The designations of the Greeks of Asia in classical literature bear witness to a process which has been highlighted in studies on ethnicity (relational character, dynamism, interaction between ...exogenous and endogenous appellations), but they also prove to be self-interested and contextual, so that there was no linear evolution which would have unanimously led e.g. from «Ionians» to «Greeks of Asia». Far from always either serving a «neutral» description or taking part in the construction of a collective identity, more often than not they testify to political uses of language in specific contexts.

Anytos is thought to be the first person who corrupted an Athenian popular court for his own advantage (409 bc). However, this alleged deed had no known consequences for his political career or his ...reputation among Socratic writers. Therefore, this paper offers a critical study of the Greek literary tradition. It considers the hypothesis that Anytos was the object of a malicious allegation that could draw upon the gibes of ancient comedy. The paper traces the possible genealogy of Aristotle's assertion (AP 27.5), and concludes that it is questionable to cite this alleged incident as proof that it was possible successfully to corrupt an Athenian court.
Jules Isaac wrote Les Oligarques in hiding in 1942. This book focusses on Athenian adversaries of democracy who took advantage of Athens’ defeat by Sparta in order to dissolve the democracy with the ...help of the enemy. Resemblances to contemporary events, once France was defeated by Germany, inspired Isaac to develop this subject : the installation of an anti-democratic government that collaborated with Hitler, the general abolition of civil liberties, the persecutions of Jews, in particular the civic degradation of French citizens such as the author himself, influenced Isaac’s interpretation of the ancient events in a book that deliberately defies classification according to genre.
En 1942, l’historien Jules Isaac achève dans la clandestinité un ouvrage intitulé Les Oligarques.
Il y traite des adversaires athéniens de la démocratie qui, en 404 avant J.-C., profitèrent de la défaite face à Sparte pour renverser le régime avec l’assistance de l’ennemi. Le sujet lui est inspiré par ses ressemblances avec l’actualité, après la défaite de la France face aux Allemands, la mise en place d’un gouvernement antidémocratique collaborant avec Hitler, l’abolition générale des libertés, puis les persécutions contre les Juifs, à commencer par la dégradation civique de Français tels que l’auteur. En retour, cette actualité influence l’interprétation que ce dernier propose des événements antiques, dans un ouvrage au genre délibérément inclassable.
The Hippocratic treatise Airs, Waters, Places is the first preserved text to use the word “Asians”, a term that is at the heart of its theory of environmental influence on ethnic features. Despite ...its human and spatial meaning, its oppositional value and the stereotypes which it conveys, the word shares in the ambiguities of a complex theory and displays subtle nuances that undermine seeing it as a purely ideological construction. Therefore, it cannot be considered as an equivalent to the modern “Orientals”.
Le traité hippocratique Airs, Eaux, Lieux est le premier texte conservé à employer le terme d’Asiatiques, qu’il place au cœur de sa théorie de l’influence environnementale sur les caractères ethniques. Malgré son sens humain et spatial, sa valeur oppositionnelle et les stéréotypes qu’il véhicule, le mot s’inscrit dans une théorie aux ramifications complexes et présente des équivoques qui contrarient l’hypothèse d’une pure construction idéologique et interdisent d’en faire l’équivalent des modernes « Orientaux ».
