Background: In Japan, few studies have examined suicide risk for five-year relative survival rates for cancer sites. Since five-year relative survival rates differ by sex, we aim to examine suicide ...risk for patients with cancer separately for men and women.Methods: We estimated the risk of suicide among patients with cancer by sex in Japan compared to the general population, using standardized mortality ratios (SMRs). Patients with cancer diagnosed between January 1, 1985–December 31, 2013 and registered in the Osaka Cancer Registry were followed-up with for up to 10 years. The outcome was suicide death. In addition, cancer sites were classified into three prognosis groups based on five-year relative survival rates: good (> 70%), moderate (40–70%), poor (< 40%).Results: Among 623 995 patients with cancer observed for 2 349 432 person-years, 1210 patients died by suicide (867 men and 343 women). The SMRs were almost equal for men (1.66, 95% CI, 1.55-1.77) and women (1.65, 95% CI, 1.48-1.83). SMRs for cancer prognosis groups were 1.01 (95% CI, 0.84-1.22) for men and 1.47 (95% CI, 1.24-1.73) for women in the good group, 1.53 (95% CI, 1.39-1.68) for men and 1.74 (95% CI, 1.47-2.05) for women in the moderate group, and 2.54 (95% CI, 2.27-2.85) for men and 1.87 (95% CI, 1.43-2.46) for women in the poor group.Conclusions: In this population, both sexes had higher suicide risk with poor prognosis, but the difference in SMRs between the good and poor groups was smaller for women than men.
We herein report a case of anaplastic carcinoma of the pancreas with remarkable intraductal tumor growth into the main pancreatic duct.A 76-year-old male was referred to our hospital for treatment of ...a pancreatic tumor.Preoperative examinations revealed a poorly defined tumor in the main pancreatic duct in the body of the pancreas,accompanied with severe dilatation of the main pancreatic duct,which was diagnosed as an intraductal papillary-mucinous neoplasm.We performed distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy.The pathological examination revealed that the tumor consisted of a mixture of anaplastic carcinoma(giant cell type)and adenocarcinoma in the pancreas.There was a papillary projecting tumor composed of anaplastic carcinoma in the dilated main pancreatic duct.The patient is now receiving chemotherapy because liver metastasis was detected 12 mo after surgery.In this case,we could observe a remarkable intraductal tumor growth into the main pancreatic duct.We also discuss the pathogenesis and characteristics of this rare tumor with specific tumor growth.
Numerous deep-seated landslides have occurred in southern Wakayama and Nara prefectures, with over 1,000 mm of rainfall caused by typhoon no.12 in 2011, which resulted in a great deal of damage. We ...need to consider future action for deep-seated landslides, and contemplate evacuation for the occurrence of deep-seated landslides as they have recently increased in incidence. Deep-seated landslides and the rainfall index are dominated by long-term rather than short-term rainfall indicators, but few concrete case studies are available. We studied C-band rainfall mesh data in the southern part of Nara Prefecture after typhoon no.12 to elucidate the rainfall index relevant to deep-seated landslides. We found that a deep-seated landslide happened around the end of the rainfall event after typhoon no.12, and that a deep-seated landslide occurred after 700-800 mm of rainfall fell in 48 hours with at least 900-1,000 mm of total rainfall. However, a clear relationship could not be found for rainfall totals of ≥ 1,400 mm. We did not find a clear relationship between the rainfall index and deep-seated landslides, although a correlation between a higher tendency for a large-scale landslide and a greater number of deep-seated landslides was confirmed in the medium-to long-term rainfall index. We found that the excess probability of rainfall is highly correlated with deep-seated landslide.
The reaction of the solid thin film of propene (C3H6) deposited on the silicon substrate at 10 K with cold H atoms (∼27 K) sprayed over the solid films was studied. Propane and 2-methylpentane were ...found to be the major and minor reaction products, respectively. The rate for the formation of C3H8 increased steeply with a decrease of temperature from 35 to 10 K. This is the general trend for the low-temperature tunneling reactions investigated in our laboratory. With an increase of temperature from 40 to 55 K, the yield of C3H8 showed a slow increase. This may be due to the replenishment of the reactant C3H6 molecules to the surface above ∼40 K (i.e., solid-phase diffusion). The yield of C3H8 from C3H6 was lower than that of C2H6 from C2H4. This may be due either to the hindrance of the proximity approach of the H atom to the C3H6 double bond by the presence of the methyl group and/or to the annihilation of the H atoms by the H-atom abstraction reaction with the reaction product C3H8 to form the s-C3H7 radical on the surface of the solid film.
The reaction of H atoms with SiH4 molecules deposited on the silicon substrate at 10 K led to the formation of Si2H6 as an intermediate and a thin solid product. The yields of reaction products ...increased with decrease of temperature from 50 to 10K. The film thickness of about 10−20 monolayers of SiH4 gave the highest yield of the solid product at 10 K. When the solid product formed at 10 K was further reacted with H atoms at 200 K, the growth of Si−Si bond network was observed. Analysis of the solid product by FT-IR and spectroscopic ellipsometry revealed that it has the structure similar to amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) formed by the plasma chemical vapor deposition.
