Bunched-beam collinear laser spectroscopy is performed on neutron deficient 52,53Fe prepared through in-flight separation followed by a gas stopping. This novel scheme is a major step to reach ...nuclides far from the stability line in laser spectroscopy. Differential mean-square charge radii δ$\langle$r2$\rangle$ of 52,53Fe are determined relative to stable 56Fe as δ$\langle$r2$\rangle$56,52=-0.034(13) fm2 and δ$\langle$r2$\rangle$56,53=-0.218(13) fm2, respectively, from the isotope shift of atomic hyperfine structures. The multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method is used to calculate atomic factors to deduce δ$\langle$r2$\rangle$. The values of δ$\langle$r2$\rangle$ exhibit a minimum at the N=28 neutron shell closure. The nuclear density functional theory with Fayans and Skyrme energy density functionals is used to interpret the data. The trend of δ$\langle$r2$\rangle$ along the Fe isotopic chain results from an interplay between single-particle shell structure, pairing, and polarization effects and provides important data for understanding the intricate trend in the δ$\langle$r2$\rangle$ of closed-shell Ca isotopes.
A search for the nonconservation of lepton flavor in the decay tau+/--->e+/-gamma has been performed with 2.07x10(8) e+e--->tau+tau- events collected by the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP II storage ...ring at a center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV. We find no evidence for a signal and set an upper limit on the branching ratio of Beta(tau+/--->e+/-gamma)<1.1x10(-7) at 90% confidence level.
Different Cu-Co-O mixtures (CCO) with cation ratios from 5:1 to 1:5 were investigated as conversion type electrodes in half cells against lithium counter electrodes. To achieve a nearly homogeneous ...distribution of the elements on the nanometre scale, the self-combustion method was employed. The electrochemical redox behavior of the single oxides and CCO were characterized with cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic cycling. These investigations showed different element specific electrochemical characteristics. Copper oxide was more stable with respect to cycling stability, while cobalt oxide had a higher specific capacity. The combination of both elements in ternary CCO leads to an improvement of the specific capacity and the cycling stability compared to the binary metal oxides of only copper and cobalt, respectively. This stabilization effect qualifies CCO as a promising model system to elucidate the underlying mechanisms in such composites with complex interactions between the different metals during conversion and in successive cycling.
Oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in low-density lipoproteins (LDL) trapped in the arterial intima plays a critical role in atherosclerosis. Though there have been many studies on the ...atherogenicity of oxidized derivatives of PUFA-esters of cholesterol, the effects of cholesteryl hemiesters (ChE), the oxidation end-products of these esters, have not been studied. Through lipidomics analyses we identified and quantified two ChE types in the plasma of cardiovascular disease patients and identified four ChE types in human endarterectomy specimens. Cholesteryl hemiazelate (ChA), the cholesteryl hemiester of azelaic acid (n-nonane-1,9-dioic acid), was the most prevalent ChE identified in both cases. Importantly human monocytes, monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) and neutrophils exhibit inflammatory features when exposed to sub-toxic concentrations of ChA in vitro. ChA increases the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and IL-6 and modulates the surface-marker profile of monocytes and MDM. In vivo, when zebrafish larvae were fed with a ChA-enriched diet they exhibited neutrophil and macrophage accumulation in the vasculature in a caspase 1- and cathepsin B-dependent manner. ChA also triggered lipid accumulation at the bifurcation sites of the vasculature of the zebrafish larvae and negatively impacted their life expectancy. We conclude that ChA has pro-atherogenic properties and can be considered part of a damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) in the development of atherosclerosis.
We search for invisible decays of the Upsilon(1S) meson using a sample of 91.4 x 10(6) Upsilon(3S) mesons collected at the BABAR/PEP-II B factory. We select events containing the decay Upsilon(3S) ...--> pi(+)pi(-)Upsilon(1S) and search for evidence of an undetectable Upsilon(1S) decay recoiling against the dipion system. We set an upper limit on the branching fraction B(Upsilon(1S) --> invisible) < 3.0 x 10(-4) at the 90% confidence level.
The aim of EXPERT is to obtain data on the long-term safety of riociguat in clinical practice. The most common AEs were dizziness (7%), dyspnea (5%), and edema (4%); the most common drug-related AEs ...were dizziness (4%), dyspepsia (2%), and hypotension (2%); the most common SAEs were right ventricular failure (3%), dyspnea (3%), and syncope (3%); and the most common AE with fatal outcome was right heart failure (2%).
We present improved measurements of the branching fraction B , the longitudinal polarization fraction f L , and the direct C P asymmetry A C P in the B meson decay channel B + → ρ + ρ 0 . The data ...sample was collected with the BABAR detector at SLAC. The results are B ( B + → ρ + ρ 0 ) = ( 23.7 ± 1.4 ± 1.4 ) × 10 − 6 , f L = 0.950 ± 0.015 ± 0.006 , and A C P = − 0.054 ± 0.055 ± 0.010 , where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Based on these results, we perform an isospin analysis and determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa phase angle α = arg ( − V t d V ∗ t b / V u d V ∗ u b ) to be ( 92.4 + 6.0 − 6.5 ) ° .
This volume investigates the development of the concepts and practices of “humanity” from the sixteenth century up to the present. By taking a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, the ...contributers focus on Europe as well as Europe’s relations to other world regions in the process that shaped “humanity”. They show how this emerging concept led to the overcoming of fundamental divisions in many spheres on the one hand and the formation of new hierarchies on the other.
