to the very high precision of 0.35 parts per million and thus requires ...a storage ring magnet with great stability and homogeniety. A superferric storage ring with a radius of 7.11 m and a magnetic field of 1.45 T has been constructed in which the field quality is largely determined by the iron, and the excitation is provided by superconducting coils operating at a current of 5200 A. The storage ring has been constructed with maximum attention to azimuthal symmetry and to tight mechanical tolerances and with many features to allow obtaining a homogenous magnetic field. The fabrication of the storage ring, its cryogenics and quench protection systems, and its initial testing and operation are described.
A small, predominantly white, suburban New Jersey township has embraced the Los Angeles based Project D.A.R.E. (Drug Awareness Resistance Education) through implementation of this drug prevention ...program in all of its elementary school curriculums. This research effort builds on the rather shaky base of oftentimes conflicting and inconclusive outcome data concerning the efficacy of D.A.R.E. as a deterrent to drug use and abuse. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, outcome data were collected and evaluated from official police reports and school behavioral records. The paucity of recorded drug offenses for this sample of 100 ninth graders is likely to be more a function of nonapprehension rather than lack of actual drug use. Moreover, these results strongly indicate a need to further assess the effectiveness of D.A.R.E. through self-report data collection methods.

was depleted to a ≤ 25-cm depth, 20± cm less than reported for similar Michigan soils. Slopewash and runoff are inferred to have caused silt accumulations and greater infiltration at the base of ≥ 20° slopes, resulting in a thicker solum in foot-and toe-slope positions, whereas on slopes of ≤ 7° infiltration and interflow are the dominant processes, resulting in a thicker solum on the transportational midslope. The differences in soil profile development are attributed to sediment facies changes at 25- to 50-cm depth and resulting groundwater movement. Key words: soil development, soil spatial variability, kame slope catena, Wisconsin.
Ideally, companies should be able to record a value for options at the date of grant, with the understanding that at the date of exercise, there will be reconciliation. If the value recorded at grant ...is too low, the company will have to take the additional cost into account. If the value recorded at grant is too high, the company will receive a credit. In any case, however, the company must recognize something on the date of grant so that current and potential shareholders have some knowledge of the expense the company is incurring as opposed to pretending that expenses are not being incurred. The keys to developing an effective option expensing regime will be uniformity and mandatory treatment. The legitimate role of regulation/legislation relates to the mandate: every public corporation must account for options. The accounting should be both fair and appropriate, given the variety of option program designs and the consequently varying economic opportunities that could eventually arise.

The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 created numerous changes relating to capital gains. It will be relatively easy to justify holding assets for 12 months to qualify for the mid-term capital gains tax ...rate of 28%. As to the 18-month threshold, whether to hold another 6 months to get the further advantage of the 20% rate will require a thorough analysis. The $250,000 or $500,000 principal residence exemption does not do everyone as much good as was politically argued. Many clients, who have a good deal more than $500,000 of unrealized appreciation in their residential values, would prefer the old law. For almost all people, these new allowances are going to remove what might otherwise have been an impediment to the decision to sell, which could result in increased selling pressure on residential real estate.
The real key is the role that stock options play in any option holder's overall portfolio. There are numerous opportunities with respect to transferable non-qualified options. One strategy is to ...exercise options in order to increase the holding of the company stock because one believes it is the best investment opportunity available. Another strategy, which is more commonplace, and one that advisors typically encourage their clients to adopt, is to exercise options in order to diversify the concentration risks that those options might present. The 3rd strategy is to exercise in order to spend. Advisors must understand the strategic impact in order to add real value to their clients. It is all about understanding what the client wants to do with the potential option wealth.
Soils from two catenas on north- and south-facing slopes of a kame were analyzed to determine the effect of lithology, topography, and microclimate on profile development. In loess on the ...north-facing slope, where microclimate favored CaCO sub(3) dissolution and clay translocation, pedogenesis was rapid and an A-E-Bt-C profile developed. In contrast, an A-Bt-C profile developed on the south-facing slope. In gravel where limestrone/dolostone dissolution was slow, A-C profiles were found and CaCO sub(3) was depleted to a less than or equal to 25-cm depth, 20 plus or minus cm less than reported for similar Michigan soils. Slopewash and runoff are inferred to have caused silt accumulations and greater infiltration at the base of greater than or equal to 20 degrees slopes, resulting in a thicker solum in foot-and toe-slope positions, whereas on slopes of less than or equal to 7 degrees infiltration and interflow are the dominant processes, resulting in a thicker solum on the transportational midslope. The differences in soil profile development are attributed to sediment facies changes at 25- to 50-cm depth and resulting groundwater movement.
There is evidence of an association between self-esteem and deviant behavior, incarceration and treatment; but its nature is unclear. In this study, patterns of change in self-esteem as a function of ...correctional treatment were investigated. Using two tests (Coopersmiths Self-Esteem Inventory and Osgood's Semantic Differential), self-esteem was measured at entry to the program, midway, and before release for samples from the Glen Mills School and custodial and non-custodial comparison groups. (A short version of the Moos Social Climate Scale and a measure of treatment time were also collected for the two institutional groups.) Scores on the two instruments, both intended to measure self-esteem, were uncorrelated. The results indicate that institutionalization does not produce a significant drop in self-esteem and that juveniles in correctional treatment exhibit a low to high change pattern of self-esteem as measured by the Cooper-Smith Self-Esteem Inventory. Additionally, semantic differential results indicate that the "ideal self" of the institutionalized youth does not become more aligned with either his friends' or the staffs' view of himself. Although the data suggest correctional treatment may affect self-esteem, more detailed investigation of the nature of this change is needed.
