We present a new generation of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) that are able to withstand high particle fluxes (up to 2 kHz cm−2). These chambers will be instrumented with a precise timing readout ...electronics and they are proposed to equip two of the four high eta stations of the CMS muon system.
Two-gap RPC detectors, with each gap made of two 1.4 mm High Pressure Laminate (HPL) electrodes and separated by a gas gap of the same thickness, are proposed. The new scheme reduces the amount of the avalanche charge produced by the passage of a charged particle through the detector. This improves the RPC rate capability by reducing the needed time to absorb this charge. To keep the RPC efficiency high a sensitive, low-noise and high time resolution Front-End Electronics Board (FEB) is needed to cope with the low charge signal. An ASIC called PETIROC that has all these characteristics is proposed to read out the new chambers.
A thin (0.6 mm) Printed Circuit Board (PCB), 165 cm long, equipped with pickup strips of average pitch of 0.75 cm is inserted between the two RPC gaps. The strips are read out from both ends and the arrival time difference of the two signals is used to determine the particle position along the strip (η position). The absolute time measurement will also be used to reduce the data ambiguity due to the expected high pileup at the High-Luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC).

A new generation of high granularity hadronic calorimeters was proposed recently to apply efficiently the so-called particle flow algorithms (PFA) techniques that aim to improve on jet energy ...resolution in the future International Linear Collider experiments. We present a new development on a gaseous hadronic calorimeter using glass resistive plate chambers as sensitive medium with a semi-digital readout. A small prototype was built and successfully tested at CERN. To build a large ILC-like prototype, an intensive development is ongoing. Preliminary results are very encouraging.

Abstract We present in this paper a new sensor called PICMIC-0 that is intended to exploit the intrinsic spatial resolution of the MicroChannel Plate (MCP) detectors. Manufactured using 6-metal ...TowerJazz 180 nm wafer technology, the sensor features hexagonal charge collection pixels on the top metal layer with a pitch of 5 μm and covering an area of 7.4 × 6.4 mm 2 . The 2 million of the pixels of this sensor are not read out individually. Each pixel is connected to a straight-line in either 0°, 120° or -120° orientation, in which a current is produced in case of a hit. Each of these readout strip-lines is connected to a readout cell which receives this current, amplifies it using a current mirror and converts it into a digital signal by means of a current comparator. The data is collected from the digital outputs of the readout cells using a priority encoder readout scheme and transmitted in frames of 400 ns. This projective readout system reduces the number of channels to be read out from 2 million pixels to 2556 readout cells integrated within the pixel matrix. Using three projections reduces the ambiguity in case of multiple hits.

In view of the High Luminosity upgrade of the CERN LHC, the forward CMS Muon spectrometer will be extended with two new stations of improved Resistive Plate Chambers (iRPC) covering the ...pseudorapidity range from 1.8 to 2.4. Compared to the present RPC system, the gap thickness is reduced to lower the avalanche charge, and an innovative 2D strip readout geometry is proposed. These improvements will allow iRPC detector to cope with higher background rates. A new Front-End-Board (FEB) is designed to readout iRPC signals with a threshold as low as 30fC and an integrated Time Digital Converter with a resolution of 30ps. In addition, the communication bandwidth is significantly increased by using optical fibers. The history, final design, certification, and calibration of this FEB are presented.
A high-granularity semi-digital Hadronic calorimeter using GRPC as sensitive medium is one of the two HCAL options considered by the ILD collaboration to be proposed for the detector of the future ...International Linear Collider project. A prototype of 1m3 has been conceived within the CALICE collaboration in order to validate this option. The prototype intends to be as close as possible to the one proposed in the ILD Letter Of Intent. Few units made of 1m2 GRPC fully equipped with semi-digital readout electronics and new gas distribution design were produced and successfully tested. In 2010 we intend to produce 40 similar units to be inserted in a self-supporting mechanical structure. The prototype will then be exposed to TestBeams at CERN for final validation.

The muon system of the CERN Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment includes more than a thousand Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC). They are gaseous detectors operated in the hostile environment of the ...CMS underground cavern on the Large Hadron Collider where pp luminosities of up to 2×1034cm−2s−1 are routinely achieved. The CMS RPC system performance is constantly monitored and the detector is regularly maintained to ensure stable operation. The main monitorable characteristics are dark current, efficiency for muon detection, noise rate etc. Herein we describe an automated tool for CMS RPC current monitoring which uses Machine Learning techniques. We further elaborate on the dedicated generalized linear model proposed already and add autoencoder models for self-consistent predictions as well as hybrid models to allow for RPC current predictions in a distant future.
Abstract
A top-down methodology is proposed to design
Phase-Locked-Loops (PLL) using behavioural and transistor-level
simulation in two cases: Ring-Oscillator (RO) and LC Tank Oscillator
(LCTO) with ...the aim to achieve a low-jitter PLL clock generator in
130 nm process. The optimization of these two PLLs is obtained in
three steps. The first one is to design a model in Verilog-A of each
block with its intrinsic jitter parameter. Each block is simulated
alone to verify the nature of its intrinsic jitter: Frequency
Modulation jitter (FM jitter) or Phase Modulation jitter (PM
jitter). The second step is to place each of these blocks in a
global schematic to obtain a full behavioural PLL. In this way, one
can study the PLL operation and check the effect of each block's
jitter on the PLL output. The third step is to use the intrinsic FM
jitter or PM jitter values to simulate at the transistor level of
each block individually and then all of them together. To evaluate
the loop bandwidth and the loop stability of each of the two PLLs, a
linearized PLL is designed using ideal sources. This approach is
important to check the compatibility of each block in terms of
jitter and bandwidth with respect to the target PLL performance. The
optimization results are used to design and produce two
PLLs. Measurements of these two are found to have an absolute time
jitter of the order of 2 ps rms.

For the High Luminosity (HL-LHC) upgrade an upgrade of the CMS detector is foreseen. One of the main projects is the development of the improved Resistive Plate Chamber (iRPC) detectors that will be ...installed in the forward region of CMS. To validate the performance of the new detector gaps with HL-LHC radiation levels, experimental tests have been conducted at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF++). One chamber equipped with electronics is studied and its parameters are monitored as a function of the accumulated charge.
