The aging characteristics of some aromatic hydrocarbons and some other solvents with a ring like molecule structure are systematically studied. The concentrations ranging from a few ppm to several ...hundred ppm were investigated. Gas mixtures with and without hydrocarbons were tested as well, to find out whether the hydrocarbons contribute to the plasma polymerisation process. An array of twelve single-wire proportional counters, all receiving roughly the same irradiation dose from an X-ray device, was used for the accelerated aging tests. The aging rates were measured as a function of the concentration of the compounds under study. The results indicated that rate of aging is proportional to the concentration of aromatic hydrocarbons studied, and that the organic quenching component is taking part to the process by enhancing the aging rate. Outgassing of some construction materials was investigated as well. A thermal desorption tube was used for sampling the organic compounds released from the materials and a GC/MS analyser was used for the analysis. The method was utilised also for analysing the compounds created in the proportional counter due to the addition of the aromatic hydrocarbons.

A double GEM detector for X-ray astronomy is under construction. In addition to the GEM foils and the readout board, the gas volume of the detector will also enclose the front-end electronics and the ...cabling. As a sealed detector in years long operation, a special attention must be paid on the aging characteristics of the detector. We have studied the outgassing properties of various detector construction materials. Our ultimate goal is to identify most of the chemical compounds released in the gas and estimate their impact on the aging properties of the detector.
To qualify for a good X-ray imaging detector of the next generation in space astronomy some basic features are needed. These include large active area, good spectral and spatial resolution, high ...count rate capability and robust structure. These requirements can be achieved with the gaseous electron multiplier (GEM). We have studied the applicability of the GEM detectors to X-ray astronomy in an operational environment of a satellite.
The physics programme of the TOTEMexperiment requires the detection of very forward protons scattered by only a few microradians out of the LHC beams. For this purpose, stacks of planar Silicon ...detectors have been mounted in moveable near-beam telescopes (Roman Pots) located along the beamline on both sides of the interaction point. In order to maximise the proton acceptance close to the beams, the dead space at the detector edge had to be minimised. During the detector prototyping phase, different sensor technologies and designs have been explored. A reduction of the dead space to less than 50 mu m has been accomplished with two novel silicon detector technologies: one with the Current Terminating Structure (CTS) design and one based on the 3D edge manufacturing. This paper describes performance studies on prototypes of these detectors, carried out in 2004 in a fixed-target muon beam at CERN's SPS accelerator. In particular, the efficiency and accuracy in the vicinity of the beam-facing edges are discussed.
Silicon detectors for the Roman Pots of the the large hadron collider TOTEM experiment aim for full sensitivity at the edge where a terminating structure is required for electrical stability. This ...work provides an innovative approach reducing the conventional width of the terminating structure to less than 100 /spl mu/m, still using standard planar fabrication technology. The objective of this new development is to decouple the electric behavior of the surface from the sensitive volume within a few tens of micrometers. The explanation of the basic principle of this new approach together with the experimental confirmation via electric measurements and beam test are presented in this paper, demonstrating that silicon detectors with this new terminating structure are fully operational and efficient to under 60 /spl mu/m from the die cut.
The F AIR 1 facility is an international accelerator centre for research with ion and antiproton beams. It is being built at Darmstadt, Germany as an extension to the current GSI research institute. ...One major part of the facility will be the Super-FRS 2 separator, which will be include in phase one of the project construction. The NUSTAR experiments will benefit from the Super-FRS, which will deliver an unprecedented range of radioactive ion beams (RIB). These experiments will use beams of different energies and characteristics in three different branches; the high-energy which utilizes the RIB at relativistic energies 300-1500 MeV /u as created in the production process, the lowenergy branch aims to use beams in the range of 0-150 MeV/u whereas the ring branch will cool and store beams in the NESR ring. The main tasks for the Super-FRS beam diagnostics chambers will be for the set up and adjustment of the separator as well as to provide tracking and event-by-event particle identification. The Helsinki Institute of Physics, the Comenius University, and the Detector Laboratory and Experimental Electronics at GSI are in a joint R&D phase of a GEM-TPC detector which could satisfy the requirements of such diagnostics and tracking chambers in terms of tracking efficiency, space resolution, count rate capability and momenta resolution. The current status of the first prototype and the preliminary results from the test beam campaign S417 using the n-Xyter chips mounted on GEMEX cards will be shown.

The TOTEM experiment will detect leading protons scattered in angles of microradians from the interaction point at the large hadron collider. This will be achieved using detectors with a minimized ...dead area at the edge. The collaboration has developed an innovative structure at the detector edge reducing the conventional dead width to less than 100
μm, still using standard planar fabrication technology. In this new development, the current of the surface is decoupled from the sensitive volume current within a few tens of micrometers. The basic working principle is explained in this paper. Final size detectors have been produced using this approach. The current–voltage and current–temperature characteristics of the detectors were studied and the detectors were successfully tested in a coasting beam experiment.

We have constructed a 60 cm long DC-coupled p-side silicon microstrip detector with 50 μm pitch and beam tested it at CERN by using 50 GeV electrons. In this paper we describe the production and ...assembly of the ladder and present the beam test results. We obtain a signal-to-noise ratio of 10 and spatial resolution better than 13 μm over the full length of the ladder.
