The quality of online health information is cause for concern in general, and the spread of mis/disinformation on the benefits and risks of vaccines has certainly been fueling vaccine hesitancy. In ...the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have entered an era of unprecedented "infodemic." There has never been a more urgent time to address the long-standing question of how to overcome the deleterious influence of exposure to online mis/disinformation on vaccine uptake. eHealth literacy, a skill set including media literacy, is key to navigating the web in search for health information and processing the one encountered through social media. Studies assessing the impact of increasing eHealth literacy on behavioral attitudes and health outcomes in the general population are relatively scarce to date. Yet for many reasons, leveraging eHealth literacy skills, and more specifically, media literacy, could be of great value to help mitigate the detrimental effects of erroneous information on vaccination decision-making. In this paper, we make the case that eHealth and media literacies should be viewed as fundamental skills that have the potential to empower citizens to better recognize online mis/disinformation and make informed decisions about vaccination as any other health matters.

We conducted a systematic review of literature to ...assess immunogenicity, efficacy and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in immunocompromised populations.
We searched Medline and Embase databases.
We included studies of COVID-19 vaccines after complete vaccination in immunocompromised patients until 31 August 2021. Studies with <10 patients, safety data only and case series of breakthrough infections were excluded.
Risk of bias was assessed via the tool developed by the National Institutes of Health on interventional and observational studies. Immunogenicity was assessed through non-response rate defined as no anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike protein antibodies, efficacy and effectiveness by the relative reduction in risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-19. We collected factors associated with the risk of non-response. We presented collected data by immunosuppression type.
We screened 5917 results, included 162 studies. There were 157 on immunogenicity in 25 209 participants, including 7835 cancer or haematological malignancy patients (31.1%), 6302 patients on dialysis (25.0%), 5974 solid organ transplant recipients (23.7%) and 4680 immune-mediated disease patients (18.6%). Proportion of non-responders seemed higher among solid organ transplant recipients (range 18–100%) and patients with haematological malignancy (range 14–61%), and lower in patients with cancer (range 2–36%) and patients on dialysis (range 2–30%). Risk factors for non-response included older age, use of corticosteroids, immunosuppressive or anti-CD20 agent. Ten studies evaluated immunogenicity of an additional dose. Five studies evaluated vaccine efficacy or effectiveness: three on SARS-CoV-2 infection (range 71–81%), one on COVID-19-related hospitalization (62.9%), one had a too small sample size.
This systematic review highlights the risk of low immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines in immunocompromised populations, especially solid organ transplant recipients and patients with haematological malignancy. Despite lack of vaccine effectiveness data, enhanced vaccine regimens may be necessary.
The efficacy of vaccines against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has now been well established in phase III clinical trials. However, clinical studies based on real-world data remain critical to ...assess vaccines effectiveness (VE), especially in specific populations and against variants of concern (VOC). This review presents the principles and methods of VE studies and the main available results on VE of COVID-19 vaccines at the time of Omicron circulation. References for this narrative review were identified through searches of PubMed database up to 13 September 2022. The results of phase III clinical trials have been globally confirmed by VE in real-life studies, including in the elderly. Emergence of VOC Omicron emphasized the importance of booster doses to maintain a high level of protection against severe forms. There are still numerous challenges regarding booster(s) and duration of immunity, particularly in specific subpopulations, and regarding the need for adapted vaccines.
Pregnant women and infants are at high risk for severe influenza and many countries, including France, recommend annual influenza immunization during pregnancy. We aimed to estimate influenza ...vaccination and refusal rates and assess associated factors among pregnant women during the 2015-16 season in France. We used data from a national representative sample of women who gave birth in March 2016 and were interviewed before hospital discharge (N = 11,752). In the multivariable analysis, robust Poisson regression models were used to study associations with maternal characteristics and prenatal care characteristics. Influenza vaccine coverage among pregnant women was 7.4% (95% confidence interval CI: 6.9-7.9). Only 24.9% (95% CI: 24.2-25.7) of women said that they received a care provider proposal for vaccination and 70.4% (95% CI: 68.7-72.0) of these declined it. Vaccine uptake was associated with low parity (prevalence ratio PR = 2.1; 95% CI: 1.4-3.2 for parity 0 vs ≥ 3), high educational level (PR = 2.5; 95% CI: 2.0-3.2), healthcare occupation during pregnancy (PR = 1.8; 95% CI: 1.5-2.1) and preexisting conditions at risk for influenza (PR = 1.7; 95% CI: 1.3-2.2). Women were more frequently vaccinated when their main care provider was a general practitioner. Multiparae women and those with medium or low educational level were significantly more likely than others to decline influenza vaccine after a provider proposal. Influenza vaccine coverage is very low in France, mainly because of infrequent care provider proposals and also frequent women's refusals. Effective interventions should be designed to promote vaccination among medical professionals and reduce vaccine hesitancy among pregnant women.
This study aimed to assess: 1) vaccine hesitancy (VH) prevalence among French general practitioners (GPs) through the frequency of their vaccine recommendations, and 2) the determinants of these ...recommendations.
Cross-sectional observational study in 2014 nested in a national panel of 1712 randomly selected GPs in private practice in France. We constructed a score of self-reported recommendation frequency for 6 specific vaccines to target populations.
16% to 43% of GPs sometimes or never recommended at least one specific vaccine to their target patients. Multivariable logistic regressions of the dichotomized score showed that GPs recommended vaccines frequently when they felt comfortable explaining their benefits and risks to patients (OR=1.87; 1.35–2.59), or trusted official sources of information highly (OR=1.40; 1.01–1.93). They recommended vaccines infrequently when they considered that adverse effects were likely (OR=0.71; 0.52–0.96) or doubted the vaccine's utility (OR=0.21; 0.15–0.29).
Our findings show that after repeated vaccine controversies in France, some VH exists among French GPs, whose recommendation behaviors depend on their trust in authorities, their perception of the utility and risks of vaccines, and their comfort in explaining them. Further research is needed to confirm these results among health care workers in other countries.
•We assessed attitudes and behaviours of French GPs for 6 vaccine situations for which coverage in France is suboptimal.•The variation of vaccine recommendations according to vaccine suggests the existence of vaccine hesitancy among GPs.•GPs’ beliefs about vaccine risks and trust in health authorities are linked to vaccine hesitancy for controversial vaccines.•Vaccine hesitancy is also related to GPs' beliefs about vaccines’ utility, regardless of whether they are controversial.
In France, midwives have been authorized to prescribe vaccines since 2016. Yet vaccination coverage among pregnant women remains low. Understanding the knowledge, attitudes and practices of midwives ...regarding influenza vaccination could help improve coverage.
A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2017 among midwives practicing in the public and private sectors in Paris using an online questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression analysis of the data was conducted.
The response rate was 31% (n = 208/669). Overall, knowledge of influenza vaccine recommendations and of vaccine safety and effectiveness was high except regarding new-born immunity and influenza vaccine characteristics. Only 10% of midwives systematically prescribed the vaccine. Reported influenza vaccine uptake among midwives was 39%.
Efforts to improve the knowledge of midwives regarding the safety and effectiveness of vaccinating pregnant women in order to prevent influenza infection in newborns are necessary. Increasing vaccine uptake in both midwives and pregnant women will require adjusting education strategies.

Patient-reported zoster-related pain was assessed by validated questionnaires (Douleur Neuropathique en 4 Questions DN4, Zoster Brief Pain Inventory ZBPI, and Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory NPSI) on days 0 and 15, and at months 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12. Health-related quality of life was assessed by the 12-item short-form health survey (SF-12) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale on day 0 and at months 3, 6, and 12. The prevalence of zoster-related pain on day 0 and at months 3, 6, 9, and 12 was 79.6%, 11.6%, 8.5%, 7.4%, and 6.0%, respectively. Patients with persistent pain had lower scores on the physical and mental component summaries of the SF-12 and the ZBPI interference score than those without pain. By logistic regression analysis, main predictive factors on day 0 for postherpetic neuralgia at month 3 were age, male sex, ZBPI interference score, Physical Component Summary score of the SF-12, and neuropathic quality of pain (DN4 score ⩾4). Despite early diagnosis and treatment with antiviral agents, many patients with herpes zoster experience persistent pain and marked long-term reduction in health-related quality of life.
