Economic growth is one of the most fundamental issues of policymakers of developed and developing countries. The aim of this study is to analyze the relations between agricultural and industrial production and economic growth in Turkey for the period of 1961-2017. The relationships between variables were analyzed using Johansen cointegration and Granger causality tests. According to the test results, it was found that there was a cointegration relationship between the variables. Furthermore, the results supported the first and third laws of Kaldor in Turkey were not reached. According to the test results, economic growth affects industrialization positively and industrialization negatively affects the agricultural sector. Finally, economic growth in the positively affects the agricultural sector, while the agricultural sector positively affects economic growth.
Through its characteristic of supporting export, economic growth and transition to high-quality labor force foreign direct investment is an important source of financing in developing countries. Besides, it is thought that in these countries foreign direct investment is also an important factor that decreases unemployment. Therefore, developing countries have entered into a race to attract foreign direct investments to their markets since the times when they started their capital needs through the process of financial liberalization in the 1980s. The aim of the study is to determine the effect of foreign direct investment on the unemployment rate in Turkey. In this context, analyzes are made by using ARDL bound test and Granger causality test based on Error Correction model with the data of 1991-2016 period. According to the results of ARDL bound test, it is found that there is a cointegration relationship. In addition, no statistically significant relationship is found between foreign direct investment and unemployment in the short term. However, a 1% increase in foreign direct investment in the long term increases unemployment by approximately 0.96%. In addition, according to the results of the Granger causality analysis based on the error correction model, there is a causality from direct foreign investments to unemployment in the long run.
The main purpose of this study is to examine the effects of total tourism demand as well as the effects of both foreign and domestic tourism demand (measured by overnight stays) on regional inflation ...in Turkey based on the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics regions classified by Turkish Statistical Institute. To obtain the region-specific effects of tourism demand on inflation, we used the Random Coefficient Regression developed by Swamy by using the annual panel data over the period between2004 and 2013. Before estimating Swamy Random Coefficients Regressions, we first tested the existence of cross-sectional dependence among the regions of Turkey. And then, based on the results of these tests, we examined the stationarity properties of variables by using second-generation panel unit root tests. The results of the study indicate that there are significant differences in regional effects of different forms of overnight stays on regional inflation. Also, the results show that the contribution of domestic overnight stays to overall and regional inflation is greater than that of foreign overnight stays. Thus, the findings of the study have significant importance in Turkey for designing tourism, industrialization, and monetary policies, particularly aiming to reduce the inflation by adopting inflation targeting regime.
This study aims to investigate the relationship between inflation and unemployment. For this purpose, Brazil, Indonesia, India, South Africa and Turkey, which are called fragile five, are examined. ...In the study, the variables between inflation and unemployment will be analysed with Kónya (2006) panel causality test with the help of the data of 1991-2019 period. According to the findings of the study, there is a negative causality from the unemployment rate to the inflation rate in India and a negative causality from the inflation rate to the unemployment rate in Turkey. There is no causality in other countries.
This study argues that Angela Carter’s The Passion of New Eve, published when the feminist revisionist myth-making movement was influential, is a paradigm-shifting narrative prefiguring the theory of ...gender as performance, which later gained popularity in the canon of contemporary women’s writing. Like the writer’s other subversive texts, it is a heterodox novel that anticipates the main lines of Judith Butler’s gender theory and provides fictional avatars for subsequent women writers. The key theme in Carter’s fiction is the loss of the sense of the norm regarding known sexual categories and traditional gender boundaries. Accordingly, the paper examines gender identity construction in terms of performativity and gender transitivity in The Passion of New Eve by interrogating the process of Evelyn’s forced sex transformation and Tristessa’s iconic characterization as a Hollywood “beauty queen,” to show how the author questions essentialist conceptions and authenticity of gendered subjectivity through her “self-contradictory” and gender-blurring characters.
Purpose - The study aims to determine whether there is a bidirectional causality relationship between health expenditures and per capita income in Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and ...Turkey (BRICS+T). Design/methodology/approach For that purpose, the 2000-2018 period data of the variables were tested with the Kónya (2006) panel causality test. Additionally, the causality relationships between public and private health expenditures and per capita income were also investigated in the study. Findings According to the analysis results, there is no statistically significant causality relationship from total health expenditures and public health expenditures to per capita income in the relevant countries. Besides, there is a unidirectional causality relationship from private health expenditures to per capita income only in Turkey. On the other hand, a unidirectional causality relationship from per capita income to total health expenditures in China, Russia, Turkey and South Africa and from per capita income to public health expenditures in India, Russia, Turkey and South Africa were determined. Consequently, a causality relationship from per capita income to private health expenditures was found out in Russia and Turkey. Originality/value The variables are tested for the first time for BRICS+T countries, vis-à-vis the period under consideration and the method used.
