Increasingly, immigration policies are understood as structural determinants, rooted in racism, nativism, and ethnocentrism, which raise serious public health concerns for Latinx adolescents’ mental ...health. Our objective was to examine how immigration policy enforcement affects mental health of Latinx youth raised in a county with an aggressive interior immigration enforcement program. From 2009 to 2021, Gwinnett County, GA, led the nation in deportations under the 287(g) program as a “universal enforcement model,” where local law enforcement were deputized to detain undocumented immigrants, primarily through traffic violations. From June to July 2022, we followed a participatory action research approach with two groups of Latinx youth who grew up in Gwinnett County. In total, 10 youth took photos related to the research question, and engaged in facilitated dialogue using photovoice guide SHOWED/VENCER for four, 2-hour sessions that were audio-recorded and transcribed. Transcripts were analyzed following grounded theory principles to arrive at a conceptual model codeveloped and validated by youth. Youth described how 287(g) led to policing and deportation in their communities, fueling stereotypes, and discrimination that criminalized Latinx immigrants. Youth linked immigration enforcement policies like 287(g) to exclusionary systems that contributed to fear, marginalization, and loss in their communities, bringing experiences of sadness, grief, isolation, hopelessness, and low self-worth. From youth-driven research, we identified mental health implications of the 287(g) program among Latinx youth. The cascading harms of immigration enforcement policies highlight the need to address these policies and identify immediate strategies to promote Latinx youth mental health.
Ageing is associated with changes in body composition, such as low muscle mass (sarcopenia), decreased grip strength or physical function (dynapenia), and accumulation of fat mass. When the ...accumulation of fat mass synergistically accompanies low muscle mass or reduced grip strength, it results in sarcopenic obesity and dynapenic obesity, respectively. These types of obesity contribute to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in the elderly, which could increase the damage caused by COVID-19. In this review, we associated factors that could generate a higher risk of COVID-19 complications in dynapenic obesity and sarcopenic obesity. For example, skeletal muscle regulates the expression of inflammatory cytokines and supports metabolic stress in pulmonary disease; hence, the presence of dynapenic obesity or sarcopenic obesity could be related to a poor prognosis in COVID-19 patients.
Este trabajo aborda como objetivo principal la propuesta de un modelo, al que denominaremos “Transparencia de las Empresas que reciben Subvenciones” (TESUB), que posteriormente se aplicará para ...valorar cómo se está realizando la comunicación de la información en estas entidades privadas cuando el órgano concedente sea una administración pública. Se ha configurado una propuesta previa de indicadores, que se han contrastado con los indicadores del sistema español de acreditación de la transparencia, para configurar un modelo que también posibilite una certificación en transparencia. Se pueden agrupar en tres áreas de transparencia, la relacionada con información obligatoria a publicar en base al nuevo contexto de la ley de transparencia, la conectada con información publicada, en el contexto de los principios de transparencia y prevención de la corrupción para las empresas (Transparencia Internacional-España) y la ligada con información voluntaria publicada, que desarrolla principalmente las tres dimensiones de la responsabilidad social corporativa. La Metodología de Evaluación y Seguimiento de la Transparencia de la Actividad pública (MESTA) se ha tomado como un modelo de referencia para diseñar TESUB, como modelo propio para las entidades privadas, para dotarle de mayor potencia metodológica y contar con un instrumento de medición tanto cuantitativo como cualitativo, con valoraciones que atiendan a la calidad de la información suministrada y al soporte web. TESUB posibilita la valoración de la transparencia en sentido amplio, ya que calcula tres índices de evaluación que aportan mediciones específicas en cada bloque, que a su vez se pueden ir agregando, pero también los datos por componentes de la publicidad activa nos permitirán identificar áreas de mejora.
Introducción: La mala adherencia a largo plazo es reconocida como uno de los principales problemas clínicos en la gestión de las enfermedades crónicas, y en concreto de la enfermedad renal crónica ...avanzada.
Objetivo: Conocer la producción científica sobre el grado de adherencia al tratamiento farmacológico en pacientes en hemodiálisis.
Metodología: Se ha realizado una revisión sistemática no metaanalítica mediante una búsqueda en las bases de datos de Scielo, PubMed y Google Académico. Se incluyeron artículos escritos en inglés y español. Se analizaron los artículos que trataban la adherencia al tratamiento en pacientes en hemodiálisis.
Resultados: Se han revisado 19 artículos, 6 revisiones y 13 estudios observacionales, publicados entre el 2007 y 2015. Se estudiaron variables sociodemográficas: edad, género, nivel socioeconómico y estudios, estado civil, raza y situación laboral; variables clínicas y psicosociales y, factores relacionados con la medicación. Se encontró que entre 15-72% de los pacientes en hemodiálisis presentan falta de adherencia al tratamiento farmacológico. La depresión se encuentra asociada a la falta de adherencia. La edad se asocia a mayor adherencia.
Conclusiones: Los pacientes en hemodiálisis presentan con frecuencia falta de adherencia al tratamiento farmacológico, aunque con una gran variabilidad,debido a las diferencias en la definición y medición de la falta de adherencia. La depresión parece ser el predictor más influyente en la falta de adhesión. Los factores demográficos y clínicos no están consistentemente asociados con la falta de adherencia, a excepción de la edad, siendo los pacientes de mayor edad los que presentan mayor adherencia.
Skeletal deformities reduce fish viability, growth, wellbeing, and feed efficiency but also degrade the consumer's perception of aquaculture products. Herein, the skeletal development and the ...incidence of skeletal deformities in tench (
) reared in semi-extensive conditions has been described in detail for the first time. Larval skeletons were assessed through an acid-free double-staining procedure in 157 individuals, while 274 specimens at the juvenile stage were evaluated through X-ray analysis. The first skeletal structures to be formed were those related with breathing and feeding activities (e.g., Meckel's cartilage and opercula) and were visible in larvae of 4 mm of standard length (SL). The axial skeleton was fully ossified in larvae of 12-17 mm of SL, and the caudal fin complex in larvae with 17-26 mm of SL. At the larval stage, no upper-jaw or opercula deformities were observed, while a low incidence (1-9%) of other severe deformities in the heads of the fish (e.g., lower-jaw deformities) were reported. The incidence of vertebral deformities in tench reared in natural ponds was considerable in larvae (54%) and juveniles (52%). Vertebral deformities (fusion and compression) were the most common deformities found in tench larvae (approximately 30%) and vertebral shape deformity in juveniles (around 10%), being mainly located in the caudal region. Thus, a regular monitoring of the skeletal deformities in tench might help to identify better rearing protocols and improve product quality sold at markets. Characterizing the skeletal development not only in semi-extensive systems such as artificial and natural ponds but also under intensive rearing conditions, seems vital for a sustainable and profitable European tench aquaculture.

The aim of this work was to study, by remote sensing and numerical modeling, the thermal dispersion of a plume discharged into the sea by a nuclear power plant. The case study is the thermal ...discharge of the Laguna Verde nuclear power plant, located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. First, the thermal plume dispersion was characterized by applying remote sensing for different scenarios. Afterwards, Delft3D-FLOW numerical simulations were performed to expand the analysis of the thermal processes for a case in which the thermal plume tends towards the intake of the power plant. This thermal analysis was carried out by comparing the behavior of different dimensionless parameters. Moreover, the results of the numerical simulations were used to investigate the performance of the AEM and the k-L and k-ε turbulence models, available in the Delft3D-FLOW model. An LES turbulence model contribution was also analyzed. The results show that forced convection is predominant near the plume discharge area and at the vicinity of the intake structure. According to the metrics calculated, all turbulence models produced good agreement with the remote sensing data, except when the LES scheme was considered. Finally, the use of remote sensing and numerical simulations is helpful to better understand thermal plume dispersion.

Also, we review other factors related to the susceptibility and pathogenicity of SARS-CoV-2.
