This article sheds light on two enduring English loanwords in European Spanish, very well and yes very well, which have thus far evaded scholarly attention. Despite their long-standing presence and ...widespread use, these Anglicisms have rarely been encountered in written Spanish. This, coupled with their playful and informal nature, may have contributed to their perceived insignificance in academic inquiry. The study scrutinizes nearly a thousand instances of these loanwords from various sources to elucidate their contemporary semantic roles in European Spanish. The analysis reveals that their continued usage over time can be attributed to their versatility and wide-ranging semantic functions. Furthermore, it shows that, precisely because research on English loans has been strongly biased towards the written medium, these are likely to be but two among a number of time-honoured Anglicisms that remain unexplored.
Knowledge of how rhyming slang works has often led scholars and laypeople to assume, without a shred of evidence, that many words of unknown derivation have their origins in this form of slang. Some ...of these assumptions are based on the premise that, if two synonymous words or phrases rhyme, one of them must derive from the other, while others hinge on the supposed existence of a full form whose second element helps unravel the puzzle. This tendency to folk-etymologise by resorting to rhyme is also reflected in many terms resulting from a conflation of a non-rhyming slang word and an underlying rhyme, the former usually being regarded as an elliptical version of the full rhyming slang term, rather than one of its etymons. Drawing on data from a range of primary and secondary sources, this article examines the inner workings of a number of false but widely entertained rhyming slang etymologies and shows how some of the mechanisms that triggered them have long been used in the creation of genuine folk-etymological elaborations.
The world is becoming increasingly dependant in computing intensive applications. The appearance of new paradigms, such as Internet of Things (IoT), and advances in technologies such as Computer ...Vision (CV) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are creating a demand for high-performance applications. In this regard, Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have the ability to provide better performance by allowing a high degree of data parallelism. These devices are also beneficial in specialized fields of manufacturing industry such as CAD/CAM. For all these applications, there is a recent tendency to offload these computations to the Cloud, using a computing offloading Cloud architecture. However, the use of GPUs in the Cloud presents some inefficiencies, where GPU virtualization is still not fully resolved, as our research on what main Cloud providers currently offer in terms of GPU Cloud instances shows. To address these problems, this paper first makes a review of current GPU technologies and programming techniques that increase concurrency, to then propose a Cloud computing outsourcing architecture to make more efficient use of these devices in the Cloud.

Purpose This study investigates how federated learning (FL) and human–robot collaboration (HRC) can be used to manage diverse industrial environments effectively. We aim to demonstrate how these ...technologies not only improve cooperation between humans and robots but also significantly enhance productivity and innovation within industrial settings. Our research proposes a new framework that integrates these advancements, paving the way for smarter and more efficient factories. Design/methodology/approach This paper looks into the difficulties of handling diverse industrial setups and explores how combining FL and HRC in the mark of Industry 5.0 paradigm could help. A literature review is conducted to explore the theoretical insights, methods and applications of these technologies that justify our proposal. Based on this, a conceptual framework is proposed that integrates these technologies to manage heterogeneous industrial environments. Findings The findings drawn from the literature review performed, demonstrate that personalized FL can empower robots to evolve into intelligent collaborators capable of seamlessly aligning their actions and responses with the intricacies of factory environments and the preferences of human workers. This enhanced adaptability results in more efficient, harmonious and context-sensitive collaborations, ultimately enhancing productivity and adaptability in industrial operations. Originality/value This research underscores the innovative potential of personalized FL in reshaping the HRC landscape for manage heterogeneous industrial environments, marking a transformative shift from traditional automation to intelligent collaboration. It lays the foundation for a future where human–robot interactions are not only more efficient but also more harmonious and contextually aware, offering significant value to the industrial sector.
To describe the prevalence and associated factors of inappropriate doses of direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) in a national registry of patients of real clinical practice.
Five hundred and thirty ...outpatients with atrial fibrillation treated with DOAC were included in a prospective, national, multicentre study. The appropriateness of the doses of DOAC was defined according to the recommendations of the European Heart Rhythm Association. Mean age was 73 ± 9 years, with a 46% of women. Two hundred and sixty-seven patients were prescribed dabigatran, 190 rivaroxaban, and 73 apixaban. A total of 172 patients (32%) did not receive the appropriate dose: 93 patients received a lower dose (18%) and 79 patients a higher dose (15%). In the comparisons among the subgroups of inappropriately low, appropriate, and inappropriately high dose, we observed significant trends to older age (69 ± 8 years vs. 73 ± 10 years vs. 77 ± 6 years), more frequent female sex (37% vs. 46% vs. 59%), antiplatelet drugs (5% vs. 8% vs. 25%), rivaroxaban (14% vs. 38% vs. 53%), and apixaban use (5% vs. 15% vs. 19%), higher CHAD2DS2-VASc (3.00 ± 1.38 vs. 3.58 ± 1.67 vs. 4.59 ± 1.44) and HAS-BLED scores (1.83 ± 0.87 vs. 1.92 ± 1.07 vs. 2.47 ± 1.13), lower body mass index (30 ± 6 kg/m2 vs. 29 ± 4 kg/m2 vs. 28 ± 4 kg/m2) and glomerular filtration rate (74 ± 27 mL/min vs. 70 ± 22 mL/min vs. 63 ± 16 mL/min), and lower frequency of dabigatran use (81% vs. 47% vs. 28%) (all comparisons P ≤ 0.01).

We perform a series of optimizations on the convolution operator within the ARM common microcontroller units software interface standard for neural network (CMSIS-NN) library to improve the ...performance of deep learning tasks on Arduino development boards equipped with ARM Cortex-M4 and M7 microcontrollers. To this end, we develop custom microkernels that efficiently handle the internal computations required by the convolution operator via the lowering approach and the direct method, and we design two techniques to avoid register spilling. We also take advantage of all the RAM on the Arduino boards by reusing it as a scratchpad for the convolution filters. The integration of these techniques into CMSIS-NN, when invoked by TensorFlow Lite for microcontrollers for quantised versions of VGG, SqueezeNet, ResNet, and MobileNet-like convolutional neural networks enhances the overall inference speed by a factor ranging from <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">1.13\times </tex-math></inline-formula> to <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">1.50\times </tex-math></inline-formula>.
Forests are important in sequestering CO2 and therefore play a significant role in climate change. However, the CO2 cycle is conditioned by drought events that alter the rate of photosynthesis, which ...is the principal physiological action of plants in transforming CO2 into biological energy. This study applied recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) to describe the evolution of photosynthesis-related indices to highlight disturbance alterations produced by the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO, years 2005 and 2010) and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO, year 2015) in the Amazon forest. The analysis was carried out using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images to build time series of the enhanced vegetation index (EVI), the normalized difference water index (NDWI), and the land surface temperature (LST) covering the period 2001–2018. The results did not show significant variations produced by AMO throughout the study area, while a disruption due to the global warming phase linked to the extreme ENSO event occurred, and the forest was able to recover. In addition, spatial differences in the response of the forest to the ENSO event were found. These findings show that the application of RQA to the time series of vegetation indices supports the evaluation of the forest ecosystem response to disruptive events. This approach provides information on the capacity of the forest to recover after a disruptive event and, therefore is useful to estimate the resilience of this particular ecosystem.
The aim of this study was to investigate the national prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in Spain and its association with various clinical, environmental, and demographic variables.
The study ...included 4554 subjects (42.4% men) with a mean age of 50 years (range 18-93 years), who were participants in a national, cross-sectional, population-based survey conducted in 2009-2010. Data gathered included clinical and demographic characteristics, physical examination, and blood sampling. Thyrotropin, free thyroxine, free triiodothyronine, and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) concentrations were analyzed by electrochemiluminescence. Urinary iodine (UI) levels were measured in an isolated urine sample.
The prevalence of treated hypothyroidism, untreated subclinical hypothyroidism, and untreated clinical hypothyroidism was 4.2% confidence interval (CI) 3.6-4.9%, 4.6% CI 4.0-5.2%, and 0.3% CI 0.1-0.5%, respectively. The prevalence of total hypothyroidism (including all fractions) was 9.1% CI 8.2-10.0%. The prevalence of total hyperthyroidism was 0.8% CI 0.6-1.1. A total of 7.5% CI 6.7-8.3% of the population tested positive for TPOAbs (≥50 IU/mL). In multivariate logistic regression models, TPOAbs were strongly associated with both hypothyroidism (p < 0.001) and hyperthyroidism (p = 0.005), whereas high UI levels (>200 μg/g creatinine) were associated with hypothyroidism (p < 0.001). The positive association between UI and hypothyroidism remained for both treated (p < 0.001) and untreated (p < 0.05) hypothyroidism, whereas it was especially significant for non-autoimmune (TPOAbs negative) forms (p < 0.001). At UI levels ≥200 μg/g, there was a positive correlation between UI and thyrotropin levels (β = 0.152, p < 0.001) and a negative correlation between UI and free triiodothyronine levels (β = -0.134, p = 0.001).
According to the data, a large proportion (10%) of the Spanish population has some evidence of thyroid dysfunction. High TPOAb concentrations were associated with both hypo- and hyperthyroidism, whereas high UI concentrations were associated with hypothyroidism.
