The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has established the existence of a high-energy all-sky neutrino flux of astrophysical origin. This discovery was made using events interacting within a fiducial ...region of the detector surrounded by an active veto and with reconstructed energy above 60 TeV, commonly known as the high-energy starting event sample (HESE). We revisit the analysis of the HESE sample with an additional 4.5 years of data, newer glacial ice models, and improved systematics treatment. This paper describes the sample in detail, reports on the latest astrophysical neutrino flux measurements, and presents a source search for astrophysical neutrinos. We give the compatibility of these observations with specific isotropic flux models proposed in the literature as well as generic power-law-like scenarios. Assuming νe: νμ: ντ= 1 : 1 : 1 , and an equal flux of neutrinos and antineutrinos, we find that the astrophysical neutrino spectrum is compatible with an unbroken power law, with a preferred spectral index of 2.87−0.19+0.20 for the 68% confidence interval.
We present a measurement of atmospheric tau neutrino appearance from oscillations with three years of data from the DeepCore subarray of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. This analysis uses ...atmospheric neutrinos from the full sky with reconstructed energies between 5.6 and 56 GeV to search for a statistical excess of cascadelike neutrino events which are the signature of ντ interactions. For CC+NC (CC-only) interactions, we measure the tau neutrino normalization to be 0.73−0.24+0.30 (0.57−0.30+0.36) and exclude the absence of tau neutrino oscillations at a significance of 3.2σ (2.0σ) These results are consistent with, and of similar precision to, a confirmatory IceCube analysis also presented, as well as measurements performed by other experiments.
The results of a 3 + 1 sterile neutrino search using eight years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory are presented. A total of 305 735 muon neutrino events are analyzed in reconstructed ...energy-zenith space to test for signatures of a matter-enhanced oscillation that would occur given a sterile neutrino state with a mass-squared differences between 0.01 and 100 eV2. The best-fit point is found to be at sin2(2θ24) = 0.10 and Δm412 = 4.5 eV2, which is consistent with the no sterile neutrino hypothesis with a p value of 8.0%.
There are few iconic publications in the annals of clinical neuroscience that have had the impact of Paul Broca’s 1861 paper that appeared in the
Bulletin de la Société Anatomique
Broca (Bulletin ...Society Anatomique, 6:330–357,
1861
). It was, however, by no means his last word on the matter of language localization, specifically, or on the overarching principle of regional specialization of brain function. Thus we comment on English translations of two of his works: the original paper and another from 1865. Although the 1861 paper has received the most credit, his manuscript 4 years later and based on a much larger case series was the first to state based on empirical observation that the left frontal region was responsible for articulated speech. Moreover, his observations of aphasia recovery reported in this later work led to his own hypotheses on the importance of cerebral reorganization after injury and to the differences in reacquisition of adult language vis-à-vis the nature of initial language development that were verified a century later. He also proposed a method of language remediation whose efficacy was not established for another 100 years. Thus Broca’s contributions to the contemporary study of aphasia reach far beyond his initial case presentation.
Vehicle drivetrains are characterized by fast dynamics, subject to physical and control constraints, which make controller design for driveline oscillations damping a challenging problem. ...Furthermore, in current implementations, the connections between the controller and the physical plant are realized using a controller area network (CAN) as the communication medium, which introduces time-varying delays. As such, the goal of this paper is to provide a control design methodology that can cope with all these challenges and limitations and still yield an effective solution. To this end, firstly, a continuous-time model of a vehicle drivetrain is derived. Then, a method for determining a worst case upper bound on the delays that can be introduced by a CAN is presented, which enables the usage of a polytopic approximation technique to obtain a discrete-time model of the closed-loop CAN system. Thirdly, a non-conservative Lyapunov based predictive controller is designed for the resulting model with time-varying delays, polytopic uncertainty and hard constraints. Several tests performed using an industry validated drivetrain model and the Matlab toolbox TrueTime indicate that the proposed design methodology can handle both the performance/physical constraints and the strict limitations on the computational complexity, while effectively coping with time-varying delays. Preliminary real-time results further validate the proposed methodology.
A transient ischemic attack (TIA) in the brain is classically considered a syndrome lasting <24 hours. Having previously shown that an experimental challenge with the GABAA agonist midazolam in ...recovered stroke patients can reinduce the acute clinical state, we determined whether TIA patients would demonstrate a similar effect.
Four right-handed patients participated: 3 with clinical TIA presumed to have affected the left hemisphere within the previous 24 to 72 hours and no evidence of a new lesion on diffusion-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery imaging, and 1 patient with an asymptomatic temporal arteriovenous malformation. The TIA duration ranged from 30 minutes to 3 hours. Each patient underwent baseline testing for motor function and aphasia, after which intravenous midazolam was delivered until mild drowsiness was detected. Patients were tested during the peak drug effect and again after 2 hours when sedation had dissipated.
No patient showed weakness or aphasia at baseline. After administration of midazolam, all 3 TIA patients demonstrated re-emergence of features that characterized their recent transient neurological syndromes (right-sided weakness and/or aphasia) but no left-sided findings. The arteriovenous malformation patient who had never been symptomatic showed no drug effect. Two hours later, all TIA patients returned to their normal clinical state.
Patients who had suffered recent transient cerebral ischemic episodes and were neurologically intact with negative diffusion-weighted imaging showed re-emergence of prior focal deficits after administration of a benzodiazepine in a dose that produces light sedation. These findings suggest that presumed TIA may produce neuronal dysfunction beyond the symptomatic period.
Model predictive control (MPC) is one of the few advanced control methodologies that have proven to be very successful in real-life applications. An attractive feature of MPC is its capability of ...explicitly taking state and input constraints into account. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the usage of MPC schemes to control electrical power networks. The major obstacle for implementation lies in the large scale of these systems, which is prohibitive for a centralised approach. In this article, we therefore assess and compare the suitability of several non-centralised predictive control schemes for power balancing, to provide valuable insights that can contribute to the successful implementation of non-centralised MPC in the real-life electrical power system.
Along their long propagation from production to detection, neutrinos undergo flavour conversions that convert their types or flavours1,2. High-energy astrophysical neutrinos propagate unperturbed ...over a billion light years in vacuum3 and are sensitive to small effects caused by new physics. Effects of quantum gravity4 are expected to appear at the Planck energy scale. Such a high-energy universe would have existed only immediately after the Big Bang and is inaccessible by human technologies. On the other hand, quantum gravity effects may exist in our low-energy vacuum5–8, but are suppressed by inverse powers of the Planck energy. Measuring the coupling of particles to such small effects is difficult via kinematic observables, but could be observable through flavour conversions. Here we report a search with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, using astrophysical neutrino flavours9,10 to search for new space–time structure. We did not find any evidence of anomalous flavour conversion in the IceCube astrophysical neutrino flavour data. We apply the most stringent limits of any known technologies, down to 10−42 GeV−2 with Bayes factor greater than 10 on the dimension-six operators that parameterize the space–time defects. We thus unambiguously reach the parameter space of quantum-gravity-motivated physics.The IceCube Collaboration reports a search for quantum gravity effects imprinted in flavour conversions of astrophysical neutrinos. No evidence for anomalous conversions between neutrino flavours is observed.
Central poststroke pain (CPSP) is an infrequently recognized complication of lateral medullary infarction (LMI). We determined the frequency, nature, and predictors of this complication in 63 ...patients with LMI. The hypothesis tested was that the degree of clinical sensory loss and extent of infarction seen on MRI, both graded by a predetermined scoring scale, would be predictive of CPSP. We also performed quantitative sensory testing (QST) of thermal and pressure sensation thresholds in a subgroup of 19 patients (nine with CPSP and 10 without) to analyze in detail the spinothalamic and trigeminothalamic systems mediating these modalities from both sides of the face and body. We analyzed these results for specific markers of CPSP.
CPSP developed in 25% (16/63) of the patients, all within 6 months. This was constant and severe with frequent allodynia, but responded in all cases to amitriptyline and recurred promptly on attempted weaning. CPSP affected the ipsilateral peri-orbital region most commonly, either alone or in combination with the contralateral limbs. Ipsilateral neurotrophic facial ulceration developed in two cases. CPSP correlated significantly (Fisher's exact test, p < 0.0002) with the degree of clinical sensory loss but not with the size of infarction seen on MRI (Fisher's exact test, p = 0.7). QST revealed a highly specific (100%) and sensitive (89%) finding for CPSP-thresholds from the check contralateral to the LMI were normal in eight of nine cases with CPSP and abnormal in all of the 10 cases without CPSP. Abnormalities in the face contralateral to the infarct are referable to the crossed trigeminothalamic tract in the medullary reticular formation medial to the infarcted lateral medulla. We conclude that this argues for the theory that central pain is caused by denervation sensitivity of the "paleo"-reticulothalamic connections due to a selective "neo"-spinothalamic lesion.
