Tuberculosis transmission continues to be a major public health challenge. In this cluster-randomized, controlled trial conducted in Vietnam, active community-wide screening for tuberculosis over 4 ...years is shown to decrease the prevalence of tuberculosis.
OBJECTIVE:We assessed the association between methamphetamine use and lack of viral suppression among a cohort of HIV-seropositive persons who inject drugs (PWID) in Hai Phong, Vietnam.
DESIGN:Cohort ...study with random effects logit modeling and mediation analysis for antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence.
METHODS:PWID were recruited from October 2016 to October 2017; HIV-seropositive PWID were enrolled in a cohort to assess HIV viral loads, changes in drug use, risk behaviors, and ART adherence during 24-month follow-up. Methamphetamine use in last 30 days was divided into three categories0 days (no use), 1–19 days (intermediate), and 20 or more days (heavy). Bivariate and a multivariable random effects logit models were used to assess the relationship between methamphetamine use and not being virally suppressed. We also assessed self-reported ART adherence as a mediating factor.
RESULTS:A total of 645 HIV-seropositive PWID were included at baseline; 95% male, average age 40 (SD = 6.4). At baseline, methamphetamine use in last 30 days was 64% no use, 32% intermediate use, 4% heavy use. Approximately 74% of PWID reported high/complete adherence; 76% were at viral suppression. In random effects analysis, recent methamphetamine use was associated with not being virally suppressed during follow-up (adjusted odds ratio1.84, 95% confidence interval1.06, 3.17); the effect was not explained by a mediating effect of self-reported adherence to ART.
CONCLUSION:Recent methamphetamine use is associated with not being virally suppressed among PWID. The results of this study indicate the need for targeted interventions for methamphetamine use with special focus on those with HIV infection.
Striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) farming in the Mekong Delta Vietnam (MKDVN) importantly contributes to national aquaculture export. Currently, however, diseases occur more frequently ...across the entire MKDVN region. One of the most common types is hemorrhagic septicemia caused by Aeromonas hydrophila. In this study, isolation and selection of the phages for control in vitro Aeromonas hydrophila were conducted. 24 phages were isolated from 100 striped catfish pond water samples. Next, lytic activity of these phages was clarified. Four phages with short latent period (about 25 to 40 min) and/or high burst size (about 67 to 94 PFU/ cell) were selected to evaluate their infection activity to different phage-resistant A. hydrophila strains. Two phages termed as TG25P and CT45P were subjected to the phage cocktail to inactivate A. hydrophila. Re-growth of the host bacteria appeared about eight hours after treatment. Usage of the phage cocktail that attach different host bacterial receptors is not always much effective than usage of single phage. This is the first report about phage therapy to control A. hydrophila isolated from striped catfish. Some challenges in the phage cocktail were shown to achieve strategies in prospective studies in the context of high antibiotic resistance of A. hydrophila.
The striped catfish, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, is a freshwater and benthopelagic fish common in the Mekong River delta. Catfish constitute a valuable source of dietary protein. Therefore, they are ...cultured worldwide, and P. hypophthalmus is a food staple in the Mekong area. However, genetic information about the culture stock, is unavailable for breeding improvement, although genetics of the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, has been reported. To acquire genome sequence data as a useful resource for marker-assisted breeding, we decoded a draft genome of P. hypophthalmus and performed comparative analyses.
Using the Illumina platform, we obtained both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences. Molecular phylogeny using the mitochondrial genome confirmed that P. hypophthalmus is a member of the family Pangasiidae and is nested within a clade including the families Cranoglanididae and Ictaluridae. The nuclear genome was estimated at approximately 700 Mb, assembled into 568 scaffolds with an N50 of 14.29 Mbp, and was estimated to contain ~ 28,600 protein-coding genes, comparable to those of channel catfish and zebrafish. Interestingly, zebrafish produce gadusol, but genes for biosynthesis of this sunscreen compound have been lost from catfish genomes. The differences in gene contents between these two catfishes were found in genes for vitamin D-binding protein and cytosolic phospholipase A
, which have lost only in channel catfish. The Hox cluster in catfish genomes comprised seven paralogous groups, similar to that of zebrafish, and comparative analysis clarified catfish lineage-specific losses of A5a, B10a, and A11a. Genes for insulin-like growth factor (IGF) signaling were conserved between the two catfish genomes. In addition to identification of MHC class I and sex determination-related gene loci, the hypothetical chromosomes by comparison with the channel catfish demonstrated the usefulness of the striped catfish genome as a marker resource.
We developed genomic resources for the striped catfish. Possible conservation of genes for development and marker candidates were confirmed by comparing the assembled genome to that of a model fish, Danio rerio, and to channel catfish. Since the catfish genomic constituent resembles that of zebrafish, it is likely that zebrafish data for gene functions is applicable to striped catfish as well.

Objective: To evaluate the value of contrast volume/glomerular filtration ratio (Vc/eGFR ratio) and urine Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (uNGAL) in predicting the progression contract ...associated-acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) to chronic kidney disease (CKD) in planned percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) patients. Patients and Methods: We examined 387 adult patients who had undergone planned percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We determined acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) using the criteria set by the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO). We calculated the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using the CKD-EPI formula based on serum creatinine levels. To determine the Vc/eGFR ratio, we considered the contrast medium volume and eGFR for each patient. Additionally, we measured urine NGAL levels using the ELISA method. Results: The percentage of CA-AKI patients who developed CKD after planned PCI was 36.36%. Within the CA-AKI to CKD group, the Vc/eGFR ratio was 2.82, and uNGAL levels were significantly higher at 72.74 ng/mL compared to 1.93 ng/mL for Vc/eGFR ratio and 46.57 ng/mL for uNGAL in the recovery CA-AKI group. This difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). Diabetic mellitus, urine NGAL concentration, and Vc/eGFR ratio were found to be independent factors in the progression of CA-AKI to CKD. The Vc/eGFR ratio and uNGAL showed predictive capabilities for progressing CA-AKI to CKD with an AUC of 0.884 and 0.878, respectively. The sensitivity was 81.3% for both, while the specificity was 89.3% for Vc/eGFR ratio and 85.7% for uNGAL. Conclusion: The Vc/eGFR ratio and uNGAL were good predictors for CA-AKI to CKD in planned PCI patients. Keywords: planned percutaneous coronary intervention, contract associated-acute kidney injury, CA-AKI progression to CKD, Vc/eGFR ratio, uNGAL
The bacteriophage vB_AhM_PVN02 (PVN02), infecting
Aeromonas hydrophila
, was isolated from a striped catfish pond water sample in Can Tho City, Vietnam. The phage had high lytic activity with a ...latent period and burst size of approximately 20 min and 105 plaque-forming units per cell, respectively. Observation of the phage by transmission electron microscopy indicated that PVN02 belongs to the family
Myoviridae
. The genome of PVN02 is a double-stranded linear DNA with a length in 51,668 bp and a content of 52% GC. Among the 64 genes, 16 were predicted to encode proteins with predicted functions. No virulence or antibiotic resistance genes were found in the genome, suggesting it would be a useful biocontrol agent. Classification of the phage based on sequence comparisons, phylogenetic analysis, and gene-sharing networks was carried out, and it was found to be the first representative of a new species within a previously undefined genus in the family
Myoviridae
. This study confirmed that PVN02 is a novel lytic phage that could potentially be used as an agent to control
Aeromonas hydrophila
in striped catfish in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.
Herein, we described a tunable method for synthesis of novel hollow mesoporous carbon (MPC) via direct pyrolysis (800
C) of MIL-53 (Fe) as a self-sacrificed template. The structural characterization ...revealed a hollow, amorphous, defective and mesoporous MPC along with high surface area (approx. 200 m
g
). For the experiments of ibuprofen adsorption onto MPC, effects of contact time, MPC dosage, ionic strength, concentration and temperature were systematically investigated. The optimal conditions consisted of pH = 3, concentration 10 mg l
and dose of 0.1 g l
for the highest ibuprofen removal efficiency up to 88.3% after 4 h. Moreover, adsorption behaviour, whereby chemisorption and monolayer controlled the uptake of ibuprofen over MPC, were assumed. Adsorption mechanisms including H-bonding, π-π interaction, metal-oxygen, electrostatic attraction were rigorously proposed. In comparison to several studies, the MPC nanocomposite in this work obtained the outstanding maximum adsorption capacity (206.5 mg g
) and good reusability (5 cycles); thus, it can be used as a feasible alternative for decontamination of ibuprofen anti-inflammatory drug from water.
Golden Camellias have recently been used as a food, cosmetic, and traditional medicine in China and Vietnam. Forty‐two species have natural distribution in Vietnam, of which thirty‐two species were ...considered endemic species of this country. The morphology of leaves and flowers of these species were similar; therefore, their taxonomic identification usually needed experts and the authentication has often been confused among species. Our study aims to describe the genetic diversity and the relationship of six species Camellia phanii, Camellia tamdaoensis, Camellia tienii, Camellia flava, Camellia petelotii and Camellia euphlebia by using three chloroplast DNA‐barcodes: matK, rbcL and trnH‐psbA. We also clarified the significant differences in anatomical characteristics of midvein and blade of their leaves, which suggested the possibility to use these criteria in taxonomy. In addition, preliminary chemical profiles of the methanolic extracts of leaves from six Golden Camellias such as total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total anthocyanin content (TAC) and chlorogenic acids content (TCGAs) also showed the diversity among them. Interestingly, the discrimination on the catechins profile among six species followed the same tendency with the genetic distance on the phylogeny tree suggesting that catechins (i. e., discriminative catechins) can be biomarkers for the chemotaxonomy of these six Golden Camellias.
In this randomized trial, HIV-positive adults with tuberculous meningitis were assigned to receive 6 to 8 weeks of dexamethasone or placebo in addition to tuberculosis treatment. No benefit of ...dexamethasone was observed.
Striped catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus farmed in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, represents an important contribution to Vietnamese aquaculture exports. However, these fish are affected by frequent ...disease outbreaks across the entire region. One of the most common infections involves white spots in the internal organs, caused by the bacterium Edwardsiella ictaluri. In this study, a virulent phage specific to E. ictaluri, designated MK7, was isolated from striped catfish kidney and liver samples and characterized. Morphological analysis indicates probable placement in the family Myoviridae with a 65 nm icosahedral head and a 147 %%CONV_ERR%% 19 nm tail. A double-stranded DNA genome of approximately 34 kb was predicted by restriction fragment analysis following digestion with SmaI. The adsorption affinity (ka) of the MK7 phage was estimated as 1.6 %%CONV_ERR%% 10-8 ml CFU-1 min-1, and according to a 1-step growth curve, its latent period and burst size were ~45 min and ~55 phage particles per infected host cell, respectively. Of the 17 bacterial strains tested, MK7 only infected E. ictaluri, although other species of Edwardsiella were not tested. E. ictaluri was also challenged in vitro, in both broth and water from a striped catfish pond and was inactivated by MK7 for 15 h in broth and 51 h in pond water. Thus, initial characterization of phage MK7 indicates its potential utility as a biotherapeutic agent against E. ictaluri infection in striped catfish. This is the first report of a lytic phage specific to an important striped catfish pathogen.
