An accurate estimation of the axial compression capacity of the concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column is crucial for ensuring the safety of structures containing them and preventing related ...failures. In this article, two novel hybrid fuzzy systems (FS) were used to create a new framework for estimating the axial compression capacity of circular CCFST columns. In the hybrid models, differential evolution (DE) and firefly algorithm (FFA) techniques are employed in order to obtain the optimal membership functions of the base FS model. To train the models with the new hybrid techniques, i.e., FS-DE and FS-FFA, a substantial library of 410 experimental tests was compiled from openly available literature sources. The new model’s robustness and accuracy was assessed using a variety of statistical criteria both for model development and for model validation. The novel FS-FFA and FS-DE models were able to improve the prediction capacity of the base model by 9.68% and 6.58%, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed models exhibited considerably improved performance compared to existing design code methodologies. These models can be utilized for solving similar problems in structural engineering and concrete technology with an enhanced level of accuracy.
In order to solve connectivity problems in metropolitan areas, the development of underground metro lines constitutes an unquestionable requirement. However, the construction work thereof encounters ...unfavourable circumstances when surface excavations must be carried out that cross historical areas of the city, due to the need to control surface movements. The design of the metro in the city of Seville (Spain) from 2004 to 2006 provides a representative example of this situation and triggered major upheavals that exerted repercussions on historical buildings. For these reasons, the excavation stages of Line 1 of this metro have been simulated by numerical methods using FLAC3D software and validated with the results provided by the real conditions. Consequently, various surface settlements have been evaluated by taking not only variates of the main parameters that characterise the soil of Seville, but also of the various load situations and excavation conditions. Notable results have been achieved through calibration of 54 variants of the same model corresponding to Line 1, and their comparison with the real results obtained in nine critical areas of the itinerary. The results obtained have made it possible to determine the effects of excavation on the subsoil of the city of Seville with great accuracy, since the percentage error of calculated vertical surface movements varies from 0.1% to 5.3%.
The identification of parameters that affect mining is one of the requirements in executive work in this field. In this research, using hybrid intelligence techniques, a new guide to investigate the parameters that affect the occurrence and characteristics of flyrock is presented. Hybrid models were improved based on five types of optimization algorithms, namely particle swarm optimization, artificial bee colony, the imperialist competitive algorithm, firefly algorithm (FA), and genetic algorithm. The process of designing the structure of the models was controlled under the fuzzy Delphi method. This filter helps to determine the most important factors that play a key role in the flyrock phenomenon and its accurate prediction. The best optimization technique was selected based on applying two popular performance indices, i.e., the root-mean-square error and coefficient of determination (

As a result, the best combination obtained was the FA-artificial neural network (ANN), which was able to provide the best optimization of the weights and biases of the ANN among all the proposed models. In addition, this system showed the lowest network error in the prediction of flyrock compared to other ANN-based models. The new combination (FA-ANN) can be used as a powerful and practical technique to predict the flyrock distance prior to blasting operations.
Overbreak in tunnel construction creates additional costs, and it could put the safety conditions at potential risk. This paper is aimed to predict overbreak in order to control it before drilling ...and blasting operations through two intelligence systems, namely, an artificial neural network (ANN) and a hybrid genetic algorithm (GA)-ANN. To achieve this aim, a database comprising of 406 datasets were prepared in the Gardaneh Rokh tunnel, Iran. In these datasets, rock mass rating (RMR), spacing, burden, special drilling, number of delays, powder factor and advance length were considered as inputs while overbreak is set as output system. Many intelligence models were created to achieve higher levels of accuracy in accordance with several performance indices, i.e., root mean square error (RMSE), variance account for (VAF) and coefficient of determination (

). After selection of the best models, GA-ANN model results (VAF = 90.134 and 88.030,

Moreover, results of sensitivity analysis showed that overbreak is mainly influenced by the RMR parameter compared to other inputs.

In fact, ICA, PSO, GA and ABC were used to adjust weights and biases of ANN model. In order to achieve the aim of this study, a database composed of 699 datasets with 5 model inputs including slope gradient, slope height, friction angle of soil, soil cohesion and peak ground acceleration and one output (SF) was established. Several parametric investigations were conducted in order to determine the most effective factors of GA, ICA, ABC and PSO algorithms. The prediction of the risk of rockbursts in burst-prone grounds is turned into a challenging and vital mission for most underground projects that attract great interest from engineers and ...researchers. In this study, a hybrid technique, the artificial neural network (ANN) and artificial bee colony (ABC), neuro-bee model, was considered to create the sophisticated relationship between the risk of rockbursts in burst-prone grounds and its influencing factors. The establishment and validation of ANN models were implemented via a data set extracted from previous works, and the database covers 246 reliable rockburst cases. Six influencing factors were selected as input variables. Five-fold cross validation were adopted to tune hyper-parameters of ABC-ANN models, and the performance of ANN models was evaluated by correlation coefficient (

) and root mean square error (RMSE). Observational experiment results indicated that the ABC-ANN algorithm can be utilized as an effective tool for predicting the risk of rockbursts in burst-prone grounds. The

and RMSE values between the predicted and actual rockburst values were 0.9656 and 0.1281, respectively. Sensitivity analyses implemented by the response surface method revealed that the maximum tangential stress of the cavern wall and the elastic strain index parameters have a greater effects on rockburst compared with other input parameters. As a result, the proposed hybrid method outperforms the other models for rockburst prediction in terms of the prediction accuracy and the generalization capability.
Flyrock is an adverse effect produced by blasting in open-pit mines and tunnelling projects. In this study, an attempt has been made to evaluate/predict flyrock induced by blasting through applying three hybrid intelligent systems, namely imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA)–artificial neural network (ANN), genetic algorithm (GA)–ANN and particle swarm optimization (PSO)–ANN. In fact, ICA, PSO and GA were used to adjust weights and biases of ANN model. To achieve the aim of this study, a database composed of 262 datasets with six model inputs including burden to spacing ratio, blast-hole diameter, powder factor, stemming length, the maximum charge per delay, and blast-hole depth and one output (flyrock distance) was established. Several parametric investigations were conducted to determine the most effective factors of GA, ICA and PSO algorithms. Then, at the end of modelling process of each hybrid model, eight models were constructed and their results were checked considering two performance indices, i.e., root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (

). The obtained results showed that although all predictive models are able to approximate flyrock, PSO–ANN predictive model can perform better compared to others. Based on

, values of (0.943, 0.958 and 0.930) and (0.958, 0.959 and 0.932) were found for training and testing of ICA–ANN, PSO–ANN and GA–ANN predictive models, respectively. In addition, RMSE values of (0.052, 0.045 and 0.057) and (0.045, 0.044 and 0.058) were achieved for training and testing of ICA–ANN, PSO–ANN and GA–ANN predictive models, respectively. These results show higher efficiency of the PSO–ANN model in predicting flyrock distance resulting from blasting. Moreover, sensitivity analysis shows that hole diameter is more effective than others.
Performance prediction in mechanized tunnel projects utilizing a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is a prerequisite to accurate and reliable cost estimation and project scheduling. A wide variety of ...artificial intelligence methods have been utilized in the prediction of the penetration rate of TBMs. This study focuses on developing a model based on deep neural networks (DNNs), which is an advanced version of artificial neural networks (ANNs), for prediction of the TBM penetration rate based on the data obtained from the Pahang–Selangor raw water transfer tunnel in Malaysia. To evaluate and document the success and reliability of the new DNN model, an ANN model based on five different data categories from the established database was developed and compared with the DNN model. Based on the results obtained of the coefficient of determination and root mean square error (RMSE), a significant increase in the performance prediction of the penetration rate is achieved by developing a DNN predictive model. The DNN model demonstrated better performance for penetration rate estimation compared with the ANN model and it can be introduced as a newly developed model in the field of TBM performance assessment.
Flyrock is one of the most important environmental and hazardous issues in mine blasting, which can affect equipment and people, and may lead to fatal accidents. Therefore, prediction and ...minimization of this phenomenon are crucial objectives of many rock removal projects. This study is aimed to predict the flyrock distance with the use of machine learning techniques. The most effective parameters of flyrock were measured during blasting operations in six mines. In total, 262 data samples of blasting operations were accurately measured and used for approximation purposes. Then, flyrock was evaluated and estimated using three machine learning methods: principle component regression (PCR), support vector regression (SVR), and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). Many models of PCR, SVR, and MARS were constructed for the flyrock distance prediction. The modeling process of each method is elaborated separately in a way to be used by other researchers. The most important parameters affecting these models were assessed to obtain the best performance for the developed models. Eventually, a preferable model of each machine learning technique was used for comparison purposes. According to the used performance indices, coefficient of determination (

), and root mean square error, the SVR model showed a better performance capacity in predicting flyrock distance compared with the other proposed models. Thus, the SVR prediction model can be used to accurately predict flyrock distance, thereby properly determining the blast safety area. Additionally, the SVR model was optimized by new optimization algorithm namely gray wolf optimization (GWO) for minimizing the flyrock resulting from blasting operation. By developing optimization technique of GWO, the value of flyrock can be decreased 4% compared with the minimum flyrock distance.
An important task of geotechnical engineering is a suitable design of safety factor (SF) of retaining wall under both static and dynamic conditions. This paper presents the advantages of both ...prediction and optimization of retaining wall SF through artificial neural network (ANN) and artificial bee colony (ABC), respectively. These techniques were selected because of their capability in predicting and optimizing science and engineering problems. To gain purpose of this research, a comprehensive database consisted of 2880 datasets of wall height, wall width, wall mass, soil mass and internal angle of friction as input parameters and SF of retaining wall as output was prepared. In fact, SF is considered as a function of the mentioned parameters. At the first step of modeling, several ANN models were constructed and the best one among them was selected. The coefficient of determination (

) value of 0.998 for both training and testing datasets was obtained for the best ANN model which indicates an excellent accuracy level in predicting SF values. In the next step of modeling, the results of selected ANN model were used as an input for the optimization technique of ABC. In general, 11 models of ABC optimization with different strategies were built. As a result, by decreasing wall height value from 10 m to 8 m and 5.628 m and using almost constant values for the other input parameters, SF values were obtained as 2.142 and 5.628, respectively. Results of (8.003, 0.794, 0.667, 1800 and 2800) and (5.628, 0.763, 0.660, 1735 and 2679) were obtained for wall height, wall width, internal friction angle, soil mass and wall mass of the best models with 2.142 and 5.628 SF values, respectively.
