Form and Process in Music, 1300-2014: An Analytic Sampler draws together papers delivered at the 2014 meeting of the West Coast Conference of Music Theory and Analysis. The conference spanned an ...unusually wide spectrum of musical styles, including papers on European twelve-tone music after the Second World War, fourteenth-century music, pop music and jazz, the music of living composers, narrative and characterization, and the history of music theory. The title of the book reflects the large span of musical cultures that are represented within, but also accounts for the common thread through all of these essays, a strong emphasis on understanding the forms and processes of music through analysis. The reader will find within it a compendium of analytic techniques for numerous musical styles.
Discrepancies exist between theoretical and experimental opacity data for iron, at temperatures 180–195 eV and electron densities near 3 × 1022/cm3, relevant to the solar radiative-convective ...boundary. Another discrepancy, between theory and helioseismic measurements of the boundary’s location, would be ameliorated if the experimental opacity is correct. To address these issues, this paper details the first results from new experiments under development at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), using a different method to replicate the prior experimental conditions. In the NIF experiments, 64 laser beams indirectly heat a plastic-tamped rectangular iron-magnesium sample inside a gold cavity. Another 64 beams implode a spherical plastic shell to produce a continuum X-ray flash which backlights the hot sample. An X-ray spectrometer records the transmitted X-rays, the unattenuated X-rays passing around the sample, and the sample’s self-emission. From these data, X-ray transmission spectra are inferred, showing Mg K-shell and Fe L-shell X-ray transitions from plasma at a temperature of ~150 eV and electron density of ~8 × 1021/cm3. These conditions are similar to prior Z measurements which agree better with theory. The NIF transmission data show statistical uncertainties of 2–10%, but various systematic uncertainties must be addressed before pursuing quantitative comparisons. The paths to reduction of the largest uncertainties are discussed. Once the uncertainty is reduced, future NIF experiments will probe higher temperatures (170–200 eV) to address the ongoing disagreement between theory and Z data.

Mayfield Farm Treatment System receives effluent collected from the Southern Catchment of Heathrow Airport, a total of 290ha. During winter operations, weather-related de-icing activity results in large shifts in the flow and concentrations of airport run-off. The biological treatment of spent de-icing fluids is challenging because it involves the treatment of a cold and nutrient-deficient wastewater of variable flow and strength. After a successful full scale trial to determine the efficacy of aerated wetlands, the entire treatment system was upgraded and optimized in 2010. It consisted of a primary reservoir, partial and complete mix zones, a balancing lagoon, and 12 aerated horizontal sub-surface flow (HSSF) treatment wetlands operating in parallel, with a total wetland area of 2.08ha. The original non-aerated HSSF wetland system, commissioned in 2001 had a design cBOD5 loading rate of 374kg/day at a flow rate of 40l/s (Revitt et al., 2001; Richter et al., 2003). The aerated HSSF wetlands now have a design cBOD5 loading rate of 2073kg/day at a maximum flow rate of 80l/s. Due to the weather conditions of the UK, the system is event-driven with highly variable flows and loads, with peak cBOD5 loadings of up to 12,188kg/day.
The entire treatment system is now designed to remove 3500kg/day cBOD5 at a design flow of 40l/s. It has a combined capacity of >44,000m3 of wastewater with a retention time of approximately 21 days, depending on the pump flow rate which varies between 40 and 80l/s. Nutrient dosing points have been positioned at strategic points throughout the whole system to prevent nutrient deficiency becoming a limiting factor in the development of a stable and viable mass of bacteria necessary to achieve the design criteria.
Flight simulators are becoming more sophisticated and realistic, and the requirements of those using them are becoming more demanding. Air traffic control simulation for such simulators is now ...approaching the real problem of air traffic control, where several aircraft need to be scheduled for safe approach and landing or for safe passage through the air space that an air traffic controller is responsible for. Also, the computational resources available to dedicate to air traffic control simulation are sparse, given that most simulations focus on a realistic graphical user interface and aircraft physics modeling. We provide a formulation of the air traffic control problem and a solver for this problem that makes use of temporal constraint networks and simple geometric reasoning. We provide results showing that this approach is practical for realistic simulated problems.
The challenging timeline for DARPA's Orbital Express mission demanded a flexible, responsive, and (above all) safe approach to mission planning. Mission planning for space is challenging because of ...the mixture of goals and constraints. Every space mission tries to squeeze all of the capacity possible out of the spacecraft. For Orbital Express, this means performing as many experiments as possible, while still keeping the spacecraft safe. Keeping the spacecraft safe can be very challenging because we need to maintain the correct thermal environment (or batteries might freeze), we need to avoid pointing cameras and sensitive sensors at the sun, we need to keep the spacecraft batteries charged, and we need to keep the two spacecraft from colliding … made more difficult as only one of the spacecraft had thrusters.
Because the mission was a technology demonstration, pertinent planning information was learned during actual mission execution. For example, we didn't know for certain how long it would take to transfer propellant from one spacecraft to the other, although this was a primary mission goal. The only way to find out was to perform the task and monitor how long it actually took. This information led to amendments to procedures, which led to changes in the mission plan. In general, we used the ASPEN planner scheduler to generate and validate the mission plans. ASPEN is a planning system that allows us to enter all of the spacecraft constraints, the resources, the communications windows, and our objectives. ASPEN then could automatically plan our day. We enhanced ASPEN to enable it to reason about uncertainty. We also developed a model generator that would read the text of a procedure and translate it into an ASPEN model. Note that a model is the input to ASPEN that describes constraints, resources, and activities. These technologies had a significant impact on the success of the Orbital Express mission. Finally, we formulated a technique for converting procedural information to declarative information by transforming procedures into models of hierarchical task networks (HTNs). The impact of this effort on the mission was a significant reduction in (1) the execution time of the mission, (2) the daily staff required to produce plans, and (3) planning errors. Not a single misconfigured command was sent during operations.
The most interesting places can often be the most dangerous ones, and space exploration is no exception. The dynamic surfaces of comets, the turbulent atmospheres of the gas giants, and the ...hypothesized subsurface ocean of Europa all call for exploration, and are all very risky for on-site robotic explorers. The Casper (continuous activity, scheduling, planning, execution, and replanning) software system provides critical reasoning capabilities to robotic explorers. To show how it works, we first describe Casper's internal workings and then look at the Three Corner Sat and the Autonomous Sciencecraft Constellation missions, highlighting Casper's contributions to each.

This paper describes the results of a study of nearly 1,400 intenders, those who express an intent to start a new business, comparing the experience of those who do start with those who do not and ...males with females in terms of the sources of information and financing used, the preparation of a business plan, the barriers to startup encountered and suggestions on how to cure these barriers. These respondents all took courses or otherwise used the services of the London Community Small Business Centre (LCSBC), a business incubator sponsored by the City of London, the Government of Ontario, the London Chamber of Commerce, the University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College.
