Although several studies show that phonological awareness predicts reading performance, longitudinal results in different socioeconomic levels are not clear enough. This study aimed to examine to ...what extent the phonological awareness skills of Turkish-speaking children coming from different socioeconomic levels are predictive of later reading performance. Children’s phonological awareness was assessed in three time points including in the fall and spring semesters of kindergarten and in the beginning of first grade while reading performance was assessed at the end fall semester in first grade. A total of 451 children participated in all assessments. Three regression models were tested for the analyses. The results showed that phonological awareness skills assessed during kindergarten and in the beginning of first grade predicted reading performance in first grade in children from all socioeconomic levels, and predictive power of phonological awareness skills were higher in the spring of kindergarten compared to other assessment points.

Türkçe olan 531 çocuk katılmıştır. Çocukların sözcük bilgileri Türkçe İfade
Edici ve Alıcı Dil Testi, sesbilgisel farkındalık becerileri ise Erken
Okuryazarlık Testinin Sesbilgisel Farkındalık alt alanı ile
değerlendirilmiştir. Anne eğitim düzeyleri, ilkokul, ortaokul, lise, lisans ve
lisansüstü olmak üzere beş düzeyde sınıflandırılmıştır. Karma model varyans
analizi ile gerçekleştirilen analizler sonucunda anne eğitim düzeyleri farklı
olan çocukların sözcük bilgileri ve sesbilgisel farkındalık becerilerinin üç
dönem için benzer oranda değişim gösterdiği belirlenmiştir. Anneleri ilkokul,
ortaokul ve lise mezunu olan çocuklar sözcük bilgisi ve sesbilgisel farkındalık
becerilerinde anneleri lisans ve lisansüstü mezunu olan çocuklara göre daha düşük
performans göstermişlerdir. Sonuçlar bu becerilerde düşük performans göstererek
anasınıfına başlayan çocukların ilerleyen dönemlerde de düşük performans
göstermeye devam ettiklerini ve bu açıdan risk grubunda
değerlendirilebileceklerini göstermektedir.

belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Yöntem: Araştırmanın katılımcıları yaşları 3-23 arasında, OSB’li 292 (E=240, K=52)
bireyden oluşmaktadır. Araştırmada katılımcıların anne-babalarının TEDÖ-R-TV’yi doldurmaları istenmiştir. Bireylerin
OSB tanıları GOBDÖ-2-TV ile kontrol edilmiştir. Ölçeğin geçerliliğini belirlemek için kapsam, yapı, ölçüt, ayırt
edici ve yordama geçerliği analizleri yapılmış; güvenilirliğini belirlemek içinse iç tutarlılık Cronbach alfa katsayısı
hesaplanmıştır. Sonuçlar: Analizlerin sonucunda TEDÖ-R-TV’nin kapsam olarak geçerli olduğu, DFA sonuçlarına
göre ölçeğin altı faktörlü bir yapısının olduğu, model uyum indekslerinin iyi düzeyde olduğu (χ2/sd=2.00,
RMSEA=0.059, SRMR=0.067, NNFI=0.94, CFI=0.94) bulunmuştur. Ayırt edici geçerlilik analizleri sonucunda ise
zihin yetersizliği olan ve OSB’li çocuklar arasında TEDÖ-R-TV puanları açısından anlamlı farklılıklar olduğu ve
yordama geçerliği analizleri sonucunda TEDÖ-R-TV toplam puanlarının otizm bozukluk derecesini anlamlı olarak
yordadığı bulunmuştur. Güvenilirlik analizleri sonucunda TEDÖ-R-TV alt ölçek ve toplam puanının iç tutarlılık katsayılarının

This study investigated endogenous and exogenous predictors of early literacy in Turkish-speaking children. Whether children's language and working memory performances (as the endogenous factors) and ...home literacy environment (as the exogenous factor) in the beginning of kindergarten predict the children's current and year-end early literacy skills (phonological awareness, letter knowledge, receptive and expressive vocabulary) was examined. The participants consisted of 441 kindergarten children. Results showed that language development, working memory, and home reading environment predicted children's both current and year-end phonological awareness. Language and home writing activities were significant predictors of the year-end letter knowledge. Working memory was a significant predictor for both the current and year-end letter knowledge. Language, working memory and home reading environment significantly predicted the acquisition of receptive and expressive vocabulary. In conclusion, results suggest that each of the early literacy skills is related to both the developmental characteristics of children and their home literacy environment.
In this study, we aimed to determine the validity of the doubledeficit hypothesis, which argues that reading difficulties arise due to inadequacies in phonological awareness and rapid naming, in ...relation to reading difficulties in a transparent language such as Turkish. Accordingly, children attending a kindergarten were assigned to four groups: a double-deficit group (n = 23), phonological awareness deficit group (n = 35), rapid naming deficit group (n = 29) or control group (n = 48) according to the scores they received on measures of phonological awareness and rapid naming. The performance of the groups in reading and reading comprehension was followed longitudinally from the first grade to the end of the second grade and were compared at four time points. On the basis of multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), it was determined that the double-deficit group performed worst in reading and reading comprehension tasks, and the control group performed best. While the reading and reading comprehension achievements of all groups increased over time, the findings suggest that the performance of groups with phonological awareness and rapid naming deficits differed significantly from the double-deficit group and the control group. This study, which examined the effects of the double-deficit hypothesis for Turkishspeaking children, offers a new approach to identifying children at risk of reading difficulties in early years and to planning appropriate interventions.
The purpose of this study was to examine the power of phonological awareness and rapid naming longitudinally in predicting reading achievement in a highly transparent orthography, Turkish. Children ...were followed in kindergarten and first grade and assessed at four time points. While phonological awareness and rapid naming skills of children were assessed in the fall and spring semesters of kindergarten and in the fall semester of first grade, their reading skills were assessed at the end of fall semester of first grade. A total of 365 children participated in all assessments. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the prediction status of phonological awareness and rapid naming on reading achievement. Results revealed that although phonological awareness was a better predictor of reading than rapid naming, both skills predicted reading achievement significantly at all three time points, and that the contribution of these skills to reading differed at various points in time. In conclusion phonological awareness and rapid naming are strong predictors of reading achievement in a highly transparent orthography as indicated by the previous research. Thus, by assessing these skills, children at risk for reading difficulties can be identified and supported early to increase their chance of success in school.
Bu çalışmada okumada başarılı olan ve olmayan öğrencilerin okuduğunu anlama ve özetleme becerilerinin karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmada, öğrencilerin yazılı özetlerindeki ...biçimbirimbilgisi/sözdizimi Ortalama Sözce Uzunlukları (OSU) ve sözcük dağarcıkları da Farklı Sözcük Sayısı (FSÖZS) karşılaştırılmıştır. Ayrıca, okuduğunu anlama puanları, özetleme puanları, OSU ve FSÖZS arasındaki ilişkiler incelenmiştir. Bu amaçla, 122 başarılı ve 122 başarısız okuyucu olmak üzere, toplam 244 dördüncü sınıf öğrencisi araştırmaya katılmıştır. Bulgular, zayıf okuyucuların tüm soru türlerini yanıtlamada akranlarından daha başarısız olduklarını göstermiştir. Bununla birlikte, her iki gruptaki öğrencilerin de en çok ana düşünceyi bulma ile kişisel bilgi ve deneyimlerini kullanarak çıkarım yapma sorularında güçlük çektikleri belirlenmiştir. Zayıf okuyucuların özetlemenin tüm alt becerilerinde, ayrıca OSU ve FSÖZS ölçümlerinde akranlarından daha fazla güçlüğe sahip oldukları görülmüştür. Özetleme, biçimbirimbilgisi/sözdizimi (OSU) ve sözcük dağarcığı (FSÖZS) değişkenlerinin okuduğunu anlama üzerindeki etkisi incelendiğinde, biçimbirimbilgisi/sözdiziminin okuduğunu anlamayı en iyi yordayan değişken olduğu bulunmuştur.
In this study, we aimed to determine the early cognitive and home environmental predictors of reading in Turkish‐speaking children. A total of 362 children participated in the study. We monitored the ...children for 3 years and assessed the home environmental variables and cognitive skills in kindergarten, reading fluency at the end of the first grade, and reading comprehension at the end of the second grade. We found that home literacy environment and socioeconomic status predicted early literacy skills in kindergarten as they also predicted reading fluency and reading comprehension through early literacy in later years. In addition, we found that phonological awareness, letter knowledge, and rapid naming predicted reading fluency, while language and verbal working memory predicted reading comprehension. The results of the study showed us that it is important to consider reading and reading comprehension in Turkish‐speaking children holistically, together with cognitive skills and home environmental variables.

Objective: One of the diagnosis criteria for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is repetitive behaviors and the severity of the repetitive behaviors is an important variable in identifying the severity ...of the disorder as well. In the current study the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R-TV), which is used to assess the severity and types of repetitive behaviors in individuals with ASD, is adapted to Turkish and psychometric characteristics of the Turkish form are examined. Method: The participants consisted of 292 individuals with ASD, who were 3 to 23 years old (M=240, F=52). The parents of the participant individuals were asked to fill the RBS-R-TV. The ASD diagnosis of the participants were confirmed by Gilliam Autism Rating Scale-2-Turkish Form (TV-GARS-2). To measure validity of the scale; content, construct, criterion, and predictive validity analyses were conducted, and for reliability the scale's internal consistency was examined by calculating the Cronbach's alpha coefficients. Findings: The analyses showed that RBS-R-TV has good content validity, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) revealed that it has a six factor structure, and model fit indices showed a good fit (chi square/df=2.00, RMSEA=0.059, SRMR=0.067, NNFI=0.94, CFI=0.94). Discriminant validity indicated that children with ASD had significantly higher scores than the children with intellectual disabilities in RBS-R-TV and predictive validity analysis showed that total scores obtained from RBS-R-TV significantly predicted the severity of autistic disorder. As the reliability analysis, internal consistency coefficients were between 0.73 to 0.94 for sub scales and the total score. Discussion: Analyses showed that RBS-R-TV is a valid and reliable tool for the use of diagnosticians, researchers, and educators.
