Abstract
Background
There are several tools to assess functional and physical status in critical ill patients. These tools can guide rehabilitation strategies in Intensive care units (ICU). However, ...they are not standardized, and this can compromise their applicability. The aim of the study is to identify common contents between International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and Medical Research Council sum score (MRC-ss), Functional Status Score for the ICU (FSS-ICU), and Physical Function in ICU Test-scored (PFIT-s). As well as to propose a new assessment approach based on the ICF to ICU patients.
Methods
Pilot cross-sectional study. ICU in-patients, both genders, aged between 50 and 75 years were assessed with MRC-ss, FSS-ICU, PFIT-s and the linking rules used were proposed by Cieza et al. The inter-rater agreement for the linking process was performed using the Kappa coefficient.
Results
The ICF categories identified in the tools covered a total of 14 items. Common contents were identified in 13 of the 14 and two were related to body functions, six to body structures and five to activities and participation. The inter-rater agreement was considered substantial for the linking of MRC-ss (k = 0.665) and PFIT-s (k = 0.749) to the ICF, and almost perfect for the FSS-ICU (k = 0.832).
Conclusions
This study synthesizes and categorizes commonly used tools and presents a new proposal based on the ICF to guide future studies. The proposed model combines the ICF with the contents of the most relevant instruments used in critical care.

Purpose Although body composition has emerged as an important predictor of drug efficacy and toxicity, explanations for this association are unclear. Our goal was to investigate relationships between ...lean body mass (LBM), liver size/function and epirubicin pharmacokinetics (PK) and toxicity. Methods Data from a clinical study (n = 24) of patients with breast cancer receiving adjuvant intravenous FE₁₀₀C chemotherapy were used to examine relationships between LBM, liver size, and epirubicin clearance. Muscle tissue and liver mass were measured by analysis of computerized tomography cross-sectional images, and an extrapolation of muscle mass to total LBM compartment was employed. Population PK analysis of epirubicin was undertaken to test effects of body composition on epirubicin clearance and area under the curve (AUC). Results Estimated LBM was extremely variable in this cohort ranging from 32.9 to 67.3 kg. LBM was associated with neutrophil nadir (r = 0.5, P = 0.023), and mean LBM was lower for patients presenting with toxicity compared to those where toxicity was absent (41.6 vs. 56.2 kg, P = 0.002); 33% of variance in clearance was explained by LBM and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). Liver mass was not related to epirubicin clearance likely due to larger livers presenting with larger fat content, but liver attenuation (degree of fat infiltration) and AST were associated with AUC. Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine relationships between LBM, liver mass/function and epirubicin PK and toxicity. This exploratory work investigates the notion of organs and tissues having distinctive contributions to the distribution and metabolism of antineoplastic drugs.
Thermal techniques, such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG), derivate of TG curve, differential thermal analysis, and non-thermal techniques such as fourier transform ...infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) were used to evaluate the possible interactions between hydroquinone (HQ) and excipients commonly used in semi-solid pharmaceutical forms. The DSC curve of HQ showed a sharp endothermic event between 173 and 179 °C indicating melting point. No evidence of interaction was observed between HQ and cetyl alcohol (CA), cetostearyl alcohol (CTA), disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate , and decyl oleate. However, based on the thermoanalytical trials, a physical interaction was suspected between HQ and dipropylene glycol (DPG), glycerin (GLY), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), imidazolidinyl urea (IMD), methylparaben (MTP), and propylparaben (PPP). The FTIR results show that for DPG, GLY, HPMC, MTP, and PPP, there were no chemical interactions with HQ at room temperature, but the heating promotes interaction between HQ and HPMC. The FTIR spectra of HQ/IMD show the chemical interaction at room temperature, which was also observed with heating. The XRD results of mixtures between HQ and DPG, HPMC, IMD, MTP, and PPP indicate no interaction between these substances at room temperature, but the heating modifies the HQ crystallinity in these mixtures. All of these methods showed incompatibility between HQ and the excipient IMD.
Socioeconomic factors have exacerbated the impact of COVID-19 worldwide. Brazil, already marked by significant economic inequalities, is one of the most affected countries, with one of the highest ...mortality rates. Understanding how inequality and income segregation contribute to excess mortality by COVID-19 in Brazilian cities is essential for designing public health policies to mitigate the impact of the disease. This paper aims to fill in this gap by analyzing the effect of income inequality and income segregation on COVID-19 mortality in large urban centers in Brazil. We compiled weekly COVID-19 mortality rates from March 2020 to February 2021 in a longitudinal ecological design, aggregating data at the city level for 152 Brazilian cities. Mortality rates from COVID-19 were compared across weeks, cities and states using mixed linear models. We estimated the associations between COVID-19 mortality rates with income inequality and income segregation using mixed negative binomial models including city and week-level random intercepts. We measured income inequality using the Gini index and income segregation using the dissimilarity index using data from the 2010 Brazilian demographic census. We found that 88.2% of COVID-19 mortality rates variability was between weeks, 8.5% between cities, and 3.3% between states. Higher-income inequality and higher-income segregation values were associated with higher COVID-19 mortality rates before and after accounting for all adjustment factors. In our main adjusted model, rate ratios (RR) per 1 SD increases in income inequality and income segregation were associated with 17% (95% CI 9% to 26%) and 11% (95% CI 4% to 19%) higher mortality. Income inequality and income segregation are long-standing hallmarks of large Brazilian cities. Risk factors related to the socioeconomic context affected the course of the pandemic in the country and contributed to high mortality rates. Pre-existing social vulnerabilities were critical factors in the aggravation of COVID-19, as supported by the observed associations in this study.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of 2 subcutaneous injections of a multimineral preparation, each containing 60mg of zinc, 10mg of manganese, 5mg of selenium, and 15mg of copper ...at 3 and 30d after birth on immunity, health, and growth of dairy calves during the preweaning period. The study was conducted in upstate New York in 2 commercial dairy farms. A total of 790 Holstein heifer calves were randomly allocated at birth into 1 of 2 treatments: trace mineral supplement (TMS) treated or control. Blood samples were collected at 3, 14, and 35d after birth to evaluate glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, haptoglobin, and neutrophil and monocyte function. Incidence of diseases and average daily gain was evaluated in the first 50d of life. At 14d of life, TMS-treated calves had increased neutrophil activity compared with control calves. Moreover, TMS-treated calves had greater GPx activity on d 14 after birth than control calves. The TMS treatment reduced the incidence of diarrhea (TMS=41.7% vs. control=49.7%) and combined incidence of pneumonia or otitis or both (TMS=41.7% vs. control=49.1%). Additionally, GPx was greater for calves diagnosed with otitis at d 35 after birth. However, calves diagnosed with pneumonia had decreased GPx activity at d 35 after birth. Serum SOD and haptoglobin concentrations were not affected by treatment or disease. Moreover, no effects were observed on average daily gain and survivability between TMS-treated and control calves during the preweaning period. Supplementation with trace minerals at 3 and 30d of life increased neutrophil function and GPx activity and reduced the incidence of health disorders.
• Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in plants typically suffer from limited statistical power. An alternative to the logistical and cost challenge of increasing sample sizes is to gain power by ...meta-analysis using information from independent studies.
• We carried out GWAS for growth traits with six single-marker models and regional heritability mapping (RHM) in four Eucalyptus breeding populations independently and by Joint-GWAS, using gene and segment-based models, with data for 3373 individuals genotyped with a communal EUChip60KSNP platform.
• While single-single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) GWAS hardly detected significant associations at high-stringency in each population, gene-based Joint-GWAS revealed nine genes significantly associated with tree height. Associations detected using single-SNP GWAS, RHM and Joint-GWAS set-based models explained on average 3–20% of the phenotypic variance. Whole-genome regression, conversely, captured 64–89% of the pedigree-based heritability in all populations. Several associations independently detected for the same SNPs in different populations provided unprecedented GWAS validation results in forest trees. Rare and common associations were discovered in eight genes involved in cell wall biosynthesis and lignification.
• With the increasing adoption of genomic prediction of complex phenotypes using shared SNPs and much larger tree breeding populations, Joint-GWAS approaches should provide increasing power to pinpoint discrete associations potentially useful toward tree breeding and molecular applications.
Fascial dehiscence (FD) occurs in up to 14.9% of high-risk patients undergoing emergency laparotomy. Although prophylactic mesh can prevent FD, its use in emergency operations remains controversial.
...A prospective randomized clinical trial was conducted at the Hospital das Clínicas from Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo in Brazil. It was performed among high-risk patients, defined according to Rotterdam risk model, undergoing midline emergency laparotomy. The patients were randomized into the suture group (SG), with slowly absorbable running sutures placed with a 36-mm-long needle at a suture-to-wound length ratio of 4:1, and the prophylactic mesh group (PMG), with fascial closure as in the SG but reinforced with onlay polypropylene mesh. The primary end point was incidence of FD at 30 days post operation.
We analyzed 115 patients; 52 and 63 were allocated to the SG and PMG, respectively. In all, 77.4% of the cases were for colorectal resection. FD occurred in 7 (13.5%) patients in the SG and none in the PMG (p = 0.003). There was no difference between the groups in number of patients with surgical site occurrence (SSO) or SSO requiring procedural intervention. However, some specific SSOs had higher incidences in the mesh group: surgical site infection (20.6% versus 7.7%; p = 0.05), seroma (19.0% versus 5.8%; p = 0.03), and nonhealing incisional wound (23.8% versus 5.8%; p = 0.008). Of SSOs in the PMG and SG, 92.3% and 73.3%, respectively, resolved spontaneously or with bedside interventions.
Prophylactic onlay mesh reinforcement in emergency laparotomy is safe and prevents FD. Surgical site infection, seroma, and nonhealing incisional wound were more common in the mesh group, but associated with low morbidity within 30 days post operation.

In the New World, although dogs are considered the main parasite reservoir, in the last ...two decades, several studies have confirmed the role of cats (
Felis catus
) in the epidemiology of the disease and feline leishmaniasis (FeL) is now considered to be an emerging disease. The present review summarizes the current knowledge about FeL, focusing on important immunopathological aspects, epidemiology, and diagnostic methods applied for felines in Brazil. Cats are infected with the same species of
Leishmania
found in dogs (i.e.,
Leishmania infantum
). Like dogs, skin lesions are the most common in cats with clinical FeL, mainly affecting the cephalic region and less frequently the legs which may be accompanied by generalized signs or visceral involvement. Information on the immune response of cats to
Leishmania
infection is scarce; however, efficient infection control is seen in most cases. For diagnosis, generally, the same methods as those in dogs are used, mainly serological tools. But there is a lack of studies focusing the performance of these methods for diagnosing FeL. The estimated overall prevalence of FeL in Brazil is 8%, with
L. infantum
being the most prevalent species. However, infections with
Leishmania braziliensis
and
Leishmania amazonensis
have also been reported. In conclusion, although there has been an increase in the publication related to FeL in Brazil in recent years, there is a lack of research relating immune response and diagnosis of these animals. Cats have been shown to be competent hosts for
Leishmania
parasites, and their role in the epidemiology of the disease cannot be underestimated, especially in areas of Brazil where the disease is historically endemic.
This review focuses on chemometric techniques applied in MIR-biospectroscopy for cancer diagnosis and analysis over the last ten years of research. Experimental applications of chemometrics coupled ...with biospectroscopy are discussed throughout this work. The advantages and drawbacks of this association are also highlighted. Chemometric algorithms are evidenced as a powerful tool for cancer diagnosis, classification, and in different matrices. In fact, it is shown how chemometrics can be implemented along all different types of cancer analyses.
This review focuses on chemometric techniques applied in MIR-biospectroscopy for cancer diagnosis and analysis over the last ten years of research.
