Cryptocurrency is a relatively new combination of cryptology and currency in financial areas and is increasingly frequently used worldwide. Blockchain applications are expected to reshape the ...renewable energy market. However, there is a lack of studies covering the power usage of digital currencies. Therefore, this study ran experiments on mining efficiency of nine kinds of cryptocurrencies and ten algorithms. A comparison of statistical analysis of data in a benchmark and experiment results of Monero mining was conducted. Thereafter, this study provided an estimation of global electricity consumption of the Monero mining activity. The results indicated that the hashing algorithm mainly determines the mining efficiency. Data analysis and experiments and estimated Monero mining electricity consumption in the world and its carbon emission in China as a case study. In 2018, Monero mining may consume 645.62 GWh of electricity in the world after its hard fork. The Monero mining in China may consume 30.34 GWh and contribute a carbon emission of 19.12–19.42 thousand tons from April to December in 2018. Although cryptocurrency mining and blockchain technology are promising, their influence on energy conversation and sustainable development should be further studied.

All existing thermal comfort standards are applicable to naturally ventilated buildings and air-conditioned buildings, except mixed-mode buildings. Split air-conditioned buildings, as a type of ...mixed-mode buildings, account for a large proportion of current buildings. It is urgent to explore the applicability of thermal comfort standards and determine the energy saving potential in split air-conditioned buildings. In this research, the authors conducted a field study in Changsha, China. Eleven split air-conditioned office buildings were investigated from July to September 2016. 442 valid data sets were obtained. The results indicated that occupants preferred a “cooler” temperature of 26 °C, 0.6°Clower than neutral temperature of 26.7 °C. Occupants have adapted to thermal environment and accepted higher temperature than that predicted by PPD. 95% of occupants were satisfied with the thermal environment. Compared to PMV model, the adaptive model was more applicable to split air-conditioned buildings. 8.6% of cooling energy could be conserved during summer in split air-conditioned buildings.

Swarm intelligence algorithm has attracted a lot of interest since its development, which has been proven to be effective in many application areas. In this study, an enhanced integrated learning ...technique of improved particle swarm optimization and BPNN (Back Propagation Neural Network) is proposed. First, the theory of good point sets is used to create a particle swarm with a uniform initial spatial distribution. So a good point set adaptive particle swarm optimization (GPSAPSO) algorithm was created by using a multi-population co-evolution approach and introducing a function that dynamically changes the inertia weights with the number of iterations. Sixteen benchmark functions were used to confirm the efficacy of the algorithm. Secondly, a parallel integrated approach combining the GPSAPSO algorithm and the BPNN was developed and utilized to build a water quality prediction model. Finally, four sets of cross-sectional data of the Huai River in Bengbu, Anhui Province, China, were used as simulation data for experiments. The experimental results show that the GPSAPSO-BPNN algorithm has obvious advantages compared with TTPSO-BPNN, NSABC-BPNN, IGSO-BPNN and CRBA-BPNN algorithms, which improves the accuracy of water quality prediction results and provides a scientific basis for water quality monitoring and management.
In this paper, we investigate the problem of sparse array design for the direction of the arrival (DOA) of non-Gaussian signals and exploit the unfolded coprime linear array with three subarrays ...(UCLATS) to obtain physical sensors location. With the motivation from the large consecutive degree of freedom (DOF), we optimize the process of obtaining physical sensors location from two steps. Specifically, the first is to model the process of obtaining the longest consecutive virtual sum co-array from a given number of physical array elements into a global postage-stamp problem (GPSP), whose solution can be employed to determine the locations of the longest possible consecutive sum co-array (2-SC) and initial physical array. The second step is to multiply the location of the virtual sum co-array by appropriate coprime coefficients to generate UCLATS and then multiply the initial physical array position by the same corresponding coefficients to obtain physical sensors location. Besides, an algorithm is proposed to obtain DOA estimates, which employs the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) method and partial spectrum searching multiple signal classification (PSS-MUSIC) algorithm to obtain initial estimates and fine estimates, respectively, termed as the DFT-MUSIC method. Compared with the traditional total spectrum searching MUSIC (TSS-MUSIC) algorithm, the DFT-MUSIC method performs the same asymptotical performance of DOA estimation with less than 10% complex multiplication times, which can be verified by numerical simulations under the same condition.
Gas-liquid flow in the dissolved air flotation (DAF) tank was studied through computational fluid dynamics through the realizable k-ε model and the population balance model (PBM) to predict the gas ...content of different flotation mediums (air, carbon dioxide, and chlorine) at different heights of the separation zone in the DAF tank. Simultaneously, a particular focus was placed on studying the effects of bubble aggregation and breakage on gas content. The results indicated that there were virtually no bubbles present in the region below 0.1 m of the separation zone. The gas content in the separation zone could meet the needs for gas content in the DAF tank when all these three gases were adopted as flotation medium. The introduction of models for bubble aggregation and breakage resulted in lower gas content at the bottom of the separation zone and higher gas content at the top, aligning more closely with experimental data. Due to the structural similarity and similar physicochemical characteristics of carbon dioxide and water molecules, the impact of bubble aggregation and breakage on the gas content is minimal.
Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation contribute significantly to the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy. Fenofibrate has received great attention as it benefits diabetic patients ...by reducing retinal laser requirement. Nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a master regulator of anti-oxidative defense. Activation of nucleotide binding domain, leucine-rich repeat-containing receptor (NLR), pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome plays a pivotal role in neuroinflammation. The purpose of this study is to determine whether fenofibrate protects retinas from oxidative damage and neuroinflammation via modulating the Nrf2 pathway and blocking NLRP3 inflammasome activation during diabetes. Diabetes is induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin in mice. Fenofibrate was given to mice in rodent chow. Upregulation of Nrf2 and NLRP3 inflammasome, enhanced ROS formation, and increased leukostasis and vascular leakage were observed in diabetic mouse retinas. Notably, Nrf2 and Caspase-1 were mainly colocalized with glutamine synthetase, one of the Mȕller cell markers. Fenofibrate further increased the expression of Nrf2 and its target gene NQO-1 and HO-1 and reduced ROS formation in diabetic retinas. In addition, retinal expression of NLRP3, Caspase-1 p20, IL-1β p17, and ICAM-1 were dramatically increased in vehicle-treated diabetic mice, which were abolished by fenofibrate intervention. Moreover, fenofibrate treatment also attenuated diabetes-induced retinal leukostasis and vascular leakage in mice. Taken together, fenofibrate attenuates oxidative stress and neuroinflammation in diabetic retinas, which is at least partially through modulating Nrf2 expression and NLRP3 inflammasome activation.
SUMMARY
Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are efficient mechanisms for transporting atmospheric moisture from low latitudes to the Antarctic continent. AR events induce intense snowfall episodes, which ...increase crustal deformation. Here, we used an AR detection algorithm, via a spatial matrix operation to quantify the contribution of AR-induced snowfall in the Antarctic continent, 2010–2019. Our results reveal that the AR snowfall contribution to Antarctica primarily ranged from 9.28 to 29.73 per cent from 2010 to 2019, and there was an evident increasing trend from 2015 to 2019 (20.66 per cent in 2015 to 29.30 per cent in 2019). AR-induced snowfall is one of the factors influencing the surface deformation of the Antarctic continent, based on the hourly AR snowfall deformation calculations for the Antarctic continent, both the average and maximum crustal deformation or displacement tends to be greatest near the coastline, while the displacement is less affected by AR further inland.
Small and micro enterprises play a very important role in economic growth, technological innovation, employment and social stability etc. Due to the lack of credible financial statements and reliable ...business records of small and micro enterprises, they are facing financing difficulties, which has become an important factor hindering the development of small and micro enterprises. Therefore, a credit risk measurement model based on the integrated algorithm of improved GSO (Glowworm Swarm Optimization) and ELM (Extreme Learning Machine) is proposed in this paper. First of all, according to the growth and development characteristics of small and micro enterprises in the big data environment, the formation mechanism of credit risk of small and micro enterprises is analyzed from the perspective of granularity scaling, cross-border association and global view driven by big data, and the index system of credit comprehensive measurement is established by summarizing and analyzing the factors that affect the credit evaluation index. Secondly, a new algorithm based on the parallel integration of the good point set adaptive glowworm swarm optimization algorithm and the Extreme learning machine is built. Finally, the integrated algorithm based on improved GSO and ELM is applied to the credit risk measurement modeling of small and micro enterprises, and some sample data of small and micro enterprises in China are collected, and simulation experiments are carried out with the help of MATLAB software tools. The experimental results show that the model is effective, feasible, and accurate. The research results of this paper provide a reference for solving the credit risk measurement problem of small and micro enterprises and also lay a solid foundation for the theoretical research of credit risk management.
This paper considers the speculative behavior of coal mining enterprises and regulatory authorities, and uses evolutionary game theory to study safety supervision in production process of coal mine. ...It describes the game strategies of coal mining enterprises and regulatory authorities as safety production investment and safety supervision investment respectively. The four game scenarios are defined based on the different speculations of the two parties. The evolutionary game model is established and solved. The evolutionary game analysis is performed, and the conditions that the system evolves to four stable points are obtained. The numerical simulations are used to further analyze the influence of the parameters. The results show that when the parameters meet different conditions, the system evolves to four different stable points. The smaller the number of individuals in the regulatory authorities who choose speculative strategy, the more favorable it is for coal mining enterprises to make normal investment. The more underestimated the supervision power of the regulatory authorities, the more inclined the coal mining enterprises are to adopt speculative strategies. The higher the regulatory authorities' assessment of the safety investment of coal mining enterprises, the more inclined regulatory authorities are to adopt speculative strategies.
Inflammation plays an important role in diabetes-induced retinal vascular leakage. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and the signaling pathway of ...ER stress-induced activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) in the regulation of Müller cell-derived inflammatory mediators in diabetic retinopathy. In diabetic animals, elevated ER stress markers, ATF4, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression were partially localized to Müller cells in the retina. In cultured Müller cells, high glucose induced a time-dependent increase of ER stress, ATF4 expression, and inflammatory factor production. Inducing ER stress or overexpressing ATF4 resulted in elevated intracellular adhesion molecule 1 and VEGF proteins in Müller cells. In contrast, alleviation of ER stress or blockade of ATF4 activity attenuated inflammatory gene expression induced by high glucose or hypoxia. Furthermore, we found that ATF4 regulated the c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase pathway resulting in VEGF upregulation. ATF4 was also required for ER stress-induced and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α activation. Finally, we showed that administration of chemical chaperone 4-phenylbutyrate or genetic inhibition of ATF4 successfully attenuated retinal VEGF expression and reduced vascular leakage in mice with STZ-induced diabetes. Taken together, our data indicate that ER stress and ATF4 play a critical role in retinal inflammatory signaling and Müller cell-derived inflammatory cytokine production in diabetes.
