Aims
A dose–response meta‐analysis was carried out between Parkinson's disease (PD) risk, and coffee, tea and caffeine consumption.
Methods
A comprehensive search was carried out to identify eligible ...studies. The fixed or random effect model was used based on heterogeneity test. The dose–response relationship was assessed by restricted cubic spline.
Results
A total of 13 articles involving 901 764 participants for coffee, eight articles involving 344 895 participants for tea and seven articles involving 492 724 participants for caffeine were included. A non‐linear relationship was found between coffee consumption and PD risk overall, and the strength of protection reached the maximum at approximately 3 cups/day (smoking‐adjusted relative risk: 0.72, 95% confidence interval 0.65–0.81). A linear relationship was found between tea and caffeine consumption, and PD risk overall, and the smoking‐adjusted risk of PD decreased by 26% and 17% for every two cups/day and 200 mg/day increments, respectively. The association of coffee and tea consumption with PD risk was stronger for men than that for women, and the association of caffeine consumption with PD risk was stronger for ever users of hormones than that for never users of hormones among postmenopausal women. The aforementioned associations were weaker for USA relative to Europe or Asia.
Conclusions
A linear dose‐relationship for decreased PD risk with tea and caffeine consumption was found, whereas the strength of protection reached a maximum at approximately 3 cups/day for coffee consumption overall. Abstract
The responses of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) to the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) have been the subject of extensive investigation. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether the ISM ...can serve as a predictor for the EASM. Here, on the basis of both observations and a large-ensemble climate model experiment, we show that the subseasonal variability of abnormal diabatic heating over India enhances precipitation over central East China, the Korean Peninsula, and southern Japan in June. ISM heating triggers Rossby wave propagation along the subtropical jet, promoting southerly winds over East Asia. The southerly winds helps steer anomalous mid-tropospheric warm advection and lower-tropospheric moisture advection toward East Asia, providing conditions preferential for rainband formation. Cluster analysis shows that, depending on jet structures, ISM heating can serve as a trigger as well as a reinforcer of the rainband.
Abstract
Background
Studies had shown that social integration was related to the utilization of medical services. Few studies investigated the relationship between social integration and medical ...returns among the elderly. None research had ever clarified the effect of social integration on medical returns among the migrant elderly following children (MEFC) to new cities. This study aimed to explore the association between social integration and medical returns among the MEFC in Jinan, China.
Method
This cross-sectional study included 627 MEFC in Jinan China. Social integration was evaluated by economic integration, acculturation, and identification. Medical return was assessed by asking the subjects whether go back to hometown to use the medical services when ill. Chi-squared test and multivariable logistic regression were applied to analyze the association between social integration and medical returns of the MEFC.
Results and discussion
It was found that 20.3% of the MEFC had a medical return. As for social integration, those who had not joined local medical insurance (OR = 3.561, 95% CI 1.577–8.039,
p
= 0.002) and were unwilling to stay for a long time (OR = 2.600, 95% CI 1.620–4.174,
p
= 0.001) were more likely to have a medical return. Furthermore, our findings showed that the MEFC who were accompanied by one or more (OR = 1.568, 95% CI 1.027–2.392,
p
= 0.037) were more likely to have a medical return than those who migrated alone.
Conclusion
Negative relationship between social integration and medical returns was found among the MEFC, which means the better social integration of the MEFC would generally have fewer medical return, as well as the better refunding connections of the medical insurance between the current residence and hometown.

ObjectivesAs the fast population ageing in the past few decades, China has also witnessed an increase in the number of migrant elderly following children (MEFC). This study aims to examine the ...relationship between MEFC’s social support, smartphone usage and loneliness in Jinan, China.DesignCross-sectional survey.SettingShandong Province, China.ParticipantsThe participants were 656 MEFC aged 60 years or above.Primary and secondary outcome measuresLoneliness was measured by an eight-item version of the University of California Los Angeles Loneliness Scale (ULS-8). A t-test and one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were conducted to compare the level of loneliness across different sociodemographic variables, social support indicators and smartphone usage indicators. Structural equation modelling was used to validate the association between the above variables.ResultsThe MEFC’s mean score on the ULS-8 was 12.82±4.05, indicating a relatively lower level of loneliness. It was found that social support and smartphone usage exerted negative effects on loneliness of the MEFC, and the standardised direct effects were −0.165 (95% CI −0.257 to −0.070) and −0.094 (95% CI −0.180 to −0.003), respectively. Social support was found to be positively associated with smartphone usage of the MEFC, and the standardised direct effect was 0.147 (95% CI 0.052 to 0.246).ConclusionsThe loneliness of the MEFC was relatively low and was clarified to be negatively associated with social support and smartphone usage. Effective intervention measures on social support and smartphone usage to alleviate loneliness among the MEFC in China were recommended based on this study.

A stable and motivated CDC workforce is critical for Chinese public health system improvement in the post-pandemic period of COVID-19. Meanwhile, the lack of career development prospects, low income, ...low status and the widespread and increasingly serious job burnout of employees CDC staff is a complex and difficult problem for the government. Therefore, this study explored the relationship between CDC personnel subjective socioeconomic status and turnover intention using a sample of 2,502 grass-roots CDC personnel who were administered with a subjective socioeconomic status scale, turnover intention scale, job burnout scale, and payment questionnaire. The results showed that: (1) subjective socioeconomic status had a significant association with job burnout and turnover intention; (2) all three dimensions of job burnout played a mediating role in the relationship between subjective socioeconomic status and turnover intention; (3) expected salary change played a moderating role between subjective socioeconomic status and turnover intention. The effect was stronger for workers with low expected salary change, which means due to the multidimensional comparative and complex mechanism of salary change, which had limited effect on turnover intention. These findings provide a basis for the relationship between turnover intention and socioeconomic status of grass-roots CDC personnel, and also provide ideas for reducing job burnout and staff turnover.
Preventive therapy of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is an important component of tuberculosis (TB) control. Research on acceptance of TB preventive therapy (TPT) is an important topic. Current ...studies focus on acceptability and compliance. However, it is unclear whether LTBI patients will start TPT after accepting treatment. The study assessed the factors associated with TPT refusal after initial willingness to accept treatment.
Data were derived from a baseline survey of prospective study of LTBI treatment among college students in Shandong Province, China. A total of 723 students initially willing to accept TPT were included in the analysis. Stepwise logistic regression was used to explore the individual- and family-level characteristic variables that factors associated with TPT refusal after initial willingness to accept treatment.
Of the 723 LTBI college students who initially had acceptance willingness, 436 (60.3%) finally refused TPT. At the individual level, non-medical students were more likely to refuse TPT odds ratio (OR) = 4.87, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.10-7.67), as were students with moderate physical activity (OR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.04-2.04). Students with boarding experience (OR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.31-0.78) and a high level of knowledge about TB (OR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.95-0.99) were less likely to refuse TPT. At the family level, those with high father's educational level (OR = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.07-2.10) or high household income (OR = 1.80, 95% CI: 1.20-2.71) were more likely to refuse TPT after initially accepting treatment.
Factors associated with TPT refusal after initial willingness to accept treatment, such as personal (type of students, physical activity, boarding experiences, knowledge of TB) and family characteristics (father's education level, household income) among college student with LTBI, might help identify persons for whom tailored interventions could improve the start of LTBI treatment.

In the past decade, hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) has posed a serious threat to childhood health in China; however, no epidemiological data from large HFMD epidemics have been described since ...2013. In the present study, we described the epidemiological patterns of HFMD in Shandong province during 2009-2016 from a large number of symptomatic cases (n = 839,483), including >370,000 HFMD cases since 2013. Our results revealed that HFMD activity has remained at a high level and continued to cause annual epidemics in Shandong province from 2013 onwards. Although the incidence rate was significantly higher in urban areas than in rural areas, no significantly higher case-severity and case-fatality rates were found in urban areas. Furthermore, the seventeen cities of Shandong province could be classified into three distinct epidemiological groups according to the different peak times from southwest (inland) to northeast (coastal) regions. Notably, a replacement of the predominant HFMD circulating agent was seen and non-EVA71/Coxsackievirus A16 enteroviruses became dominant in 2013 and 2015, causing approximately 30% of the severe cases. Our study sheds light on the latest epidemiological characteristics of HFMD in Shandong province and should prove helpful for the prevention and control of the disease in Shandong and elsewhere.
BackgroundTo curb the spread of COVID-19, most countries have adopted measures such as banning shore leave at ports and placed restrictions on crew change. Seafarers may bear an excess pressure ...during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors associated with depression symptoms among Chinese seafarers during the COVID-19 pandemic.DesignCross-sectional study.MethodsThis field survey-based study was conducted at Rongcheng Port, Shandong Province, China, from 10 June 2020 to 25 July 2020. Sociodemographic and occupational characteristics and health-related behaviours were collected through a face-to-face questionnaire. The Self-Rating Depression Scale was used to evaluate depression status during the preceding week. Logistic regression models were used to explore factors related to depression.Results441 male Chinese seafarers were enrolled. Overall, the proportions of seafarers with low, moderate and severe depression symptoms were 23.35%, 9.30% and 9.07%, respectively. Compared with those with good self-rated health (SRH), seafarers with poor SRH had higher odds of depression (OR, 2.24, 95% CI 1.22 to 4.11). Less leisure time or physical exercise was associated with more severe self-reported depression symptoms (1–3 per week vs ≥4 per week: OR, 1.72, 95% CI 0.71 to 4.14; none vs ≥4 per week: OR, 3.93, 95% CI 1.67 to 9.26). Poor sleep quality was associated with higher likelihood of reporting severe depression (fair vs good: OR, 2.78, 95% CI 1.54 to 5.01; poor vs good: OR, 4.30, 95% CI 1.65 to 11.24). The more frequent seafarers worked overtime a week, the higher the likelihood of reporting severe depression symptoms (1–2 per week vs none: OR, 1.82, 95% CI 1.04 to 3.18; ≥3 per week vs none: OR, 2.49, 95% CI 1.05 to 5.92). Also, high perceived work stress was linked to higher odds of being depressed (intermediate vs low: OR, 2.06, 95% CI 0.78 to 5.46; high vs low: OR, 3.83, 95% CI 1.35 to 10.90).ConclusionsThere is a high burden of depression associated with COVID-19 among seafarers. Special interventions that protect the mental health of seafarers are more critical than ever in the context of the pandemic.
Together with rapid Arctic warming and sea ice decline, especially over the Barents–Kara seas (BKS), extreme cold winters have occurred frequently in mid-latitudes, particularly in Central Eurasia. A ...pattern with two distinct winter temperature anomalies centered over the BKS and Central Eurasia is known as the Warm Arctic–Cold Eurasia (WACE) pattern. The impacts of sea ice loss over the BKS and internal atmospheric variability on past WACE formation remain under discussion mainly due to the large internal atmospheric variability in the mid-latitudes. This study analyzed a large-ensemble historical experiment prescribing observed sea ice condition to investigate the role of internal atmospheric variability in the observed interannual variation of the WACE pattern. Comparison of ensemble members suggests that internal atmospheric variability is important for regulating the magnitude of the WACE pattern. Besides the strong effect of local sea ice loss, winter temperature over the BKS increases due to warm advection driven by the Ural blocking and positive phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation. A decrease in winter temperature over Central Eurasia is mainly attributable to the cold advection enhanced by Ural blocking rather than the remote effect of sea ice decline over the BKS. Our study reveals the importance of internal atmospheric variability in elucidating the observed interannual variation of the WACE pattern.
