Transfer to a nursing home or a rehabilitation unit is considered hospital discharge unless the patient subsequently dies of complications from surgery, while hospital-to-hospital transfer during esophageal surgery is not considered a form of discharge. In 2018, the data collection method for general thoracic and esophageal surgeries had been modified from self-reports using questionnaire sheets following each institution belonging to the JATS to an automatic package downloaded from the NCD in Japan. Expression of EBV-LMP-1 antigen, bcl-2 product, and Ki-1 (CD 30) antigen was immunocytochemically investigated in imprints from 24 cases of Hodgkin's disease diagnosed on a histological basis. LMP-1 ...
was positive in nine of the 24 cases (37.5%)(3/6 in type LP, 3/9 in type MC and 3/9 in type NS), which is consistent with the results of previous studies by histochemical analysis. bcl-2 was positive in seven of the 17 cases (41.2%)(0/3 in type LP, 3/9 in type MC and 4/5 in type NS). bcl-2 was positive in only three out of nine LMP-1 positive cases, and they were not statistically correlated. Ki-1 (CD 30) was positive in 21 of the 24 cases (87.5%)(5/6 in type LP, 9/9 in type MC and 7/9 in type NS). LMP-1 and bcl-2 were positive in some typical Hodgkin cells and Reed-Sternberg cells, but Ki-1 was positive in the majority of them. Interestingly, atypical mononuclear cells with fine nuclear chromatin and pale cytoplasm were also positive in seven LMP-1 positive cases. These cells are larger than small lymphocytes, but smaller than typical Hodgkin cells and Reed-Sternberg cells. Furthermore, some of the atypical mononuclear cells were similarly positive, in seven bcl-2 positive cases, and these cells were mostly positive for Ki-1 (CD 30). Our results indicate that:(1) Immunocytochemical analysis of imprint specimens is as sensitive as immunohistochemical analysis, and it is useful for etiological analysis of Hodgkin's disease, and that (2) afraction of Hodgkin cells may derive from atypical mononuclear cells with fine nuclear chromatin and pale cytoplasm as a result of transformation by EBV, and a contribution of bc1-2 product was also suggested.

A case of Ki-1 lymphoma suspected on the basis of aspiration cytology of cervical lymph nodes is reported. The patient was a 43-year-old male with the chief complaint of a rapdily growing rt cervical ...
mass. Aspiration cytology revealed large tumor cells with multinucleated giant cells, which were similar to those in non-Hodgkin lymphoma, large cell type. The nuclei were mostly round-shaped, but some were convoluted or ring-shaped. Ki-1 lymphoma was suggested by the presence of characteristic ring-shaped nuclei. The giant cells looked like Reed-Sternberg cells, but differed in that the chromatin pattern was rougher with darker appearance of the nucleus and smaller nucleoli. The cytoplasm was basophilic and vacuolated, and some cells were even filled with large vacuoles, thought to be a characteristic cytoplasmic feature of Ki-1 lymphoma. Erythrophagia was also seen in some cells. Acid phosphatase showed stronger activity than in T cell lymphoma or Reed-Sternberg cells, but was weaker than that of histiocytes. Immunocytochemical staining was positive for Ki-1, EMA, HLA-DR, IL-2 R and was partially positive for LCA, MT-1, UCHL-1. No monoclonality was observed based on rearrangement of immunoglobulins and T cell genes. The above mentioned characteristic features of the tumor cell and confirmation by immunocytological staining were crucial in the diagnosis of this disease.
