The central kpc of the Milky Way might be expected to differ significantly from the rest of the Galaxy with regard to gasdynamics and the formation of young stellar objects (YSOs). We probe this ...possibility with mid-infrared observations obtained with Infrared Array Camera and Multiband Imaging Photometer on Spitzer and with Midcourse Space Experiment. We use color-color diagrams and spectral energy distribution (SED) fits to explore the nature of YSO candidates (including objects with 4.5 Delta *mm excesses possibly due to molecular emission). There is an asymmetry in the distribution of the candidate YSOs, which tend to be found at negative Galactic longitudes; this behavior contrasts with that of the molecular gas, approximately 2/3 of which is at positive longitudes. The small-scale height of these objects suggests that they are within the Galactic center region and are dynamically young. They lie between two layers of infrared dark clouds and may have originated from these clouds. We identify new sites for this recent star formation by comparing the mid-IR, radio, submillimeter, and methanol maser data. The methanol masers appear to be associated with young, embedded YSOs characterized by 4.5 Delta *mm excesses. We use the SEDs of these sources to estimate their physical characteristics; their masses appear to range from ~10 to ~20 M. Within the central 400 X 50 pc (|l| < 13 and |b| < 10') the star formation rate (SFR) based on the identification of Stage I evolutionary phase of YSO candidates is about 0.14 M yr-1. Given that the majority of the sources in the population of YSOs are classified as Stage I objects, we suggest that a recent burst of star formation took place within the last 105 yr. This suggestion is also consistent with estimates of SFRs within the last ~107 yr showing a peak around 105 yr ago. Lastly, we find that the Schmidt-Kennicutt Law applies well in the central 400 pc of the Galaxy. This implies that star formation does not appear to be dramatically affected by the extreme physical conditions in the Galactic center region.
Lung transplantation is a life-saving treatment for patients with end-stage lung disease; however, it is infrequently considered for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) ...attributable to infectious causes. We aimed to describe the course of disease and early post-transplantation outcomes in critically ill patients with COVID-19 who failed to show lung recovery despite optimal medical management and were deemed to be at imminent risk of dying due to pulmonary complications.
We established a multi-institutional case series that included the first consecutive transplants for severe COVID-19-associated ARDS known to us in the USA, Italy, Austria, and India. De-identified data from participating centres-including information relating to patient demographics and pre-COVID-19 characteristics, pretransplantation disease course, perioperative challenges, pathology of explanted lungs, and post-transplantation outcomes-were collected by Northwestern University (Chicago, IL, USA) and analysed.
Between May 1 and Sept 30, 2020, 12 patients with COVID-19-associated ARDS underwent bilateral lung transplantation at six high-volume transplant centres in the USA (eight recipients at three centres), Italy (two recipients at one centre), Austria (one recipient), and India (one recipient). The median age of recipients was 48 years (IQR 41-51); three of the 12 patients were female. Chest imaging before transplantation showed severe lung damage that did not improve despite prolonged mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The lung transplant procedure was technically challenging, with severe pleural adhesions, hilar lymphadenopathy, and increased intraoperative transfusion requirements. Pathology of the explanted lungs showed extensive, ongoing acute lung injury with features of lung fibrosis. There was no recurrence of SARS-CoV-2 in the allografts. All patients with COVID-19 could be weaned off extracorporeal support and showed short-term survival similar to that of transplant recipients without COVID-19.
The findings from our report show that lung transplantation is the only option for survival in some patients with severe, unresolving COVID-19-associated ARDS, and that the procedure can be done successfully, with good early post-transplantation outcomes, in carefully selected patients.

Abstract
The Large Hadron–Electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting ...energy-recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron–proton and proton–proton operations. This report represents an update to the LHeC’s conceptual design report (CDR), published in 2012. It comprises new results on the parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, and electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics by extending the accessible kinematic range of lepton–nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to its enhanced luminosity and large energy and the cleanliness of the final hadronic states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, this report contains a detailed updated design for the energy-recovery electron linac (ERL), including a new lattice, magnet and superconducting radio-frequency technology, and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described, and the lower-energy, high-current, three-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented, which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution, and calibration goals that arise from the Higgs and parton-density-function physics programmes. This paper also presents novel results for the Future Circular Collider in electron–hadron (FCC-eh) mode, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies.
Despite recognizing the importance of wetlands in the Coastal Plain of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed (CBW) in terms of ecosystem services, our understanding of wetland functions has mostly been ...limited to individual wetlands and overall catchment-scale wetland functions have rarely been investigated. This study is aimed at assessing the cumulative impacts of wetlands on watershed hydrology for an agricultural watershed within the Coastal Plain of the CBW using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). We employed two improved wetland modules for enhanced representation of physical processes and spatial distribution of riparian wetlands (RWs) and geographically isolated wetlands (GIWs). This study focused on GIWs as their hydrological impacts on watershed hydrology are poorly understood and GIWs are poorly protected. Multiple wetland scenarios were prepared by removing all or portions of the baseline GIW condition indicated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Wetlands Inventory geospatial dataset. We further compared the impacts of GIWs and RWs on downstream flow (i.e., streamflow at the watershed outlet). Our simulation results showed that GIWs strongly influenced downstream flow by altering water transport mechanisms in upstream areas. Loss of all GIWs reduced both water routed to GIWs and water infiltrated into the soil through the bottom of GIWs, leading to an increase in surface runoff of 9% and a decrease in groundwater flow of 7% in upstream areas. These changes resulted in increased variability of downstream flow in response to extreme flow conditions. GIW loss also induced an increase in month to month variability of downstream flow and a decrease in the baseflow contribution to streamflow. Loss of all GIWs was shown to cause a greater fluctuation of downstream flow than loss of all RWs for this study site, due to a greater total water storage capacity of GIWs. Our findings indicate that GIWs play a significant role in controlling hydrological processes in upstream areas and downstream flow and, therefore, protecting GIWs is important for enhanced hydrological resilience to extreme flow conditions in this region.

We report a rapid solution-phase strategy to synthesize alloyed PtNi nanoparticles which demonstrate outstanding functionality for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This one-pot coreduction ...colloidal synthesis results in a monodisperse population of single-crystal nanoparticles of rhombic dodecahedral morphology with Pt-enriched edges and compositions close to Pt1Ni2. We use nanoscale 3D compositional analysis to reveal for the first time that oleylamine (OAm)-aging of the rhombic dodecahedral Pt1Ni2 particles results in Ni leaching from surface facets, producing aged particles with concave faceting, an exceptionally high surface area, and a composition of Pt2Ni1. We show that the modified atomic nanostructures catalytically outperform the original PtNi rhombic dodecahedral particles by more than two-fold and also yield improved cycling durability. Their functionality for the ORR far exceeds commercially available Pt/C nanoparticle electrocatalysts, both in terms of mass-specific activities (up to a 25-fold increase) and intrinsic area-specific activities (up to a 27-fold increase).
Symptomatic intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration accounts for significant socioeconomic burden. Recently, the expression of the tissue renin-angiotensin system (tRAS) in rat and bovine IVD was ...demonstrated. The major effector of tRAS is angiotensin II (AngII), which participates in proinflammatory pathways. The present study investigated the expression of tRAS in human IVDs, and the correlation between tRAS, inflammation and IVD degeneration. Human IVD tissue was collected during spine surgery and distributed according to principal diagnosis. Gene expression of tRAS components, proinflammatory and catabolic markers in the IVD tissue was assessed. Hydroxyproline (OHP) and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content in the IVD tissue were determined. Tissue distribution of tRAS components was investigated by immunohistochemistry. Gene expression of tRAS components such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), Ang II receptor type 2 (AGTR2), angiotensinogen (AGT) and cathepsin D (CTSD) was confirmed in human IVDs. IVD samples that expressed tRAS components (n = 21) revealed significantly higher expression levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α), a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs (ADAMTS) 4 and 5 compared to tRAS-negative samples (n = 37). Within tRAS-positive samples, AGT, matrix-metalloproteinases 13 and 3, IL-1, IL-6 and IL-8 were more highly expressed in traumatic compared to degenerated IVDs. Total GAG/DNA content of non-tRAS expressing IVD tissue was significantly higher compared to tRAS positive tissue. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the presence of AngII in the human IVD. The present study identified the existence of tRAS in the human IVD and suggested a correlation between tRAS expression, inflammation and ultimately IVD degeneration.

We used scanning transmission electron microscopy to characterise the range of morphologies produced, which included spherical and concave cuboidal core-shell structures. Electrocatalytic activity was evaluated using a rotating disc electrode (1600 rpm) in 0.1 M HClO
4
; the electrocatalytic performance of these Ni@Pt NPs showed significant (∼11-fold) improvement compared to a commercial Pt/C catalyst. Extended cycling revealed that electrochemical surface area was retained by cuboidal PtNi NPs post 5000 electrochemical cycles (0.05-1.00 V,
vs.
SHE). This is attributed to the enclosure of Ni atoms by a thick Pt shell, thus limiting Ni dissolution from the alloy structures. The novel synthetic strategy presented here results in a high yield of Ni@Pt NPs which show excellent electro-catalytic activity and useful durability.

The present study is concerned with the theoretical analysis of the effects of nonlinear viscous damping on vibration isolation of single degree of freedom (sdof) systems. The concept of the output ...frequency response function (OFRF) recently proposed by the authors is applied to study how the transmissibility of a sdof vibration isolator depends on the parameter of a cubic viscous damping characteristic. The theoretical analysis reveals that the cubic nonlinear viscous damping can produce an ideal vibration isolation such that only the resonant region is modified by the damping and the non-resonant regions remain unaffected, regardless of the levels of damping applied to the system. Simulation study results demonstrate the validity and engineering significance of the analysis. This research work has significant implications for the analysis and design of viscously damped vibration isolators for a wide range of practical applications.
Summary
Background Benefits and risks of concomitant immunomodulators and maintenance infliximab in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients have not been adequately evaluated.
Aim To assess the ...effect of concomitant immunomodulator and infliximab maintenance therapy using data from four prospective, randomized Phase 3 trials in IBD patients.
Methods Overall, 1383 patients from ACCENT I and ACCENT II luminal and fistulizing Crohn’s disease trials and ACT 1 and ACT 2 ulcerative colitis trials were analysed. Patients were treated with placebo or infliximab 5 or 10 mg/kg at weeks 0, 2 and 6 followed by every‐8‐week maintenance therapy. Clinical response, clinical remission, fistula response, complete fistula response, infection and infusion reaction rates; serum infliximab concentrations and immunogenicity were summarized by baseline concomitant immunomodulator subgroup (use or non‐use).
Results Overall, almost 40% of evaluated IBD patients received concomitant immunomodulators. Efficacy, infection, and serious infection rates were generally similar in patients who received maintenance therapy with or without concomitant immunomodulators. There were no consistent differences in serum infliximab concentrations with or without immunomodulators in patients who received scheduled maintenance therapy. Concomitant immunomodulators reduced infusion reactions and immunogenicity.
Conclusion Concomitant immunomodulators did not improve efficacy or pharmacokinetics in IBD patients who received maintenance infliximab.
Handgrip dynamometers are widely used to measure handgrip strength (HGS). HGS is a safe and easy to obtain measure of strength capacity, and a reliable assessment of muscle function. Although HGS ...provides robust prognostic value and utility, several protocol variants exist for HGS in clinical settings and translational research. This lack of methodological consistency could threaten the precision of HGS measurements and limit comparisons between the growing number of studies measuring HGS. Providing awareness of the protocol variants for HGS and making suggestions to reduce the implications of these variants will help to improve methodological consistency. Moreover, leveraging recent advancements in HGS equipment may enable us to use more sophisticated HGS dynamometer technologies to better assess muscle function. This Special Article will 1) highlight differences in HGS protocols and instrumentation, 2) provide recommendations to better specify HGS procedures and equipment, and 3) present future research directions for studies that measure HGS. We also provided a minimum reporting criteria framework to help future research studies avoid underreporting of HGS procedures.
