We report on the thermal conductivities of two-dimensional metal halide perovskite films measured by time domain thermoreflectance. Depending on the molecular substructure of ammonium cations and ...owing to the weaker interactions in the layered structures, the thermal conductivities of our two-dimensional hybrid perovskites range from 0.10 to 0.19 W m–1 K–1, which is drastically lower than that of their three-dimensional counterparts. We use molecular dynamics simulations to show that the organic component induces a reduction of the stiffness and sound velocities along with giving rise to vibrational modes in the 5–15 THz range that are absent in the three-dimensional counterparts. By systematically studying eight different two-dimensional hybrid perovskites, we show that the thermal conductivities of our hybrid films do not depend on the thicknesses of the organic layers and instead are highly dependent on the relative orientation of the organic chains sandwiched between the inorganic constituents.
In recent years, some researchers have been interested in whether robustness and blindness can be simultaneously secured in a watermarking based on machine learning. However, achieving robustness ...against various attacks at once is still difficult for watermarking techniques. To address the problem, in this paper, we propose a learning framework for robust and blind watermarking based on reinforcement learning. We repeat three stages: watermark embedding, attack simulation, and weight updating. Specifically, we present image watermarking networks called WMNet using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Two methods to embed a watermark are proposed and these two methods are based on backpropagation and autoencoder, respectively. We can optimize the robustness while carefully considering the invisibility of the watermarking system. The experimental results show that the trained WMNet captures more robust features than the current watermarking schemes, which use the frequency domain. The trade-off between the robustness and the invisibility of each technique was measured. Also, we adopt a visual masking with which we can achieve the appropriate balance between robustness and invisibility of the watermark. Our reinforcement-learning-based technique has better robustness than the existing techniques for both attacks seen in learning and unseen attacks. Due to the generalization ability of WMNet, moreover, it shows high robustness against multiple attacks and various levels of attacks which are not considered in training stage.
Many governments find it challenging to set up a regulatory regime to govern rapidly developing Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) technologies empowered by Artificial Intelligence. This paper analyzes ...flexible regulation as a tool for assessing regulatory reforms that govern disruptive innovations such as AVs. After defining flexible regulation as regulation that gives regulated entities choices for how to comply with the regulatory objectives, this paper develops Regulatory Flexibility Indicators (RFI) for rule structure, enforcement structure, and regulatory feedback. We study AVs regulatory reforms that took place recently in the United Kingdom and South Korea, focusing on how such reforms have enhanced regulation flexibility. This paper finds that regulatory governance in the United Kingdom is more flexible than in South Korea, indicating aspects of further reforms for improving regulatory flexibility.
Long carrier lifetime is what makes hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites high-performance photovoltaic materials. Several microscopic mechanisms behind the unusually long carrier lifetime have been ...proposed, such as formation of large polarons, Rashba effect, ferroelectric domains, and photon recycling. Here, we show that the screening of band-edge charge carriers by rotation of organic cation molecules can be a major contribution to the prolonged carrier lifetime. Our results reveal that the band-edge carrier lifetime increases when the system enters from a phase with lower rotational entropy to another phase with higher entropy. These results imply that the recombination of the photoexcited electrons and holes is suppressed by the screening, leading to the formation of polarons and thereby extending the lifetime. Thus, searching for organic–inorganic perovskites with high rotational entropy over a wide range of temperature may be a key to achieve superior solar cell performance.
In contrast to common continuous wings, microscopic flying insects such as fairyfly and thrips possess extraordinary wings that comprise several bristles. In the low-Reynolds-number environment ...inhabited by these insects, a bristled wing benefits from the formation of virtual fluid barriers that prevent flow leakage in the gaps of bristles. In this study, the optimal configuration regarding the aerodynamic performance of simple bristled-wing models is investigated numerically in terms of the Reynolds number and the distance between bristles, which are known to be important parameters for determining the effectiveness of a virtual fluid barrier. Inspired by the inherent characteristics of low-Reynolds-number flow, we provide new insights into the aerodynamics of a bristled wing by using a scaling parameter that combines these two independent parameters: effective gap width. In addition, the force ratio is scaled with the Reynolds number to better characterize the generation of drag and lift by a bristled wing. Despite the Reynolds number and the gap width varying by several orders of magnitude, the scaled drag force converges asymptotically beyond a specific effective gap width, and the lift force ratio has a peak within a very narrow range of the effective gap width. The trend of the lift with the effective gap width is correlated with changes in the asymmetric distributions of pressure and vorticity on the surface of the bristles. In addition, the drag and lift predicted theoretically, by invoking the linear superposition of creeping flows, agree well with numerical results, in particular for large effective gap width.
Although intravenous administration of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is effective for experimental stroke, low engraftment and the limited functional capacity of transplanted cells are critical ...hurdles for clinical applications. C–C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) is associated with neurological repair after stroke and delivery of various cells into the brain via CCL2/CCR2 (CCL2 receptor) interaction. In this study, after CCL2-overexpressing human umbilical cord-derived MSCs (hUC-MSCs) were intravenously transplanted with mannitol in rats with middle cerebral arterial occlusion, we compared the differences between four different treatment groups: mannitol + CCL2-overexpressing hUC-MSCs (CCL2-MSC), mannitol + naïve hUC-MSCs (M-MSC), mannitol only, and control. At four-weeks post-transplantation, the CCL2-MSC group showed significantly better functional recovery and smaller stroke volume relative to the other groups. Additionally, we observed upregulated levels of CCR2 in acute ischemic brain and the increase of migrated stem cells into these areas in the CCL2-MSC group relative to the M-MSC. Moreover, the CCL2-MSC group displayed increased angiogenesis and endogenous neurogenesis, decreased neuro-inflammation but with increased healing-process inflammatory cells relative to other groups. These findings indicated that CCL2-overexpressing hUC-MSCs showed better functional recovery relative to naïve hUC-MSCs according to the increased migration of these cells into brain areas of higher CCR2 expression, thereby promoting subsequent endogenous brain repair.
Since around the year 2000, hundreds of people in Korea have developed humidifier disinfectant‐associated lung injury (HDLI). We collected all HD exposure‐related information from the field ...investigations into the locations in which the 1199 registered patients had used HD. Among the people who registered, 38% (1st round = 214, 2nd = 73, 3rd = 166) were confirmed as HDLI patients. Children aged under eight years old made up the highest proportion of HDLI cases (N = 279, 62%), followed by pregnant women (N = 31, 7%). One hundred thirty‐three (29%) of the confirmed HDLI patients died. Fifty‐seven percent of HDLI patients (N = 259) developed HDLI after <1 year of HD use. The number of HDLI patients who used only the Oxy Saksak HD brand was found to be 176 (39%), followed by the brands Cefu (N = 27, 6%) and Aekyung (N = 22, 5%). HD products containing only polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate (PHMG‐P) were the most frequently used among HDLI patients (N = 234, 52%), followed by oligo (2‐(2‐ethoxy)ethoxyethyl) guanidinium (PGH) (N = 27, 6%) and a mixture of chloromethylisothiazolinone (CMIT) and methylisothiazolinone (MIT) (N = 26, 6%). The average PHMG‐P inhalation level estimated from the patient group classified as suffering lung injury definitely associated with HD use was 145.1 μg/m3 (N = 91, SD = 395.1 μg/m3), higher than levels estimated from both the probable and possible HDLI patient groups. In conclusion, HD exposure‐related variables, including type of HD brand and estimated inhalation HD level, were associated with the risk of HDLI.
Femoral neck fracture is a common osteoporotic fracture in elderly patients and is effectively managed with arthroplasty. However, the benefits and risks of a surgical drain after arthroplasty in ...these patients are still debatable. Hence, we conducted this study to investigate the necessity of a surgical drain after hemiarthroplasty in elderly patients with femoral neck fracture. This study enrolled elderly patients (aged ≥ 70 years) who underwent cementless bipolar hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fracture between April 2016 and December 2021. The patients were divided into two groups; the control group (199 patients) with a surgical drain after surgery performed between April 2016 and June 2020 and the study group (134 patients) with no surgical drain between July 2020 and December 2021. The demographics, perioperative data, and postoperative complications were compared between the two groups. Estimated blood loss, perioperative transfusion volume and rate, and length of hospital stay were significantly lower in the study group than in the control group (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.008, and p < 0.001, respectively). Although there were no significant intergroup differences in the length of intensive care unit stay and in-hospital, 1-month, and 1-year mortalities, the incidence of postoperative medical complications was significantly lower in the study group than the control group (p = 0.001). A surgical drain may be unnecessary after hemiarthroplasty in elderly patients with femoral neck fracture considering less blood loss and transfusion, lower incidence of postoperative medical complications, and shorter hospital stay in the study group with no surgical drain.
ABSTRACT
The therapeutic effect of oral administration of Lactobacillus rhamnosus IDCC 3201 tyndallizate (RHT3201) on atopic dermatitis (AD)‐like skin lesions in NC/Nga mice were investigated. After ...induction of dermatitis in NC/Nga mice with house‐dust mite extract, each group was fed RHT3201 with 1 × 108, 1 × 109, or 1 × 1010 cells orally once a day for 8 weeks. Dermatitis scores and frequency of scratching were improved by oral feeding with RHT3201. In contrast to the control group, RHT3201‐fed mice showed significantly down‐regulated mast cell numbers and serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) concentrations had significantly less IL4 in their axillary lymph node cells. The therapeutic effect of RHT3201 was found to be dose‐dependent. These findings indicate that RHT3201 has potential for treating AD.
