In South Alemannic Middle and Early New High German sources, the past participle of strong verbs inflected according to ablaut class IIIb show not only the expected vowel /o/ (e.g. geholfen ...'helped'), but also the vowel /u/ (gehulfen). So far, neither the scale and frequency of this phenomenon have been known nor have its origins been clarified. A comprehensive evaluation of the 16 volumes of the "Schweizerisches Idiotikon" on the one hand, covering evidence for the period of the 13th to the 20th century, and the recent literature on Swiss German on the other, shows that the participle ablaut vowel /u/ in verbs with stem final /1/ + consonant is very frequent, whereas it is virtually non-existent in verbs with stem final /r/ + consonant. The combined interpretation of historical written sources and recent dialect material now shows that participle forms with /u/ before /1/ + consonant represent an analogy with verbs containing stem final nasal + consonant clusters (class IIIa) which is to be found in the Swiss chancery language from the second half of the 13th century and in present-day dialects. Alemannic /u/ in the past participle of verbs belonging to ablaut class IIIb is thus clearly different from the East Middle German /u/ in the same position, which developed according to sound changes.
