treatment Resistant Psychosis, with or without mild personality disorders; drug and alcohol misuse; and ...challenging behaviour. The multi-disciplinary team including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists and specialist pharmacists offer service-users a holistic, personalised and pragmatic management plan to facilitate an improvement in their level of functioning. This service evaluation aimed to review the effectiveness of our intervention as a unit as defined by functional outcome at six months pre- and post- admission.
Methods
A retrospective, mirror-image study design was used to collect data. Data were obtained from South London & Maudsley's Electronic Patient Journey System (ePJS) records. All patients discharged from THU over a two-year period, from May 2019 to May 2021, were considered in the study (n = 25 patients). Two service users died during the evaluation period and were excluded. A further service user was excluded as he had an admission length less than 28 days. Variables recorded included patient demographics and the presence of biopsychosocial interventions at THU including Clozapine initiation, engagement in weekly 1:1 occupational therapy (OT) and 1:1 psychology sessions. The functional status at six months pre-admission and post-discharge was defined by placement type, graded in terms of level of support; 1 = Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, 2 = Acute ward, 3 = Rehabilitation service/Prison, 4 = Care home, 5 = Supported accommodation and 6 = Independent living. The change in patient acuity pre- and post- THU was compared using Wilcoxon-signed rank test.
Results
23 service users were included in this evaluation. The average admission length was 365 days, and average age at admission was 38 years. The difference in patient acuity before and after THU intervention was statistically significant (P < 0.005), with an overall reduction in level of placement support required. The most common placement prior to admission was an acute ward, compared to a rehabilitation service six months after discharge. 60% of patients (n = 13) were newly initiated or re-titrated on Clozapine during their admission, with a further 4 patients already on Clozapine. 82% of patients engaged with 1:1 weekly OT and 72% engaged with 1:1 weekly psychology sessions.
Conclusion
This study demonstrates the effectiveness of our role as a locked rehabilitation unit. It outlines some of the key biopsychosocial interventions likely contributing to this, including initiation of Clozapine.

. To the precision of these measurements, no atmosphere or rings are detected for either object. The two objects measured here are among the smallest distant objects measured with the stellar occultation technique. In addition to these geometric constraints, the occultation measurements provide astrometric constraints for these two Centaurs at a higher precision than has been feasible by direct imaging. To supplement the occultation results, we also present an analysis of color photometry from the Pan-STARRS surveys to constrain the rotational light curve amplitudes and spectral colors of these two Centaurs. We recommend that future work focus on photometry to more deliberately constrain the objects’ colors and light curve amplitudes and on follow-on occultation efforts informed by this astrometry.

It is well settled that when the government uses the power of eminent domain to take private property for a public purpose, the government is required to pay the private land owner just compensation. ...Just compensation is the fair market value of the property. This is a difficult determination when the property does not contain unexplored mineral deposits; it is an especially difficult determination if the property does. When attempting to place a value on an unexplored mineral deposit, appraisers turn to three main methods: (1) the comparable sales approach, (2) the cost approach, and (3) the income capitalization approach. All of these methods have their pros and cons. This article explores each method and discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each. After each method is discussed, it is applied to an actual situation in Montana and discussed in that context. The final discussion includes an analysis of which method would work best in that situation and why.
