•This study proposes a guideline to create a predictive persona by using data-mining predictive algorithms.•The proposed method aims to improve the accuracy and credibility of personas.•We discuss ...the strengths, weaknesses, and using scenarios of each types of persona creating methods.
A persona is a widely used tool in the design field to help understand users’ needs, experiences, behaviors, and goals. Quantitatively creating personas is gaining importance for its greater representability, objectivity, and fast creative speed. However, quantitative personas built using traditional statistical methods may not reflect the marketing goals of decision-makers, and they mainly focus on categorizing existing users rather than predicting target customers. To address the research gap, this study proposes a guideline to create a predictive persona by using data-mining algorithms resulting in personas that can be validated. The proposed method aims to improve the accuracy and credibility of personas to effectively predict new customers for target marketing. We demonstrate a step-by-step guideline for creating the proposed predictive persona using real user data, validating its credibility, and comparing its predictive power against traditional quantitative personas. We thoroughly discuss the strengths and weaknesses of qualitative personas, traditional quantitative personas, and predictive personas while portraying suitable scenarios in which each type of persona is appropriate.
Distant pet owners suffer from negative feelings such as distress or anxiety when separating from their pet dogs. Informed by prior work on facilitating intimacy between distant couples and among ...distant family members, we present the design and evaluation of the cAMpanion ambient display to enhance distant owner's sense of connectedness with their pet dogs. cAMpanion shows three statuses of pet dogs via different light colors in real-time enabled by sensor modules installed in pet dog's living environment. We examined the impact and effectiveness of cAMpanion via a 14-day field study using mixed methods research. Our qualitative data suggested that cAMpanion helped raise awareness, while quantitative results indicated statistically significant decrease in owners' negative emotions and increase in their perceived closeness. We discussed both advantages and limitations of cAMpanion from distant owners' perspective, and provided implications for future researchers who would like to design similar display to enhance human-animal connectedness.
EcoSanté is a mobile lifestyle intervention that encourages individual behavior change while also helping participants understand the deep connections between daily lifestyle choices and our ...collective impact on the planet. Informed by research on “small” intervention approaches, we sent participants daily behavioral challenges that demonstrated connections between personal health and environmental impact at large. Through a 20-day mobile intervention study, 139 participants uploaded 1,920 submissions documenting their attempts to engage in these challenges. We found that participants’ self-reported healthy eating behavior and general self-efficacy improved significantly immediately after the intervention. Moreover, 30 days after the intervention, participants’ self-reported eating, exercise, and general self-efficacy all significantly improved compared to the beginning of the study. Participants had a more negative reaction when being asked to come up with their own challenges. Based on quantitative and qualitative findings, we provide implications for future researcher on mobile behavior intervention research.

Music-to-visual style transfer is a challenging yet important cross-modal learning problem in the practice of creativity. Its major difference from the traditional image style transfer problem is ...that the style information is provided by music rather than images. Assuming that musical features can be properly mapped to visual contents through semantic links between the two domains, we solve the music-to-visual style transfer problem in two steps: music visualization and style transfer. The music visualization network utilizes an encoder-generator architecture with a conditional generative adversarial network to generate image-based music representations from music data. This network is integrated with an image style transfer method to accomplish the style transfer process. Experiments are conducted on WikiArt-IMSLP, a newly compiled dataset including Western music recordings and paintings listed by decades. By utilizing such a label to learn the semantic connection between paintings and music, we demonstrate that the proposed framework can generate diverse image style representations from a music piece, and these representations can unveil certain art forms of the same era. Subjective testing results also emphasize the role of the era label in improving the perceptual quality on the compatibility between music and visual content.

Emotional well-being issues have become prevalent nowadays. Nearly 74% of adults in the US said they have experienced at least one symptom of stress in the past month in 2018. To improve one's ...emotional well-being, relevant techniques of music therapy are used to help people ease pain and improve depressive symptoms. However, we know little about the role of technology in further exhibiting the therapeutic value of music. Having this in mind, we design AudioMomento as a self- healing tool, aiming to engage people in a series of music collecting activities plus journaling via a tangible recording audio book. These activities are informed by existing psychological evidences on music therapy. We hope this tool can be used to promote people's emotional well-being in everyday life.

Research has suggested that asking participants to generate their own arguments or ideas for the purpose of behavioral improvement (e.g., quit smoking) could lead to better intervention outcomes. ...Based on this concept, the opportunity for participants to personalize or generate own behavioral prompts intends to engage them in deeper self-reflection, with the ultimate goal of making the intervention more effective. Theory of active involvement has not yet been tested out in longer-term behavior change interventions. This paper seeks to bridge this gap by examining participant reactions toward personalizing and inventing new behavioral prompts in a mobile intervention for sustainable living. The data highlighted both the advantages and disadvantages of this intervention approach.
Pet owners form strong emotional bonding with their pet dogs, but sometimes they have to be separated from their pet dogs due to varying reasons resulting in negative feelings such as distress or ...anxiety. Researchers and designers in HCI have explored a variety of approaches to resolve this issue, including designing pet camera, pet chat system, as well as devices for playful remote interaction and haptic simulation. Informed by prior work on facilitating intimacy between distant couples and family members, we present the design and implementation of cAMpanion to promote distant owner's sense of connectedness to their pet dogs when separating from each other. cAMpanion displays three statuses of pet dogs via different light colors in real-time enabled by sensor modules installed in pet dog's living environment. We share lessons learned from a pilot study examining potential issues during sensor deployment as well as participants’ feedback toward cAMpanion.
Fear of missing out (FoMO) refers to one's perception that others live a better life as well as one's desire to keep constantly linked to what others are doing via social media. Our study aims to ...develop an emotion awareness intervention based on the Satir Model to help people become more aware of their emotions after using Instagram through a set of reflection questions and guiding prompts. We designed and built a web-based application called Being to deliver these content in a 10-day field study. Our findings suggested that participants generally found the reflection questions helped them better perceive how they use Instagram in terms of their use habits and mental states. The combination of reflection questions and guiding prompts helped improve participants’ emotion regulation skills and enabled them to develop strategies of using less Instagram. We conclude by discussing implications for future researchers interested in developing similar interventions.

Advancements in ubiquitous technologies and artificial intelligence have paved the way for the recent rise of digital personal assistants in everyday life. The Third International Workshop on ...Ubiquitous Personal Assistance (UPA'18) aims to build on the success of our both previous workshops (namely SmartGuidance), organized in conjunction with UbiComp'16/17, to continue discussing the latest research outcomes of digital personal assistants. We invite the submission of papers within this emerging, interdisciplinary research field of ubiquitous personal assistance that focuses on understanding, design, and development of such digital helpers. We also welcome contributions that investigate human behaviors, underlying recognition, and prediction models; conduct field studies; as well as propose novel HCI techniques to provide personal assistance. All workshop contributions will be published in the supplemental proceedings of the UbiComp'18 conference and included in the ACM Digital Library.
