Gathering together over 60 new and revised discussions of textual issues, this volume represents notorious problems in well-known texts from the classical era by authors including Horace, Ennius, and ...Vergil.
A follow-up to Vegiliana: Critical Studies on the Texts of Publius Vergilius Maro (2017), the volume includes major contributions to the discussion of Horace’s Carmen IV 8 and IV 12, along with studies on Catullus Carmen 67 and Hadrian’s Animula vagula, as well as a new contribution on Livy’s text at IV 20 in connection with Cossus’s spolia opima, and on Vergil’s Aeneid 3. 147–152 and 11. 151–153. On Ennius, the author presents several new ideas on Ann. 42 Sk. and 220–22l, and in editing Horace, he suggests new principles for the critical apparatus and tries to find a balance by weighing both sides in several studies, comparing a conservative and a radical approach.
Critica will be an important resource for students and scholars of Latin language and literature.

Cicero’s quotation (at Rep. 1. 30) of Ennius scen. 82 TrRF (= XCV, lines 185-187 Joc.) needs some conjectural surgery to become more intelligible and hopefully a more memorable quote: I propose sint ...instead of sit; obseruationes instead of obseruationis; ante pedes quod est non spectant instead of quod est ante pedes nemo spectat.
Among the runic texts in Latin from Bryggen in Bergen, N 603 has many attractive qualities: the runic stick is inscribed on three sides ( a , b and c ), with each text of approximately equal length ...and syntactically and logically complete (although with minor lacunae at both ends). The texts reveal great intelligence and independence on the part of the cleric who composed them. Each of the texts contributes to the summary of a message from a lover to his beloved lady. Aslak Liestøl, who submitted the rune-stick to a thorough investigation and analysis, ably demonstrated that certain stanzas known from the Carmina Burana collection of love poems (no. 88 and no. 71) formed the basis of the texts. He did, however, leave some difficulties unresolved. There are, for example, a few Latin concepts which benefit from further semantic discussion. In addition, the slightly damaged stick still offers its interpreter some challenges. It is to be hoped that a closer reading of the poems in question will show that a fuller reconstruction of the wording of the rune-stick’s text is possible.

The author underlines to begin with the importance of Cicero's treatise Orator as a model for the dedication in Historia Norwegie (HN). In his commentary on §7 the present author advocates Fredrik ...Paasche's suggestion (1924) for identifying the dedicatee as the Franciscan Agnello da Pisa (Agnellus) who was sent on a mission to England in 1224, the apogee of which mission was the founding of a convent and school in Oxford in 1229. If this Agnellus was the dedicatee the date of HN is presumably the first half of the 1230s. Alternatively, the date could be as much as ten years earlier if Agnello and the author met each other during Agnello's time in Paris (between 1217 and 1224). The essential point is that Agnello da Pisa would have a motive for imposing a task like the one sketched out in §3. As to HN as a historical treatise, the most probable view is that there has been a sequel containing Norway's history after 1015 that has been lost.
Den smakfulle lille boken, med stive permer og silkebånd, kom på mitt bord med følgende kommentar fra CMs redaksjon: 'Denne nye oversettelsen er den man sikkert vil vise til i norsk forskning. Derfor ...er en omtale ønskelig.' Boken tiltrekker seg uten videre oppmerksomhet med gjengivelser av Håkon Gullvågs nå forsvunne 'reisealter' med Olavus Rex i midten. Ikke minst er å merke at Nidaros Domkirkes Restaureringsarbeider (NDR) står bak utgivelsen; Øystein Ekroll, arkitekturhistorikeren ved NDR, har skrevet innledningen. Boken ble passende lansert i kirken som del av Olavsfestuken på selve martyrens translasjonsdag 3. august. En primær målgruppe er utvilsomt pilegrimer, turister og besøkende. I vår sammenheng er målgruppen for disse linjer først og fremst medievalister (om jeg får tillate meg betegnelsen på norsk).
