Two Dy-Mn polymers, {Dy(L1)3Mn(1.5)(H2O)33.125H2O}n (1, L1 = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid) and {Dy(L2)3Mn(1.5)(H2O)68.25H2O}n (2, L2 = 4-hydroxylpyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid), with high symmetry ...(S6) have been prepared. Polymer 1 has a nanoporous 3D framework with channel of about 17.6 A diameter, while 2 has a honeycomb-type 2D structure with the cavity of approximately 14.4 A diameter. In the construction of multidimensional porous polymers with 3d-4f mixed metals, it is the first observation that a ligand substituent effect leads to dramatic differences in the structures formed. Luminescent studies reveal that the emission intensities of 1 and 2 increase significantly upon the addition of Mg2+, whereas the introduction of other metal ions leaves the intensity unchanged or even weakens it; hence, both of them may serve as good candidates of Mg2+ luminescent probes. To our knowledge, complex 1 is also the first example of a 3d-4f metal-based nanoporous polymer to exhibit luminescent selectivity for Mg2+. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal a rather rare ferromagnetic interaction in 2. Thermal gravimetric analyses and powder X-ray diffraction investigations have also been performed, suggestive of high thermal stability of 1.
Dipping product of natural rubber (NR) latex has superior comprehensive properties superior to those made from synthetic latex. Compared with synthetic latex, the component characteristics of NR show ...the existence of non-rubber components (NRC). In this paper, NRC, mainly proteins and phospholipids, are separately removed by enzyme treatment to study their effect on the film formation behavior of natural rubber latex. The changes of NR latex particles are in situ visualize by using freeze-drying SEM technology and AFM during the film formation process. The results demonstrate that contact, deformation, and coalescence of latex particles occur more readily after the removal of proteins and phospholipids. It shows that removing NRC can quicken NR film formation. However, the mechanical properties of the NR film decrease in the absence of NRC. Based on the research, a film formation mechanism for NR latex is proposed, which can provide a more insightful understanding toward the structure-property relationship of NR film.

A potent SARS coronavirus (CoV) 3CL protease inhibitor (TG-0205221, K i = 53 nM) has been developed. TG-0205221 showed remarkable activity against SARS CoV and human coronavirus (HCoV) 229E ...replications by reducing the viral titer by 4.7 log (at 5 μM) for SARS CoV and 5.2 log (at 1.25 μM) for HCoV 229E. The crystal structure of TG-0205221 (resolution = 1.93 Å) has revealed a unique binding mode comprising a covalent bond, hydrogen bonds, and numerous hydrophobic interactions. Structural comparisons between TG-0205221 and a natural peptide substrate were also discussed. This information may be applied toward the design of other 3CL protease inhibitors.
The rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens causes an increasing challenge to public health. Antimicrobial peptides are considered a possible solution to this problem. HBV core protein (HBc) ...contains an arginine-rich domain (ARD) at its C-terminus, which consists of 16 arginine residues separated into four clusters (ARD I to IV). In this study, we demonstrated that the peptide containing the full-length ARD I-IV (HBc147-183) has a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity at micro-molar concentrations, including some MDR and colistin (polymyxin E)-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. Furthermore, confocal fluorescence microscopy and SYTOX Green uptake assay indicated that this peptide killed Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria by membrane permeabilization or DNA binding. In addition, peptide ARD II-IV (HBc153-176) and ARD I-III (HBc147-167) were found to be necessary and sufficient for the activity against P. aeruginosa and K. peumoniae. The antimicrobial activity of HBc ARD peptides can be attenuated by the addition of LPS. HBc ARD peptide was shown to be capable of direct binding to the Lipid A of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in several in vitro binding assays. Peptide ARD I-IV (HBc147-183) had no detectable cytotoxicity in various tissue culture systems and a mouse animal model. In the mouse model by intraperitoneal (i.p.) inoculation with Staphylococcus aureus, timely treatment by i.p. injection with ARD peptide resulted in 100-fold reduction of bacteria load in blood, liver and spleen, as well as 100% protection of inoculated animals from death. If peptide was injected when bacterial load in the blood reached its peak, the protection rate dropped to 40%. Similar results were observed in K. peumoniae using an IVIS imaging system. The finding of anti-microbial HBc ARD is discussed in the context of commensal gut microbiota, development of intrahepatic anti-viral immunity and establishment of chronic infection with HBV. Our current results suggested that HBc ARD could be a new promising antimicrobial peptide.

Objectives
The prognostic significance of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients with central nervous system leukemia (CNSL) at diagnosis is controversial. We aimed to determine the impact of ...CNSL at diagnosis on the clinical outcomes of childhood B-cell ALL in the South China Children’s Leukemia Group (SCCLG).
Methods
A total of 1,872 childhood patients were recruited for the study between October 2016 and July 2021. The diagnosis of CNSL depends on primary cytological examination of cerebrospinal fluid, clinical manifestations, and imaging manifestations. Patients with CNSL at diagnosis received two additional courses of intrathecal triple injections during induction.
Results
The frequency of CNLS at the diagnosis of B-cell ALL was 3.6%. Patients with CNSL at diagnosis had a significantly higher mean presenting leukocyte count (
P
= 0.002) and poorer treatment response (
P <
0.05) compared with non-CNSL patients. Moreover, CNSL status was associated with worse 3-year event-free survival (
P
= 0.030) and a higher risk of 3-year cumulative incidence of relapse
(
P
= 0.008), while no impact was observed on 3-year overall survival (
P
= 0.837). Multivariate analysis revealed that CNSL status at diagnosis was an independent predictor with a higher cumulative incidence of relapse (hazard ratio = 2.809,
P
= 0.016).
Conclusion
CNSL status remains an adverse prognostic factor in childhood B-cell ALL, indicating that additional augmentation of CNS-directed therapy is warranted for patients with CNSL at diagnosis.
Candida glabrata is an important cause of invasive candidiasis. Echinocandins are the first-line treatment of invasive candidiasis caused by C. glabrata. The epidemiological echinocandin sensitivity ...requires long-term surveillance and the understanding about whole genome characteristics of echinocandin non-susceptible isolates was limited. The present study investigated the echinocandin susceptibility of 1650 C. glabrata clinical isolates in China from August 2014 to July 2019. The in vitro activity of micafungin was significantly better than those of caspofungin and anidulafungin (P < 0.001), assessed by MIC.sub.50/90 values. Whole genome sequencing was conducted on non-susceptible isolates and geography-matched susceptible isolates. Thirteen isolates (0.79%) were resistant to at least one echinocandin. Six isolates (0.36%) were solely intermediate to caspofungin. Common evolutionary analysis of echinocandin-resistant and echinocandin-intermediate isolates revealed genes related with reduced caspofungin sensitivity, including previously identified sphinganine hydroxylase encoding gene SUR2. Genome-wide association study identified SNPs at subtelometric regions that were associated with echinocandin non-susceptibility. In-host evolution of echinocandin resistance of serial isolates revealed an enrichment for non-synonymous mutations in adhesins genes and loss of subtelometric regions containing adhesin genes. The echinocandins are highly active against C. glabrata in China with a resistant rate of 0.79%. Echinocandin non-susceptible isolates carried common evolved genes which are related with reduced caspofungin sensitivity. In-host evolution of C. glabrata accompanied intensive changing of adhesins profile.

miR-758-3p plays an important role via regulting ABCA1-mediated cholesterol efflux in atherosclerosis. However, the mechanism of miR-758-5p in cholesterol metabolism is still unclear. Here, we ...revealed that miR-758-5p decreased total cholesterol accumulation in THP-1 macrophage derived foam cells through markedly reducing cholesterol uptake, and no effect on the cholesterol efflux. Interestingly, computational analysis suggests that CD36 may be a target gene of miR-758-5p. Our study further demonstrated that miR-758-5p decreased CD36 expression at both protein and mRNA levels via targeting the CD36 3′UTR in THP-1 macrophage derived foam cells. The present present study concluded that miR-758-5p decreases lipid accumulation of foam cell via regulating CD36-mediated the cholesterol uptake. Therefore, targeting miR-758-5p may offer a promising strategy to treat atherosclerotic vascular disease.

The Mott state in 1T-TaS2 is predicted to host quantum spin liquids (QSLs). However, its insulating mechanism is controversial due to complications from interlayer coupling. Here, we study the charge ...transfer state in monolayer 1T-NbSe2, an electronic analogue to TaS2 exempt from interlayer coupling, using spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy and first-principles calculations. Monolayer NbSe2 surprisingly displays two types of star of David (SD) motifs with different charge transfer gap sizes, which are interconvertible via temperature variation. In addition, bilayer 1T-NbSe2 shows a Mott collapse by interlayer coupling. Our calculation unveils that the two types of SDs possess distinct structural distortions, altering the effective Coulomb energies of the central Nb orbital. Our calculation suggests that the charge transfer gap, the same parameter for determining the QSL regime, is tunable with strain. This finding offers a general strategy for manipulating the charge transfer state in related systems, which may be tuned into the potential QSL regime.
Lung cancer is the most prevalent cancer, and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in China. The aim of this study was to estimate the direct medical expenditure incurred for lung cancer care ...and analyze the trend therein for the period 2002-2011 using nationally representative data in China METHODS: This study was based on 10-year, multicenter retrospective expenditure data collected from hospital records, covering 15,437 lung cancer patients from 13 provinces diagnosed during the period 2002-2011. All expenditure data were adjusted to 2011 to eliminate the effects of inflation using China's annual consumer price index.
The direct medical expenditure for lung cancer care (in 2011) was 39,015 CNY (US$6,041) per case, with an annual growth rate of 7.55% from 2002 to 2011. Drug costs were the highest proportionally in the total medical expenditure (54.27%), followed by treatment expenditure (14.32%) and surgical expenditure (8.10%). Medical expenditures for the disease varied based on region, hospital level, type, and stage.
The medical expenditure for lung cancer care is substantial in China. Drug costs and laboratory test are the main factors increasing medical costs.
•A significant moderated mediation model confirmed form Zhuang adolescents in China.•Peer relationships had a direct impact on science literacy.•Motivation mediated the peer relationships and science ...literacy.•Self-efficacy moderated the path for Zhuang adolescent females.
This study aims to investigate the possible mediating and moderating factors in the relationship between peer relationships and science literacy in ethnic Zhuang adolescents, the largest ethnic minority group in China. Altogether 596 Grade 9 Zhuang students (Nfemale = 293, Mage = 14.74, SD = 1.38) were surveyed and tested with PISA Science (2008). The descriptive and PROCESS analyses have confirmed that motivation acted as a mediator between peer relationships and science literacy, and self-efficacy acted as a moderator. This model indicated that positive peer relationships would cause higher motivation associated with higher science literacy. Besides, self-efficacy could significantly moderate the mediation effect of motivation in females, indicating that more attention should be paid to female Zhuang students to enhance their self-efficacy and, accordingly, science literacy.
