Experimental data and results of direct numerical simulations are reviewed in order to show that premixed combustion can change the basic characteristics of a fluctuating velocity field (the ...so-called flame-generated turbulence) and the direction of scalar fluxes (the so-called countergradient or pressure-driven transport) in a turbulent flow. Various approaches to modeling these phenomena are discussed and the lack of a well-elaborated and widely validated predictive approach is emphasized. Relevant basic issues (the transition from gradient to countergradient scalar transport, the role played by flame-generated turbulence in the combustion rate, the characterization of turbulence in premixed flames, etc.) are critically considered and certain widely accepted concepts are disputed. Despite the substantial progress made in understanding the discussed effects over the past decades, these basic issues strongly need further research.
Various experimental and DNS data show that premixed combustion is affected by the differences between the coefficients of molecular transport of fuel, oxidant, and heat not only at weak but also at ...moderate and high turbulence. In particular, turbulent flame speed increases with decreasing the Lewis number of the deficient reactant, the effect being very strong for lean hydrogen mixtures. Various concepts; flame instability, flame stretch, local extinction, leading point, that aim at describing the effects of molecular transport on turbulent flame propagation and structure are critically discussed and the results of relevant studies of perturbed laminar flames (unstable flames, flame balls, flames in vortex tubes) are reviewed. The crucial role played by extremely curved laminar flamelets in the propagation of moderately and highly turbulent flames is highlighted and the relevant physical mechanisms are discussed.
Apparent inconsistency between (i) experimental and direct numerical simulation (DNS) data that show the significant influence of differential diffusion on the turbulent burning rate and (ii) recent ...complex-chemistry DNS data that indicate mitigation of the influence of differential diffusion on conditioned profiles of various local flame characteristics at high Karlovitz numbers, is explored by analysing new DNS data obtained from lean hydrogen–air turbulent flames. Both aforementioned effects are observed by analysing the same DNS data provided that the conditioned profiles are sampled from the entire computational domain. On the contrary, the conditioned profiles sampled at the leading edge of the mean flame brush do not indicate the mitigation, but are significantly affected by differential diffusion phenomena, e.g. because reaction zones are highly curved at the leading edge. This observation is consistent with a significant increase in the computed turbulent burning velocity with decreasing Lewis number, with all the results considered jointly being consonant with the leading point concept of premixed turbulent combustion. The concept is further supported by comparing DNS data obtained by allowing for preferential diffusion solely for a single species, either atomic or molecular hydrogen.
A recent analysis (Lipatnikov et al., 2020) of complex-chemistry direct numerical simulation (DNS) data obtained from lean hydrogen-air flames associated with corrugated-flame (case A), ...thin-reaction-zone (case B), and broken-reaction-zone (case C) regimes of turbulent burning has shown that the flamelet concept (i) can predict mean concentrations of various species in those flames if the probability density function (PDF) for the fuel-based combustion progress variable c is extracted from the DNS data, but (ii) poorly performs for the mean rate W¯c of product creation. These results suggest applying the concept to evaluation of mean species concentration (but not the mean rate) in combination with another closure relation for W¯c whose predictive capabilities are better. This proposal is developed in the present paper whose focus is placed on studying a new flamelet-based presumed PDF P(c) for predictions of mean concentration of radicals in engineering computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applications. Analysis of the DNS data shows that (i) the flamelet PDF performs well at intermediate values of c in cases A and B, but should be truncated at small and large c, (ii) modeling P(c) in the radical recombination zone (i.e., at large c) is of importance for predicting mean concentrations of H,O, and OH. Accordingly, the flamelet PDF is truncated and combined with a uniform P(c) at large c. Moreover, the mean rate W¯c extracted from the DNS data is used to calibrate the PDF (the rate is considered to be given by another model). Assessment of the approach against the DNS data shows that it well predicts mean density, temperature, and concentrations of reactants, product, and the aforementioned radicals in cases A and B. In case C, the approach performs worse for OandOH at large c¯ and moderately underestimates the mean concentration of H in the entire flame brush.

Recently, a transport equation for the mean rate of product creation in a premixed turbulent flame was derived and a joint closure relation for dominant terms in that equation was developed and validated against Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data obtained from weakly turbulent flames. Present communication reports results of further DNS tests of this newly introduced approach, performed using recent data computed under substantially different turbulent conditions. In particular, the ability of the approach to predict significant oscillations of the turbulent burning velocity with time is shown under conditions associated with not only the flamelet but also the thin-reaction-zone regimes of premixed turbulent burning. While such oscillations are documented in the present and other DNS studies, capabilities of other models of premixed turbulent combustion to reproduce this challenging phenomenon have not yet been demonstrated in the literature.

A big database (23 cases characterized by Damköhler number less than unity) created recently in 3D Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of propagation of a statistically one-dimensional and planar, dynamically passive reaction wave in statistically stationary, homogeneous, isotropic turbulence is analyzed. On the one hand, the DNS data well support the classical Damköhler expression, i.e., square-root dependence of a ratio of turbulent and laminar consumption velocities on the turbulent Reynolds number. On the other hand, contrary to the common interpretation of the Damköhler theory and, in particular, to the concept of distributed burning, the DNS data show that the reaction is still localized to thin zones even at Da as low as 0.01, with the aforementioned ratio of the consumption velocities being mainly controlled by the reaction-zone-surface area. To reconcile these apparently inconsistent numerical findings, an alternative regime of propagation of reaction waves in a highly turbulent medium is analyzed, i.e., propagation of an infinitely thin reaction sheet is theoretically studied, with molecular mixing of the reactant and product being allowed in wide layers. In this limiting case, an increase in the consumption velocity by turbulence is solely controlled by an increase in the reaction-sheet area. Based on physical reasoning and estimates, the area is hypothesized to be close to the mean area of an inert iso-scalar surface at the same turbulent Reynolds number. This hypothesis leads to the aforementioned square-root dependence. Thus, both the DNS data and the developed theory show that a widely accepted hypothesis on penetration of small-scale turbulent eddies into reaction zones is not necessary to obtain the classical Damköhler scaling for turbulent consumption velocity.

Direct numerical simulation data obtained from four pairs of turbulent, lean hydrogen–air, complex-chemistry flames are analysed to explore the influence of molecular diffusion on flame surface ...density, displacement speed $S_d$ and the flame surface density transport equation terms. Each pair involves (i) a flame where mixture-averaged molecular diffusivities are adopted and Lewis number $Le$ is significantly less than unity and (ii) an equidiffusive flame where all molecular diffusivities are set equal to molecular heat diffusivity of the mixture and $Le=1$, with other things being equal. Reported results show that significantly higher turbulent burning rates simulated in the former flames result mainly from an increase in the local fuel consumption rate, whereas an increase in flame surface area plays a secondary role, especially in more intense turbulence. The rate increase stems from (i) an increase in the peak local fuel consumption rate and (ii) an increase in a width of a zone where the rate is significant. The latter phenomenon is of more importance in richer flames and both phenomena are most pronounced in the vicinity of the flame leading edges, thus indicating a crucial role played by the leading edge of a premixed turbulent flame in its propagation. Moreover, mean displacement speed differs significantly from the laminar flame speed even in the equidiffusive flames, varies substantially across flame brush and may be negative at the leading edges of highly turbulent flames.
