We report on the observations of an electron vortex magnetic hole corresponding to a new type of coherent structure in the turbulent magnetosheath plasma using the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission ...data. The magnetic hole is characterized by a magnetic depression, a density peak, a total electron temperature increase (with a parallel temperature decrease but a perpendicular temperature increase), and strong currents carried by the electrons. The current has a dip in the core region and a peak in the outer region of the magnetic hole. The estimated size of the magnetic hole is about 0.23 i (∼30 e) in the quasi-circular cross-section perpendicular to its axis, where i and e are respectively the proton and electron gyroradius. There are no clear enhancements seen in high-energy electron fluxes. However, there is an enhancement in the perpendicular electron fluxes at 90° pitch angle inside the magnetic hole, implying that the electrons are trapped within it. The variations of the electron velocity components Vem and Ven suggest that an electron vortex is formed by trapping electrons inside the magnetic hole in the cross-section in the M-N plane. These observations demonstrate the existence of a new type of coherent structures behaving as an electron vortex magnetic hole in turbulent space plasmas as predicted by recent kinetic simulations.
Gut barrier dysfunction is often implicated in pathology following alcohol intoxication and burn injury. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are negative regulators of gene expression that play a central role in gut ...homeostasis, although their role after alcohol and burn injury is poorly understood. We performed an integrated analysis of miRNA and RNA sequencing data to identify a network of interactions within small intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) which could promote gut barrier disruption. Mice were gavaged with ~ 2.9 g/kg ethanol and four hours later given a ~ 12.5% TBSA full thickness scald injury. One day later, IECs were harvested and total RNA extracted for RNA-seq and miRNA-seq. RNA sequencing showed 712 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (padj < 0.05) in IECs following alcohol and burn injury. Furthermore, miRNA sequencing revealed 17 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) (padj < 0.1). Utilizing the miRNet, miRDB and TargetScan databases, we identified both validated and predicted miRNA gene targets. Integration of small RNA sequencing data with mRNA sequencing results identified correlated changes in miRNA and target expression. Upregulated miRNAs were associated with decreased proliferation (miR-98-3p and miR-381-3p) and cellular adhesion (miR-29a-3p, miR-429-3p and miR3535), while downregulated miRNAs were connected to upregulation of apoptosis (Let-7d-5p and miR-130b-5p) and metabolism (miR-674-3p and miR-185-5p). Overall, these findings suggest that alcohol and burn injury significantly alters the mRNA and miRNA expression profile of IECs and reveals numerous miRNA-mRNA interactions that regulate critical pathways for gut barrier function after alcohol and burn injury.
Nonlinear dynamical systems often have multiple stable states and thus can harbor coexisting and hidden attractors that may pose an inconvenience or even hazard in practical applications. Amplitude ...control provides one method to detect these coexisting attractors, and it explains the unpredictable and irreproducible behavior that sometimes occurs in carefully engineered systems. In this paper, two regimes of amplitude control are described to illustrate the method for detecting multistability and possible coexisting or hidden attractors.
Abstract
We explore methods for robust estimation of the 21 cm signal from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). A Kernel Density Estimator (KDE) is introduced for measuring the spatial temperature ...fluctuation power spectrum from the EoR. The KDE estimates the underlying probability distribution function of fluctuations as a function of spatial scale, and contains different systematic biases and errors to the typical approach to estimating the fluctuation power spectrum. Extraction of histograms of visibilities allows moments analysis to be used to discriminate foregrounds from 21 cm signal and thermal noise. We use the information available in the histograms, along with the statistical dis-similarity of foregrounds from two independent observing fields, to robustly separate foregrounds from cosmological signal, while making no assumptions about the Gaussianity of the signal. Using two independent observing fields to robustly discriminate signal from foregrounds is crucial for the analysis presented in this paper. We apply the techniques to 13 h of Murchison Widefield Array EoR data over two observing fields. We compare the output to that obtained with a comparative power spectrum estimation method, and demonstrate the reduced foreground contamination using this approach. Using the second moment obtained directly from the KDE distribution functions yields a factor of 2–3 improvement in power for k < 0.3 h Mpc−1 compared with a matched delay space power estimator, while weighting data by additional statistics does not offer significant improvement beyond that available for thermal noise-only weights.
Carbon nanotube reinforced aluminum matrix (CNT/Al) composites with various microstructures were fabricated by powder metallurgy via introducing nano-sized and micron-sized Ti powders into the CNT-Al ...system. The size-dependent effects of Ti powders on the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties were further investigated. The results reveal that the best enhancement (∼51% of UTS) was obtained by adding 80 nm sized Ti powders into the CNT/Al composite compared with the composite without Ti addition, which mainly derives from the synergistic strengthening of the homogenously dispersed CNTs, a large quantity of in-situ formed nano-sized TiAl3 particles and fine grains. Meanwhile, it is also noted that the addition of micron-sized Ti powders can help the CNT dispersion in powder fabrication stage, and subsequently in-situ formed core-shell structured particles with different interface reaction degree in the Al matrix. Among them, 1 μm was determined to be the optimal size of Ti for the maximum formation of core-shell structured particles, which best exploits the load transfer ability of TiAl3 shell layers at their interfaces, and finally attributes to significant strength enhancement (∼35% of UTS). This research provides a valuable reference concerning the size effects of addition metal in future fabrication of CNTs reinforced metal matrix composites with alternative microstructure.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) wild relatives remain a largely untapped potential for genetic improvement. However, the domestication syndrome phenomena from wild species to cultivated cassava ...remain poorly understood. The analysis of leaf anatomy and photosynthetic activity showed significantly different between cassava cultivars SC205, SC8 and wild relative M. esculenta ssp. Flabellifolia (W14). The dry matter, starch and amylose contents in the storage roots of cassava cultivars were significantly more than that in wild species. In order to further reveal the differences in photosynthesis and starch accumulation of cultivars and wild species, the globally differential proteins between cassava SC205, SC8 and W14 were analyzed using 2-DE in combination with MALDI-TOF tandem mass spectrometry. A total of 175 and 304 proteins in leaves and storage roots were identified, respectively. Of these, 122 and 127 common proteins in leaves and storage roots were detected in SC205, SC8 and W14, respectively. There were 11, 2 and 2 unique proteins in leaves, as well as 58, 9 and 12 unique proteins in storage roots for W14, SC205 and SC8, respectively, indicating proteomic changes in leaves and storage roots between cultivated cassava and its wild relatives. These proteins and their differential regulation across plants of contrasting leaf morphology, leaf anatomy pattern and photosynthetic related parameters and starch content could contribute to the footprinting of cassava domestication syndrome. We conclude that these global protein data would be of great value to detect the key gene groups related to cassava selection in the domestication syndrome phenomena.

We report the analysis of the first resolved caustic-crossing binary-source microlensing event OGLE-2016-BLG-1003. The event is densely covered by round-the-clock observations of three surveys. The ...light curve is characterized by two nested caustic-crossing features, which is unusual for typical caustic-crossing perturbations. From the modeling of the light curve, we find that the anomaly is produced by a binary source passing over a caustic formed by a binary lens. The result proves the importance of high-cadence and continuous observations, and the capability of second-generation microlensing experiments to identify such complex perturbations that are previously unknown. However, the result also raises the issues of the limitations of current analysis techniques for understanding lens systems beyond two masses and of determining the appropriate multiband observing strategy of survey experiments.
Resident macrophages densely populate the normal arterial wall, yet their origins and the mechanisms that sustain them are poorly understood. Here we use gene-expression profiling to show that ...arterial macrophages constitute a distinct population among macrophages. Using multiple fate-mapping approaches, we show that arterial macrophages arise embryonically from CX3CR1(+) precursors and postnatally from bone marrow-derived monocytes that colonize the tissue immediately after birth. In adulthood, proliferation (rather than monocyte recruitment) sustains arterial macrophages in the steady state and after severe depletion following sepsis. After infection, arterial macrophages return rapidly to functional homeostasis. Finally, survival of resident arterial macrophages depends on a CX3CR1-CX3CL1 axis within the vascular niche.

To compare thermography with ultrasonography and clinical joint assessment in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Thermography and ultrasonography (power Doppler (PD) and grey-scale (GS) joint ...inflammation scored semi-quantitatively 0–3) were performed sequentially on both hands of 37 RA patients. Using generalised estimating equations analysis, (a) thermographic parameters (TP) were compared between joints based on their PD and GS joint inflammation positivity/negativity status, while (b) TP and ultrasound-detected joint inflammation were compared between joints categorised by their clinical swelling/tenderness status.
Comparing PD positive versus negative joints, the differences in mean values (95% CI) for TP including maximum (Tmax), minimum (Tmin), average (Tavg), and Tmax minus Tmin (Tmax–min) temperatures (in °C) were 1.37 (0.86, 1.87), 0.91 (0.46, 1.36), 1.16 (0.67, 1.64), and 0.46 (0.28, 0.64), respectively. Comparing GS positive versus negative joints, the corresponding results for thermography were 1.09 (0.67, 1.52), 0.66 (0.32, 1.00), 0.86 (0.47, 1.26), and 0.45 (0.28, 0.62), respectively. p-Values were all <0.001. The differences in mean values (95% CI) for ultrasound scores, but not for TP, were statistically significant for (a) swollen tender joints (PD: 0.67 0.39, 0.96, p<0.001; GS: 0.86 0.54, 1.18, p<0.001) and (b) swollen non-tender joints (PD: 0.46 0.07, 0.84, p=0.021; GS: 0.83 0.37, 1.29, p<0.001) when compared to non-swollen non-tender joints.
Joints in RA patients have significantly higher temperature readings when ultrasound-detected joint inflammation is present. Swollen tender/non-tender joints exhibited a greater degree of ultrasound-detected joint inflammation than non-swollen non-tender joints, although their temperature readings were not significantly higher.
•Thermal imaging is safe, non-invasive with high feasibility for use.•RA joints have higher temperature readings in presence of ultrasound inflammation.•Further validation work in areas of potential clinical use is required.
