Since 1997, several epizootic avian influenza viruses （AlVs） have been transmitted to humans, causing diseases and even deaths. The recent emergence of severe human infections with AIV （H7N9） in ...China has raised concerns about efficient interpersonal viral transmission, polygenic traits in viral pathogenicity and the management of newly emerging strains. The symptoms associated with viral infection are different in various AI strains： H5N1 and newly emerged H7N9 induce severe pneumonia and related complications in patients, while some H7 and H9 subtypes cause only conjunctivitis or mild respiratory symptoms. The virulence and tissue tropism of viruses as well as the host responses contribute to the pathogenesis of human AIV infection. Several preventive and therapeutic approaches have been proposed to combat AIV infection, including antiviral drugs such as M2 inhibitors, neuraminidase inhibitors, RNA polymerase inhibitors, attachment inhibitors and signal-transduction inhibitors etc. In this article, we summarize the recent prog ress in researches on the epidemiology, clinical features, pathogenicity determinants, and available or potential antivirals of AIV.
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of the combination of robot‐assisted percutaneous screw placement and pelvic internal fixator (INFIX) for minimally ...invasive treatment of unstable anterior and posterior pelvic ring injuries.
Methods
From September 2016 to June 2017, twenty‐four patients with unstable anterior and posterior pelvic ring injuries were treated with TiRobot‐assisted percutaneous sacroiliac cannulated screw fixation on the posterior pelvic ring combined with robot‐assisted pedicle screw placement in the anterior inferior iliac spine along with INFIX on the anterior pelvic ring. The results of the treatment, including surgery duration, fluoroscopy frequency, total drilling, amount of blood loss, fracture healing time, and postoperative functional outcomes were recorded and compared with another 21 similar patients who underwent conventional manual positioning surgery.
Results
The TiRobot group incurred significantly shorter duration of surgery; less fluoroscopy frequency, intraoperative bleeding, and total drilling than in the conventional group (P < 0.05). Postoperative radiological follow‐up showed that all screws were in the safe area and no screw penetrated the cortex. All wounds healed by primary intention and no iatrogenic damage to the blood vessels, nerves, and organs occurred. Patients showed good tolerance to INFIX and reported no discomfort. The mean follow‐up duration was 5.4 months; the fractures were all healed, no loss of reduction occurred, and the mean Majeed score at the last follow‐up did not show any difference.
Conclusion
TiRobot‐assisted percutaneous screw placement combined with INFIX for the anterior and posterior pelvic ring injuries is accurate, safe, less invasive, and shows satisfactory efficacy, suggesting it is a better method for minimally invasive treatment of unstable pelvic ring fractures.
Quantitative understanding of human movement behaviors would provide helpful insights into the mechanisms of many socioeconomic phenomena. In this paper, we investigate human mobility patterns ...through analyzing taxi-trace datasets collected from five metropolitan cities in two countries. We focus on three statistics for each dataset: the displacement of each occupied trip, the duration of each occupied trip, and the time interval between successive occupied trips by the same taxi (interevent time). The results indicate that the displacement distributions of human travel by taxi tend to follow exponential laws in two displacement ranges rather than power laws; the trip duration distributions can be approximated by log-normal distributions; the interevent time distributions can be well characterized by log-normal bodies followed by power law tails. For each considered measure, the rescaled distributions of all cities collapsed into a master curve. These results provide empirical evidence supporting the common regularity of intra-city human mobility. Moreover, we show that airport locations could play a role in explaining the spikes of displacement distributions of taxi trips in certain cities.

Both experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrated that the excellent performance of the as-obtained Cui/NC-900 could be attributed to the synergistic effect between copper coordinated by three N atoms active sites and the neighbouring carbon defect, resulting in elevated Cu d-band centers of Cu atoms and facilitating intermediate desorption for ORR process. This study may lead towards the development of highly efficient non-noble metal catalysts for applications in electrochemical energy conversion.
Renal biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosing membranous nephropathy (MN). Recent studies have suggested that renal biopsy can be replaced with the serum phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) ...antibody test for MN diagnosis in patients with nephrotic syndrome. However, this test has not been validated in the Chinese population. In this study, we investigated whether renal biopsy provides additional diagnostic information on patients with proteinuria who are seropositive for PLA2R antibodies (SAb +). We retrospectively reviewed the clinicopathological characteristics of SAb + adult patients (aged ≥ 18 years) with proteinuria (≥ 0.5 g/24 h) assessed at the Department of Nephrology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, from June 2021 to March 2022. Among a total of 801 SAb + patients who received renal biopsy, those with incomplete pathological data, diabetes or any potential cause of secondary MN were excluded. Among the 491 remaining patients, 474 had primary MN (PMN), 16 had atypical MN (AMN, 9 patients with "full house" and 2 patients with HBsAg + /HBcAg + immunofluorescence results), and 1 had focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. In patients with an eGFR of ≥ 60 mL/min/1.73 m
(n = 451), 436 had PMN, and 71 (16.3%) exhibited additional biopsy findings, with obesity-related glomerulopathy being the most common. In patients with an impaired eGFR (n = 40), 38 had PMN, and 31 (81.6%) showed additional findings, with acute tubular injury being the most common. In conclusion, anti-PLA2R antibody positivity is highly predictive of PMN in Chinese adults but often coexists with other pathological diagnoses. The advantages of renal biopsy for detecting other pathologies should be weighed against the potential risks of the biopsy procedure.
Iron-dependent autotrophic denitrification (IDAD) has garnered increasing interests as an efficient method for removing nitrogen from wastewater with a low carbon to nitrogen ratio. However, an ...inevitable deterioration of IDAD performance casts a shadow over its further development. In this work, the hidden cause for such a deterioration is uncovered, and a viable solution to this problem is provided. Batch test results reveal that the aggregation of microbial cells and iron-bearing minerals induced a cumulative and reversible inhibition on the activity of IDAD sludge. Extracellular polymeric substances were found to play a glue-like role in the cell–iron mineral aggregates, where microbial cells were caged, and their metabolisms were suppressed. Adopting low-intensity ultrasound treatment efficiently restored the IDAD activity by disintegrating such aggregates rather than stimulating the microbial metabolism. Moreover, the ultrasonication-assisted IDAD bioreactor exhibited an advantageous nitrogen removal efficiency (with a maximum enhancement of 72.3%) and operational stability compared to the control one, demonstrating a feasible strategy to achieve long-term stability of the IDAD process. Overall, this work provides a better understanding about the mechanism for the performance deterioration and a simple approach to maintain the stability of IDAD.
Crocetin (CRT), an active compound isolated from saffron, exhibits several pharmacological activities, including anti-tumor and immune-regulatory activities, and is effective against myocardial ...ischemia and coronary heart disease; however, its low stability and solubility limit its clinical application. Therefore, we investigated CRT inclusion complexes (ICs) with three cyclodextrins-α-CD, HP-β-CD, and γ-CD-suitable for oral administration prepared using an ultrasonic method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction indicated that the crystalline state of CRT in ICs disappeared, and intermolecular interactions were observed between CRT and CDs.
H nuclear magnetic resonance and phase solubility studies confirmed CRT encapsulation in the CD cavity and the formation of ICs. In addition, we observed the morphology of ICs using scanning electron microscopy. All ICs showed a high drug encapsulation efficiency (approximately 90%) with 6500-10,000 times better solubilities than those of the pure drug. CRT showed rapid dissolution, whereas pure CRT was water-insoluble. The formation of ICs significantly improved the storage stability of CRT under heat, light, and moisture conditions. Further, the peak time of CRT in rats significantly decreased, and the relative bioavailability increased by approximately 3-4 times. In addition, the oral bioavailability of CRT IC was evaluated. Notably, the absorption rate and degree of the drug in rats were improved. This study illustrated the potential applications of CRT/CD ICs in the food, healthcare, and pharmaceutical industries, owing to their favorable dissolution, solubility, stability, and oral bioavailability.
Greater levels of solar energy storage provide an effective solution to the inherent nature of intermittency, and can substantially improve reliability, availability, and quality of the renewable ...energy source. Here we demonstrated an all-vanadium (all-V) continuous-flow photoelectrochemical storage cell (PESC) to achieve efficient and high-capacity storage of solar energy, through improving both photocurrent and photocharging depth. It was discovered that forced convective flow of electrolytes greatly enhanced the photocurrent by 5 times comparing to that with stagnant electrolytes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) study revealed a great reduction of charge transfer resistance with forced convective flow of electrolytes as a result of better mass transport at U-turns of the tortuous serpentine flow channel of the cell. Taking advantage of the improved photocurrent and diminished charge transfer resistance, the all-V continuous-flow PESC was capable of producing ~20% gain in state of charge (SOC) under AM1.5 illumination for ca. 1.7 hours without any external bias. This gain of SOC was surprisingly three times more than that with stagnant electrolytes during a 25-hour period of photocharge.
Background
We investigated the microarray data GSE42352 to identify genes that can be used as prognosis factors in osteosarcoma.
Methods
Gene Ontology (GO) biological process analysis and Kyoto ...Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis of Cytoscape ClueGo were used in verifying the function of different genes. Realtime-PCR were used to confirm the microarray results. 83 patient samples were collected and underwent Kaplan–Meier survival analysis and multivariate analysis to predict the prospect of genes using as prognosis factors.
Results
After analyzing the microarray data GSE42352, mitosis metaphase to anaphase-related genes CDC20, securin, cyclin A2 and cyclin B2 were found to be overexpressed in osteosarcoma cell lines. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis showed that overexpression of these genes can predict poor prognosis outcomes in osteosarcoma patients. Furthermore, any combination of the four genes seems to be more effective in predicting osteosarcoma outcomes than any of these genes alone.
Conclusions
CDC20 and its downstream substracts securin, cyclin A2 and cyclin B2 are good factors that can predict prognosis outcomes in osteosarcoma. Any two combination of these four genes are more effective to be used as osteosarcoma prognosis factors.
