To determine the diagnostic value of 3.0 Tesla MRI for imaging carpal ligaments and triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC). Image quality of different optimized MRI sequences is evaluated for high ...resolution wrist anatomy.
Ten healthy volunteers were examined at 3.0 T and 1.5 T using following sequences: T1 SE, fat-saturated PD-/T2-TSE, TIRM, 3D T1/T2* DESS, 3D-CISS, 2D and 3D T2* MEDIC. Voxel size varied from 0.2 x 0.2 x 1.5 mm (2D sequences) to 0.33 mm (3) and 0.26 mm (3) (3D sequences). Image quality (signal-to-noise-ratio, contrast-to-noise-ratio, artifacts) and carpal ligament/TFCC detection rate were judged by a score. The results obtained from the 3.0 T and 1.5 T devices were compared.
With identical voxel size, image matrix and FOV, 3.0 T MRI provided significantly better image quality and ligament detection rates for all sequences in comparison with 1.5 T. The 2D and 3D MEDIC sequences yielded best image quality and detection rates. Excellent image quality and visualization of ligament structures by the fat-suppressed PD-TSE sequence were compromised by a relatively high susceptibility to pulsation and motion artifacts. T1 SE and 3D DESS sequences gave moderate image quality and allowed only partial differentiation between ligament structures. TIRM, T2-TSE and 3D-CISS sequence proved to be unsuitable for examining ligaments at 3.0 T due to their poor image quality and detection rate.
3.0 T MRI of the wrist proved to be superior to 1.5 T MRI for high-resolution imaging of carpal ligaments and TFCC using 2D and 3D T2* MEDIC sequences. Clinical studies investigating ligament injuries or carpal instability are recommended for evaluating clinical relevance of high-resolution MRI of the wrist.
In our article “Kinoreformbewegung Revisited” we presented the performance of educational screenings in Germany before 1914, as promoted and also organized by the Kinoreformbewegung (cinema reform ...movement).¹ The latter was in fact not a homogenous movement but rather an amalgamation of different social and political interest groups (teachers, clergymen, medical doctors, lawyers, functionaries, and the like) with diverging motivations and aims. Une équipe internationale constituée de 21 chercheurs en théâtre, cinéma, divertissements populaires, littérature, médias et musique présente dans cet ouvrage les résultats de l'analyse du fonds ...d'archives de la ART (Association de la Régie Théâtrale). Cette vaste collection de plus de 6 500 documents porte sur 2 000 spectacles créés à Paris et repris en tournée – y compris en Afrique, en Europe et au Canada – entre 1850 et 1950. Créée par les praticiens de théâtre au fil des productions, ces documents d'une richesse exceptionnelle permettent aux chercheurs de pénétrer au cœur même de la fabrique du spectacle au moment où apparaît et s'impose la figure du metteur en scène. Par une approche transversale attentive aux traces et indices et dans un va et vient continu entre observation et conceptualisation, ils en dégagent le tableau d'une pratique théâtrale dynamique et variée qui n'hésite pas à intégrer les technologies reproductives à son arsenal créatif. Le théâtre de cette époque apparaît ainsi bien plus technologisé que l'image que nous en avons. Organisé en quatres axes – « Esthétique et technologie du son », « Esthétiques du visuel », « Mise en scène » et « Dynamiques intermédiales », l'examen des documents rend compte de la présence sur scène de la peinture, de la scénographie, de la technologie sonore, de la musique, du chant, de la photographie, de la magie et du cinéma. On a pris l'habitude de dire que l'œuvre de Georges Méliès préfigurait tout à la fois le cinéma narratif, les productions hollywoodiennes à grand spectacle et les films de science-fiction à effets ...spéciaux. Les recherches historiques présentées dans cet ouvrage montrent au contraire que Méliès s'attachait moins à inaugurer un nouvel art, une nouvelle industrie, qu'à perpétuer par le truchement du cinématographe ces pratiques culturelles que sont la lanterne magique, la caricature, le numéro de scène, le sketch magique, la pantomime, la féerie, etc. Ce livre a ainsi pour ambition de renouveler notre connaissance de l'œuvre cinématographique de Méliès, en interrogeant son travail à partir de chacune de ces pratiques et du contexte socioéconomique dans lequel elles s'inscrivaient. Les contributions savantes rassemblées dans la première partie de ce volume sont issues du colloque de Cerisy qui s'est tenu en 2011 à l'occasion du 150e anniversaire de la naissance de Méliès. Les actes du colloque sont suivis par une édition critique de la correspondance francophone de Méliès établie par Jacques Malthête. Réunissant près de deux cents lettres conservées dans des institutions patrimoniales ou des collections privées, ce corpus épistolaire forme un ensemble documentaire précieux pour questionner à nouveaux frais l'œuvre de Méliès et sa conception du cinéma.

The World s oceans host a variety of sulfidic habitats. Yet, microorganisms oxidizing reduced inorganic sulfur compounds have mostly been studied at hydrothermal vents, in anoxic basins, conspicuous ...microbial mats and symbioses but rarely in coastal sediments. In this thesis sulfur-oxidizing prokaryotes (SOP) of a eutrophic intertidal sand flat in the German Wadden Sea were investigated by molecular techniques. The diversity, abundance and activity of SOP were analyzed in particular among the Gammaproteobacteria. Comparative sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA and three genes involved in sulfur oxidation revealed a high diversity of mainly gammaproteobacterial SOP. Most of them were closely related to thiotrophic symbionts, including those of the tubeworm genus Oligobrachia. A group of free-living relatives accounted for up to 4% of all cells (~1.3 × 108 cells ml-1). Consistent with a presumed chemolithoautotrophic utilization of inorganic sulfur compounds, these and numerous other members of the Gammaproteobacteria incorporated 14CO2 as revealed by microautoradiography (MAR). The findings demonstrate that non-filamentous Gammaproteobacteria are important catalysts of sedimentary sulfur oxidation and contribute to CO2-fixation in coastal surface sediments. Similarly, Roseobacter clade bacteria (RCB) accounted for unexpectedly high abundances of up to 10% of all cells in surface sediments (~2.5 × 108 cells ml-1). A RCB-related genome fragment of 35 kb was recovered from a metagenomic fosmid library. It encoded genes of the SOX multienzyme system including the sulfur dehydogenase SoxCD, but also the complete rDSR pathway, a gene arrangement that is unique among SOP. Gene-targeted FISH confirmed the presence of the gene dsrA in sedimentary RCB enriched in anaerobic sulfidic medium. In addition, a novel gene, which encodes a putative dioxygenase, designated as dsrU, was identified in the rDSR pathway. Protocols were developed for application of MAR and nano-scale secondary ion mass spectroscopy (nanoSIMS) to marine sediment samples to follow assimilation of acetate in single cells. Members of the Gammaproteobacteria appeared to assimilate slightly more acetate than RCB, whereas sulfate-reducing bacteria showed no significant incorporation. Particularly the combination of flow cytometry and nanoSIMS proved to be powerful for up-scaling of the analysis of substrate uptake by sediment bacteria enabling an efficient, high-resolution profiling of single cells from complex microbial communities.

It is well known that before World War I the French film industry played an important, if not the leading, role in Germany. Starting with the cinema’s earliest years, and continuing well into the ...teens, Germany’s western neighbour dominated the international market in all relevant fields: film production, distribution, as well as exhibition. In this essay we would like to give several examples to illustrate how the French presence developed in Germany, what sort of shape it took, and how French companies and their products were received. Additionally, we will sketch the forays German companies made into the French market.
