Kompetenčni okvir EMT (2022) jezikovno zmožnost (v navezi s kulturno) opisuje kot temelj vseh drugih zmožnosti poklicnih prevajalcev. Njen razvoj je zato v ospredju bolonjskih dodiplomski ...prevajalskih programov, medtem ko za magistrske prevajalske programe Kompetenčni okvir EMT določa, da študenti za vpis potrebujejo visoko raven jezikovne zmožnosti v najmanj dveh delovnih jezikih oziroma raven učinkovitosti C1 ali več po Skupnem evropskem jezikovnem okviru (SEJO). Poučevanje maternega in tujega jezika prihodnjih prevajalcev (in tolmačev) bi moralo biti zato prilagojeno njihovim specializiranim potrebam, s čimer se v številnih pogledih uvršča v okvir jezikov stroke (Cerezo Herrero 2018, Koletnik 2019).
Na Oddelku za prevodoslovje Univerze v Mariboru zato že od leta 2012 ob začetku študija preverjamo jezikovno zmožnost študentov angleškega programa, od leta 2013 pa tudi obseg besedišča, in rezultate upoštevamo pri načrtovanju jezikovnega pouka. Medtem ko so bile v preteklosti že objavljene delne analize uspešnosti tako prilagojenega poučevanja (prim. Koletnik 2020 v povezavi z razvijanjem prevajalske zmožnosti, Koletnik in Tement 2020 za razvijanje besedišča), celostna analiza doslej še ni bila izvedena. Prav tako je deziderat primerjava oziroma korelacija izhodiščne zmožnosti s splošnim uspehom študentov pri jezikovnih predmetih na prevajalskem študiju, ki jo prinaša pričujoči članek. Dosedanje analize so sicer pokazale, da se za dodiplomski prevajalski študij angleškega jezika na Univerzi v Mariboru odločajo študenti z visoko razvito jezikovno zmožnostjo, kar predstavlja dodaten izziv pri snovanju učnih aktivnosti in materialov, obenem pa je dobra popotnica za magistrski študij prevajanja in tolmačenja.
Educating and raising awareness among lay members of the public about palliative care can significantly improve the care for terminally ill patients and their quality of life. This paper reports on ...the survey aimed at assessing the experience and expectations of participants in the Last Aid course launched in Slovenia in 2019 to train hospice volunteers and promote dialogue on death and dying. The course implementation was supported by materials prepared, translated, and/or adapted from German under the PO-LAST project, which linked Slovenian medical and healthcare professionals, hospice representatives, and university students. The Last Aid course follows an international four-module curriculum that has been successfully applied in 18 countries so far. In Slovenia, the course was delivered 30 times with 21 in-person deliveries and 9 online events attended by 450 participants of different sexes, ages, and professions. The surveyed population included 250 people who returned the evaluation questionnaires by October 2020. The aim of the analysis was to gain insight that can be applied broadly in future work and research on adult education on palliative care and the erasure of death-related taboos.
The teaching of foreign languages to students in Translation and Interpreting (TI) programmes should be framed within the field of Language for Specific Purposes (LSP). This would make it possible to ...pinpoint specific curricular content and methodological traits that contribute to the enhancement of the communicative competence and initial development of TI competences. This paper analyses the students’ perspectives on L2 teaching in a TI programme and how it should be undertaken to best comply with the linguistic demands imposed by translation and interpreting. A thematic analysis of 117 open questionnaires returned by students from Austria, Slovenia and Spain identified five areas to which the students attribute particular importance, and which should be considered when developing TI-oriented curricula.
In this article, we present a pedagogical framework for foreign language teaching in undergraduate translation and interpreting programmes. Within Translation Studies, many scholars support the idea ...that TILLT (Translation- and Interpreting-oriented Language Learning and Teaching) should be framed within the teaching of Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP), as students will use language as a professional tool in their professional lives. Based on insights from LSP research and practice, the area of Translation Studies dedicated to the development of language competence and expertise research, we have selected and described the key aspects for the development of professional language use in Translation and Interpreting pedagogy. We have then connected them in a framework to show how they interact and influence each other.
Drawing upon convergences between translation studies and foreign and second language (L2) didactics that have emerged as a result of recent research, this volume continues the dialogue between the ...two disciplines by allowing for epistemological two-way traffic, marrying established, yet so far unrelated or under-researched, conceptual approaches, and disseminating innovative scientific evidence from different continents. A unique feature of the volume is the sub-section presenting the most recent empirical studies in the development of linguistic and other professional competences for translators, with suggestions for re(de)fining translation curricula.The contributors to this volume include representatives of various spheres, including academics, researchers and practitioners. Their underlying theoretical and empirical research is informed by multiple perspectives: linguistics, didactics, and translation-related. This book shows how integrating insights from translation studies into language teaching and vice versa can effectively respond to the challenges of contemporary language and translator teaching and training.
This paper presents a study of the acquisition and use of English relativizers by non-native university students of the English language. Danish students of English Business Communication, Serbian ...students of general English studies and Slovene students of Translation Studies serve as informants for this work, which is quantitative and comparative in nature. The informants' mastery of English relativizers is investigated by questionnaire surveys. The study tests 3 hypotheses concerning challenges that the learners are likely to face due to possible interference from their mother tongues. The study does not only address the hypotheses themselves, but also possible ramifications for the theory of cross-linguistic influence. Two of the hypotheses are shown to be valid, showing that cross-linguistic influence is indeed real. The hypotheses in question concern the correct choice of relativizer with respect to animacy, and the misuse of whom in subject position. The results regarding the third hypothesis, i.e. concerning problems thought to be specific to Danish informants, are inconclusive, suggesting that cross-linguistic influence alone cannot explain all the challenges that non-native users of a language face.
