The human sense of smell and the ability to detect and distinguish odors allows for the extraction of valuable information from the environment, thereby driving human behavior. Not only can the sense of smell help to monitor the safety of inhaled air, but it can also help to evaluate the edibility of food. Therefore, in an effort to further our understanding of the human sense of smell, the aim of this meta-analysis was to provide the scientific community with activation probability maps of the functional anatomy of the olfactory system, in addition to separate activation maps for specific odor categories (pleasant, food, and aversive odors). The activation likelihood estimation (ALE) method was utilized to quantify all relevant and available data to perform a formal statistical analysis on the inter-study concordance of various odor categories. A total of 81 studies (108 contrasts, 1053 foci) fulfilled our inclusion criteria. Significant ALE peaks were observed in all odor categories in brain areas typically associated with the functional neuroanatomy of olfaction including the piriform cortex, amygdala, insula, and orbitofrontal cortex, amongst others. Additional contrast analyses indicate clear differences in neural activation patterns between odor categories.
The Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus, native to South East Asia, is listed as one of the worst invasive vector species worldwide. In Europe the species is currently restricted to Southern ...Europe, but due to the ongoing climate change, Ae. albopictus is expected to expand its potential range further northwards. In addition to modelling the habitat suitability for Ae. albopictus under current and future climatic conditions in Europe by means of the maximum entropy approach, we here focused on the drivers of the habitat suitability prediction. We explored the most limiting factors for Aedes albopictus in Europe under current and future climatic conditions, a method which has been neglected in species distribution modelling so far. Ae. albopictus is one of the best-studied mosquito species, which allowed us to evaluate the applied Maxent approach for most limiting factor mapping. We identified three key limiting factors for Ae. albopictus in Europe under current climatic conditions: winter temperature in Eastern Europe, summer temperature in Southern Europe. Model findings were in good accordance with commonly known establishment thresholds in Europe based on climate chamber experiments and derived from the geographical distribution of the species. Under future climatic conditions low winter temperature were modelled to remain the most limiting factor in Eastern Europe, whereas in Central Europe annual mean temperature and summer temperatures were modelled to be replaced by summer precipitation, respectively, as most limiting factors. Changes in the climatic conditions in terms of the identified key limiting factors will be of great relevance regarding the invasive potential of the Ae. albopictus. Thus, our results may help to understand the key drivers of the suggested range expansion under climate change and may help to improve monitoring programmes. The applied approach of investigating limiting factors has proven to yield valuable results and may also provide valuable insights into the drivers of the prediction of current and future distribution of other species. This might be particularly interesting for other vector species that are of increasing public health concerns.

The scope of this study was to investigate the influence of the chemical composition of energy crops on biogas and methane yield. In total, 41 different plants were analyzed in batch test and their chemical composition was determined. For acid detergent lignin (ADL) content below 10% of total solids, a significant negative correlation for biogas and methane yields (r≈−0.90) was observed. Based on a simple regression analysis, more than 80% of the sample variation can be explained through ADL. Based on a principal component analysis and multiple regression analysis, ADL and hemicellulose are suggested as suitable model variables for biogas yield potential predictions across plant species.
Background
Cutaneous involvement is very common in systemic lupus erythematosus. We describe the prevalence and spectrum of lupus-specific (cutaneous lupus erythematosus) and non-specific cutaneous ...features amongst mostly black South Africans with systemic lupus erythematosus.
Patients and methods
A retrospective record review of 298 South Africans (262 blacks and 36 non-blacks) with systemic lupus erythematosus was carried out. Cutaneous features were classified according to the Gilliam and Sontheimer classification of cutaneous lupus.
Results
Most (81.5%) patients were black African females. The mean (SD) age at diagnosis and follow-up duration were 35.0 (11.8) and 8.0 (5.9) years, respectively. Cutaneous lupus erythematosus was seen in 76.1% of patients, mainly chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus with the discoid lupus erythematosus subtype seen in 52.1% of patients. Acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus was seen in 30.2% of patients and was more common in non-blacks than blacks (odds ratio = 3.8 (1.9–7.9)); localized acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus was more common than generalized acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (odds ratio = 2.6 (1.6–4.4)). Non-specific cutaneous features occurred in 77.2%, with oral/nasal ulcers and Raynaud’s phenomenon each occurring in approximately 40% of patients. Diffuse melanonychia at initial diagnosis was present in 37.4% of patients and was more common in blacks than non-blacks (odds ratio = 3.1 (1.3–7.3)). Acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus was associated with renal disease (odds ratio = 2.8 (1.6–4.7)) and chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus with arthritis (odds ratio = 2.02 (1.24–3.29)). Diffuse melanonychia was associated with less renal disease and anti-dsDNA antibody positivity (odds ratio = 0.4 (0.3–0.7) and 0.4 (0.2–0.6), respectively) and significantly lower lupus severity index scores (mean (SD) = 5.99 (1.11) vs 6.56 (1.36) in patients with no melanonychia, p < 0.05)).
Conclusion
In this study of South Africans with systemic lupus erythematosus, the skin was the most commonly affected organ. In general, cutaneous lupus erythematosus was associated with less severe systemic disease. Acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus was less common in blacks, whereas discoid lupus erythematosus was more common than reported in Caucasians. Diffuse melanonychia was a distinctive finding and was associated with milder systemic disease.

This study examines cell surface ROR1 expression in human tumors and normal tissues. ROR1 is considered a promising target for cancer therapy due to putative tumor-specific expression, and multiple ...groups are developing antibodies and/or chimeric antigen receptor-modified T cells to target ROR1. On-target, off-tumor toxicity is a challenge for most nonmutated tumor antigens; however, prior studies suggest that ROR1 is absent on most normal tissues.
Our studies show that published antibodies lack sensitivity to detect endogenous levels of cell surface ROR1 by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. We developed a ROR1-specific monoclonal antibody (mAb) targeting the carboxy-terminus of ROR1 and evaluated its specificity and sensitivity in IHC.
The 6D4 mAb is a sensitive and specific reagent to detect cell surface ROR1 by IHC. The data show that ROR1 is homogenously expressed on a subset of ovarian cancer, triple-negative breast cancer, and lung adenocarcinomas. Contrary to previous findings, we found ROR1 is expressed on several normal tissues, including parathyroid; pancreatic islets; and regions of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. The 6D4 mAb recognizes rhesus ROR1, and ROR1 expression was similar in human and macaque tissues, suggesting that the macaque is a suitable model to evaluate safety of ROR1-targeted therapies.
ROR1 is a promising immunotherapeutic target in many epithelial tumors; however, high cell surface ROR1 expression in multiple normal tissues raises concerns for on-target off-tumor toxicities. Clinical translation of ROR1-targeted therapies warrants careful monitoring of toxicities to normal organs and may require strategies to ensure patient safety.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasingly prevalent and strongly associated with obesity, diabetes and the metabolic syndrome, not only in the Western societies, but also in most ...regions of the world in the 21st century. The spectrum of its histopathology ranges from steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), with risk for progressive fibrosis that may lead to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Benign and malignant liver tumors have also been more frequently reported with the increasing prevalence of obesity and diabetes. This review addresses the pathology of NAFLD and NASH, and their diagnostic features, diagnostic pitfalls, grading and staging, and clinical correlation.

Abstract Statement of problem The accuracy of digital impressions and the milling of implant crowns greatly influence the clinical outcome of implant restorations. Purpose The purpose of this ...in vitro study was to calculate the propagation of error in the process of milling an implant crown. Material and methods Thirty digitally milled casts made directly from a reference model were prepared. The casts were scanned with a laboratory scanner, and 30 standard tesselation language (STL) datasets from each group were imported to inspection software. In each analysis, STL datasets were aligned by a repeated best fit algorithm, and 18 specified contact locations of interest were measured in mean volumetric deviations. The master reference dataset was aligned 30 times to the master reference dataset to determine the software variation. The reference datasets were aligned to the master reference dataset to determine the scanner variation. The milled cast datasets were aligned to the master reference dataset to determine the milling variation. The 18 specified contact locations of interest were pooled by cusps, occlusal ridge/fossae, interproximal contacts, facial/lingual aspect, and implant position. The pooled areas were statistically analyzed by comparing each group with the reference model to investigate the mean volumetric deviations accounting for accuracy and standard deviations for precision. Results Software and scanner variation were negligible. Variations in the milled models resulting from software and scanner error exhibited statistical significance ( P <.001). Software, scanner, and milling error were shown to propagate through the digital workflow to the milled model. Conclusions The pooled locations may describe the reliability of the milling process as it applies to specific anatomic locations on the tooth.
Emotional exhaustion and innovation at work are two major topics of interest to organization researchers, employees and employers. However, working conditions that foster innovation may also heighten ...employees’ emotional exhaustion. By conducting a two-wave, longitudinal online study among the German working population (N=320), we analyzed the longitudinal impact of qualitative overload, unreasonable tasks, social support from a supervisor, and task variety on emotional exhaustion and innovation based on the categorization approach from the job demands-resources model research. Longitudinal structural equation modeling revealed that unreasonable tasks predicted emotional exhaustion (γ=0.111, p<0.01) and that task variety predicted individual innovation (γ=0.126, p<0.01) over time. Social support from a supervisor and qualitative overload, however, did not have any longitudinal influence on either emotional exhaustion or individual innovation. Rather unexpectedly, and in contrast to our hypotheses, no diverging effects from working conditions on emotional exhaustion or innovation could be found. The results demonstrate that the presence of unreasonable tasks impairs employees’ psychological well-being and that a high task variety at work leads to innovation. Implications for practice and future studies are discussed.
Yoga positively affects health-related quality of life and disease activity in ulcerative colitis. The underlying modes of action remain unclear. Within the present study we hypothesized that ...patients´ perceived stress mediates the effects of yoga on health-related quality of life and disease activity.
This is a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial comparing the effects of yoga to written self-care advice in patients with inactive ulcerative colitis and impaired quality of life. Perceived stress was assessed using the Perceived Stress Questionnaire, health-related quality of life using the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire and disease activity using the Clinical Activity Index. Outcomes were assessed at weeks 0, 12 and 24.
Seventy-seven patients participated. Thirty-nine patients attended the 12 supervised weekly yoga sessions (71.8% women; 45.0 ± 13.3 years) and 38 patients written self-care advice (78.9% women; 46.1 ± 10.4 years). Perceived stress correlated significantly with health-related quality of life and disease activity at week 24. Perceived stress at week 12 fully mediated the effects of yoga on health-related quality of life (B = 16.23; 95% Confidence interval 6.73; 28.40) and disease activity (B = −0.28; 95% Confidence interval −0.56; −0.06) at week 24.
Our findings confirm the importance of perceived stress in reducing disease activity and increasing health-related quality of life in patients with ulcerative colitis and impaired quality of life. Practitioners should keep psychosocial risk in mind as a risk factor for disease exacerbation, and consider yoga as an adjunct intervention for highly stressed patients with ulcerative colitis.

The increase in biofuel production by 2030, driven by the targets set at the 21st United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21), will promote an increase in ethanol production, and ...consequently more vinasse generation. Sugarcane vinasse, despite having a high polluting potential due to its high concentration of organic matter and nutrients, has the potential to produce value-added resources such as volatile fatty acids (VFA), biohydrogen (bioH2) and biomethane (bioCH4) from anaerobic digestion. The objective of this paper is to present a critical review on the vinasse treatment by anaerobic digestion focusing on the final products. Effects of operational parameters on production and recovery of these resources, such as pH, temperature, retention time and type of inoculum were addressed. Given the importance of treating sugarcane vinasse due to its complex composition and high volume generated in the ethanol production process, this is the first review that evaluates the production of VFAs, bioH2 and bioCH4 in the treatment of this organic residue. Also, the challenges of the simultaneous production of VFA, bioH2 and bioCH4 and resources recovery in the wastewater streams generated in flex-fuel plants, using sugarcane and corn as raw material in ethanol production, are presented. The installation of flex-fuel plants was briefly discussed, with the main impacts on the treatment process of these effluents either jointly or simultaneously, depending on the harvest season.
