This article reports 7 studies showing that God primes inhibit self-concept accessibility. Study 1A provided the first supportive evidence using undergraduate samples. Study 1B replicated the ...findings using working adult participants. Study 2A to 2C showed that the inhibitory effect of the God concept on implicit self-concepts was not due to concepts related to love, power, hope, religion, devil, and father. Study 3 found the same inhibitory effect when the God prime was subliminally presented. Study 4 showed that God concept priming influenced implicit self-representations, but not other types of implicit representations. Finally, a meta-analysis of our findings reveal a large effect of priming. In addition, the effect was consistent across different religious affiliations. These findings provide evidence at the social-cognitive level that activation of God concepts can induce lower self-orientation: a possible mechanism for religious self-transcendence.

Superoxide, nitric oxide (NO), and peroxynitrite are important mediators in the pathogenesis of ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. We tested the renoprotective effects of allopurinol (ALP), a ...xanthine oxidase inhibitor, N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (N-methyl-4-pyridyl) porphyrinato iron (III) (FeTMPyP) by selective inhibition of superoxide, NO, and peroxynitrite, respectively.
Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to 5 groups (n = 6 per group). Group 1 was a sham-operated group. Group 2 was the renal I/R group (30-minute ischemia followed by 24-hour reperfusion). Rats in groups 3, 4, and 5 received ALP, L-NAME, or FeTMPyP, respectively, at 5 minutes before the reperfusion. Serum creatinine (Cr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), renal tissue malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, histological changes, apoptosis, and monocyte infiltration were evaluated. In addition, the combined treatment with ALP and L-NAME was compared with FeTMPyP in a second independent experiment.
The administration of ALP, L-NAME, and FeTMPyP diminished the increase in Cr (P = .0066 for all) and BUN (P = .0066 for ALP; and P = .013 for L-NAME) induced by I/R injury and decreased the histological damage (P = .0066 for all). In addition, ALP, L-NAME, and FeTMPyP attenuated the oxidative stress response as determined by a decrease in malondialdehyde level (P = .0066 for all), apoptotic renal tubular cells (P = .0066 for all), and monocyte infiltration (P = .0066 for all). The combined treatment of ALP and L-NAME decreased Cr and BUN levels to a greater degree than FeTMPyP (P = .016 for Cr; P = .0079 for BUN).
Superoxide, NO, and peroxynitrite are involved in renal I/R injury. The reduction of peroxynitrite formation, via inhibition of superoxide or NO, or the induction of peroxynitrite decomposition may be beneficial in renal I/R injury.
Electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) is applied for the investigation of C2-ceramide complexes with transition metal ions. Ceramide plays an important role in the regulation ...of various signaling pathways leading to proliferation, differentiation or apoptotic cell death. The formation and fragmentation of doubly charged cluster ions as well as singly charged cluster ions of C2-ceramide with transition metal ions (Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+ and Ni2+) are studied by ESI-MS/MS in the positive mode. Tube lens offset voltage and concentrations of C2-ceramide and transition metals are optimized to determine the best conditions for generating doubly charged cluster ions. The fragmentation pathways of metal ion complexes with C2-ceramide and the compositions of these complexes are determined by collision induced dissociation (CID). All transition metal ions (Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+ and Ni2+ except Cu2+) shows similar complexation with C2 ceramide. The unique complexation behavior of copper(II) is responsible for the different geometry of the complexes and relatively lower affinity of ceramide to copper(II) than those to other transition metals.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to propose a deep-learning model for the detection of the mandibular canal on dental panoramic radiographs. Materials and Methods: A total of 2,100 panoramic ...radiographs (PANs) were collected from 3 different machines: RAYSCAN Alpha (n=700, PAN A), OP-100 (n=700, PAN B), and CS8100 (n=700, PAN C). Initially, an oral and maxillofacial radiologist coarsely annotated the mandibular canals. For deep learning analysis, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) utilizing U-Net architecture were employed for automated canal segmentation. Seven independent networks were trained using training sets representing all possible combinations of the 3 groups. These networks were then assessed using a hold-out test dataset. Results: Among the 7 networks evaluated, the network trained with all 3 available groups achieved an average precision of 90.6%, a recall of 87.4%, and a Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 88.9%. The 3 networks trained using each of the 3 possible 2-group combinations also demonstrated reliable performance for mandibular canal segmentation, as follows: 1) PAN A and B exhibited a mean DSC of 87.9%, 2) PAN A and C displayed a mean DSC of 87.8%, and 3) PAN B and C demonstrated a mean DSC of 88.4%. Conclusion: This multi-device study indicated that the examined CNN-based deep learning approach can achieve excellent canal segmentation performance, with a DSC exceeding 88%. Furthermore, the study highlighted the importance of considering the characteristics of panoramic radiographs when developing a robust deep-learning network, rather than depending solely on the size of the dataset.

The ubiquitous perception and interactive properties offered by Internet of Things (IoT) technology enable more active participation of residential users to achieve energy efficiency via various ...demand response (DR) strategies. In this paper, the energy management problem of a smart home consisting of renewable energy source (RES), energy storage system (ESS), a set of schedulable home appliances, and dynamic electricity tariff is formulated. A home energy management system (HEMS) is developed using the mixed integer linear programing (MILP) technique, aiming to solve both load scheduling problem of home appliances and the energy dispatch problem of utility grid under a single optimization framework in real-time. Some elements such as RES and ESS are assumed to be uncontrollable for more realistic modelling. By leveraging the peak shaving and energy storage capability of ESS, the proposed HEMS is able to minimize the energy cost required to satisfy the scheduled load demands without violating the operating constraints of smart home and the convenience level of users.
Extrathyroidal extension (ETE) indicates the invasiveness of primary thyroid tumor into the adjacent tissue, and its importance as a prognostic factor overrides tumor size in classifying the cancer ...stage. The aim of this study was to determine the molecular basis of ETE in papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs).
We systematically defined genes and pathways regulated in ETE using mutation and gene expression profiles from The Cancer Genome Atlas, and examined the effect of BRAF and RAS mutations on ETE. The significance of these genes was further validated using public microarray data.
Genes related to extracellular matrix and immune response were significantly up-regulated in ETE and ion-transport genes were often down-regulated. Differentiation properties and WNT signaling were also found to be altered by ETE. BRAF and RAS mutations were shown to have distinct effects on genes associated with ETE. Specifically, PAX8 and its downstream target WNT4 were differentially expressed according to mutation status in addition to ETE, indicating their critical roles in cell motility.
BRAF V600E mutation predisposes PTC cells toward invasive phenotypes, while RAS mutation confers resistance to ETE. The differential regulation appears to be mediated through WNT4.
Neuropathic pain questionnaires are efficient diagnostic tools for neuropathic pain and play an important role in neuropathic pain epidemiologic studies in China. No comparison data was available in ...regards to the Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (LANSS), the Neuropathic Pain Questionnaire (NPQ) and ID Pain within and among the same population.
To achieve a linguistic adaptation, validation, and comparison of Chinese versions of the 3 neuropathic pain questionnaires (LANSS, NPQ and ID Pain).
A nonrandomized, controlled, prospective, multicenter trial.
Ten pain centers in China.
Two forward translations followed by comparison and reconciliation of the translations. Comparison of the 2 backward translations with the original version was made to establish consistency and accuracy of the translations. Pilot testing and pain specialists' evaluations were also required. A total of 140 patients were enrolled in 10 centers throughout China: 70 neuropathic pain patients and 70 nociceptive pain patients. Reliability (Cronbach's alpha coefficients and Guttman split-half coefficients) and validity (sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, receiver operating characteristic ROC curves and the area under the ROC curves) of the 3 questionnaires were determined. ROC curves and the area under the ROC curves of the 3 questionnaires were also compared.
Chinese versions of LANSS, NPQ and ID Pain had a good reliability (Cronbach's alpha coefficients and Guttman split-half coefficients were greater than 0.7). Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of the Chinese versions of LANSS and ID Pain were considerably high ( > 80%). The area under the ROC curves of LANSS and ID Pain was significantly higher than that of NPQ (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the area under the ROC curves of LANSS and ID Pain (P > 0.05).
The study was based on patients with a high school degree or above, which limited the application of the 3 neuropathic pain questionnaires to patients with lower educational levels.
The Chinese versions of LANSS and ID Pain developed and validated by this study can be used as a diagnostic tool in differentiating neuropathic pain in patients whose native language is Chinese (Mandarin).
The complexes of C2- and C6-dihydroceramides with transition metal ions have been investigated by using
Electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). The formation and fragmentation ...pathways of
several doubly charged cluster ions as well as singly charged cluster ions of C2- and C6-dihydroceramides with
transition metal ions have studied by ESI-MS/MS in the positive mode. Under ESI conditions, dihydroceramides
form singly and doubly charged complexes with transition metal ions (Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+ except
Cu2+) with the compositions of DHCer+M+2H2O-H+, 2DHCer+M+2H2O-H+, 3DHCer+M+2H2O-H+, 2DHCer
+M2+, 3DHCer+M2+, 4DHCer+M2+, 5DHCer+M2+, and 6DHCer+M2+ (DHCer = C2- or C6-dihydroceramide,
M = transition metal ion). The different complexation behavior of copper is responsible for relatively lower
affinity of dihydroceramides to copper compared to those of other transition metals. It is also found that in the mass
spectrum of the dihydroceramide complexes with copper(II), 2DHCer+Cu-H+ was observed with considerable
intensity as well as 2DHCer+Cu+2H2O-H+ due to its different geometry from those of other metals. KCI Citation Count: 2
