The paper focusses on hrvatarji-seasonal migrants working in Croatian forests. The author compares information found in journalistic accounts in the Slovene press between the mid-19th to the early ...20th centuries with information from literary texts by Ivan Trdina, Anthon Hren Kompoljski, Lea Fatur, and Zofka Kveder. The analysis of journalistic texts shows that in the documentary style of these texts the hrvatarji are presented as hard-working people struggling for their existence. The literary texts offer a literary upgrade to this perspective with emotionally depicted characters and the environment in which they live.
The paper presents an interdisciplinary analysis of two travelogues by Josip Starè - professor, writer, and cultural worker, a Slovenian who spent most of his life in the Croatian region. The text in ...Croatian, Po koju iz Kranjske, describes the author's journey from Zagreb to Bled. The author examines Starè's relationship with his own identity and observes his sense of belonging to Slovene or Croatian entity. Starè uses numerous parallels to highlight the close ties between Slovene and Croatian people throughout history. Both travelogues convey his basic idea: the need for respect and cooperation between two different, yet in many ways very similar nations.

The gathered data stems from the archival material kept in the State Archives in Zadar and is associated with the activities and work of immigrants from areas of present-day Slovenia in the upper secondary school Croatian Gimnazija in Zadar, which operated from 1897 to 1921. Along with the teaching personnel, the structure of students who stated Slovene as their mother tongue and the data on their parents will also be observed. Based on the available data, we shall draw conclusions as to some of the reasons for the arrival of the population from present-day Slovenia to the area of Zadar and demonstrate its inclusion in the then Zadar society.
In the 19th century the modern nations were shaped and the language corpora of individual nations were built. In such an environment, the question of language and national identity appeared among the ...South Slav peoples, too. Macun was a Slovene reformer who espoused the Illyrian idea of Ljudevit Gaj about the integration of the Slovene and Croatian languages. In this paper we look at two travelogues by Macun that are particularly inspiring for the consideration of questions of the author's relationship to his own identity. The author reveals himself through comparisons with other identities and cultures that he observes and describes, expressing his image through views on people and space. Another approach to uncover the author's identity is derived from the application of the theory of reception when considering a work written for the Slovene and Croatian audience. The analysis of his two travelogues leads to the conclusion that Macun was aware of his Slovene identity and he did not equate himself with other South Slav peoples, while he emphasized the importance of their interconnection. Examining the data on Pavle Horvat published on the basis of scientific and profes-sional papers as well as newspaper articles shows two basic views of his work. The first in-volves the beginnings of ...his public and political activity, and concerns a young man who wished to actively participate in the then current political events in Slovenia but, for various reasons, most of all probably his approach, failed. The second view is much more intense and focuses on moments from Horvat’s life that do not show him in a positive light, but as a “bad guy” who created a false public image of himself. Based on the gathered data, it is difficult to complete both images and it is certainly necessary to conduct more research in order to answer all questions. The data gleaned from the daily press is partial, as is the data from the documents.
The second image, which can be seen from the gathered data, serves as the basis for forming the literary character of Pavle Horvat in the novel Fara sv. Ivana (The Parish of St John) by Miško Kranjec. In it, Horvat’s character is showed in a negative light, as a person who primarily fights for his personal interests under the guise of caring for Slovenians in Cro-atia. Such a literary formation may be based on documents and newspaper articles that were available to author Miško Kranjec, but could also be based on Kranjec’s subjective opinion, since it is obvious he knew Horvat personally and therefore immortalised him in his novel. Even though the character of Pavle Horvat is today almost unknown in Slovenian and Croa-tian historiography, it is precisely the literary formation of his character that prompts us to think about the less-known Slovenian-Croatian political relations in the interwar period and especially during World War II.
