The first historically documented pandemic caused by Yersinia pestis began as the Justinianic Plague in 541 within the Roman Empire and continued as the so-called First Pandemic until 750. Although ...paleogenomic studies have previously identified the causative agent as Y. pestis, little is known about the bacterium’s spread, diversity, and genetic history over the course of the pandemic. To elucidate the microevolution of the bacterium during this time period, we screened human remains from 21 sites in Austria, Britain, Germany, France, and Spain for Y. pestis DNA and reconstructed eight genomes. We present a methodological approach assessing single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in ancient bacterial genomes, facilitating qualitative analyses of low coverage genomes from a metagenomic background. Phylogenetic analysis on the eight reconstructed genomes reveals the existence of previously undocumented Y. pestis diversity during the sixth to eighth centuries, and provides evidence for the presence of multiple distinct Y. pestis strains in Europe. We offer genetic evidence for the presence of the Justinianic Plague in the British Isles, previously only hypothesized from ambiguous documentary accounts, as well as the parallel occurrence of multiple derived strains in central and southern France, Spain, and southern Germany. Four of the reported strains form a polytomy similar to others seen across the Y. pestis phylogeny, associated with the Second and Third Pandemics. We identified a deletion of a 45-kb genomic region in the most recent First Pandemic strains affecting two virulence factors, intriguingly overlapping with a deletion found in 17th- to 18th-century genomes of the Second Pandemic.
This contribution presents the results of the archaeometric characterization of Late Roman pottery from the city of Valencia (Spain). The ceramic samples, including common wares, amphorae, and ...cooking wares, have been characterized using WD-X-ray fluorescence for the chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction for the mineralogical study, and optical microscopy by thin-section analysis for the mineralogical and petrographic characterization. The results show a wide range of fabrics with cooking wares of imported origin. The most important result is, however, the identification of a possible regional ware that resembles African cooking wares but that could have been locally or regionally produced, as well as the possible production in the area of some common wares. These results provide a better insight into the production and distribution of Late Roman ceramics in the area and contribute to a better understanding of trade dynamics in the Western Mediterranean for imported wares.
En Valentia y su entorno se registró una intensa actividad constructiva en determinados lugares y momentos entre los siglos VI y VIII. La construcción del monumental centro episcopal en la primera ...mitad del s. VI, iniciativa del obispo Justiniano, cambió el paisaje urbano. En sus edificios (catedral, baptisterio, mausoleo y otros) se aprecia el uso continuado, pero selectivo y diferenciado, según cada uno de los conjuntos, de gran cantidad de elementos romanos. A partir de mediados del s. VI la actividad edilicia en Valentia decayó. Lo único a destacar es que se urbanizó la arena del Circo, un amplio espacio de 70 por 350 metros. Estos hallazgos se conocen peor, por ser excavaciones de poca extensión que no permiten identificar ningún edificio entre los muros aparecidos, pero sí que atestiguan un proyecto constructivo unitario, aunque de menor entidad que en la zona episcopal. Los materiales arqueológicos presentan una importante proporción de importaciones orientales y africanas. A finales del s. VI, a 16 km. de Valentia surgió un nuevo asentamiento fortificado de cierta extensión, 5 hectáreas, València la Vella. Su construcción, ex novo, supuso un gran esfuerzo edilicio. Además del gran recinto amurallado se han localizado dos edificios públicos en la parte baja y otro en la ciudadela. Debió ser el centro del poder de la provincia Carthaginensis. El yacimiento se abandonó a finales del s. VII o inicios del VIII. Al mismo tiempo, se creó otro centro monumental, el importante centro de poder de Pla de Nadal, a unos 2 km. de València la Vella. Su elemento más notorio fue el gran palacio de patio central, pero los diversos edificios que van apareciendo a su alrededor, indican que sería un complejo aún por delimitar.

These containers have a similar fabric and manufacturing process to other small Iberian vessels, such as the characteristic thin walls. Unlike the Roman amphorae produce in the Iberian Peninsula, ...there is no difference in thickness between these Iberian amphorae and other types of Iberian ceramics. Their larger size seems not to have resulted in a model with thicker walls. The archaeological findings demonstrate that pottery workshops exclusively for amphorae do not seem to exist in Spain, also confirmed by the archaeometric studies. On this basis we might question whether or not these large vessels can even be classed as amphorae.

L'histoire des villes et des cités de l'Occident romain ne doit plus être écrite comme celle d'un déclin progressif entre le Haut-Empire et l'Antiquité tardive. Néanmoins, l'image laissée par ces ...communautés civiques et la cellule administrative fondamentale de l'Empire se trouble progressivement entre les iie et ive siècles. La documentation tardive, peu abondante, souvent de nature juridique ou ecclésiastique et de portée générale, rend compte de la permanence globale de la vie municipale, mais la disparition progressive des donnés épigraphiques ne permet plus de cerner sa diversité et sa richesse. Or, les vestiges archéologiques livrent un tableau contrasté de l'évolution des espaces civiques. Si leur occupation semble se pérenniser sans changement significatif dans quelques grandes villes, ailleurs la dégradation de monuments et de lieux publics ou leur occupation par des activités privées, voire leur abandon pur et simple, signalent des processus de changement dans l'activité civique qui tranchent avec la perception actuelle de la pérennité de la vie des cités. Comment faut-il interpréter cette évolution ? Faut-il y voir le témoignage d'une crise urbaine ou seulement la transformation de la pratique civique et un changement dans l'utilisation des espaces dédiés à la vie de la communauté ? S'agit-il de phénomènes diffus ou localisés ? Afin de fournir des éléments de réponse à ces questions, ce livre fondé sur un bilan mais également sur des découvertes récentes croise les Histoires provinciales, les trajectoires singulières et les destins trasversaux des villes et de l'urbanisme civique en Occident entre le Haut-Empire et l'Antiquité tardive.
Presentem dues noves inscripcions romanes trobades a Valentia en les excavacions realitzades a la ciutat. La primera fou recuperada en un solar del carrer Roc Chabàs situat al costat nord del fòrum ...de la colònia, és de caràcter votiu i està dedicada a la deessa Bellona, que hi apareix esmentada indubtablement per primera vegada a la província Tarraconense. La segona fou trobada al solar de l’Almoina, situat al costat est del fòrum, i és de caràcter sepulcral.
