From the sixteen to the eighteenth century, new anatomical investigations of the brain and the nervous system, together with a renewed interest in comparative anatomy, allowed doctors and ...philosophers to ground their theories on sense perception, the emergence of human intelligence, and the soul/body relationship in modern science. They investigated the anatomical structures and the physiological processes underlying the rise, differentiation, and articulation of human cognitive activities, and looked for the “anatomical roots” of the specificity of human intelligence when compared to other forms of animal sensibility. This edited volume focuses on medical and philosophical debates on human intelligence and animal perception in the early modern age, providing fresh insights into the influence of medical discourse on the rise of modern philosophical anthropology. Contributions from distinguished historians of philosophy and medicine focus on sixteenth-century zoological, psychological, and embryological discourses on man; the impact of mechanism and comparative anatomy on philosophical conceptions of body and soul; and the key status of sensibility in the medical and philosophical enlightenment.
This work proposes an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) able to provide an accurate forecasting of power produced by photovoltaic (PV) plants. The ANN is customized on the basis of the particular ...season of the year. An accurate analysis of input variables, i.e., solar irradiance, temperature and air humidity, carried out by means of Pearson Correlation, has allowed to select, day by day, the most suitable set of inputs and ANN architecture also to reduce the necessity of large computational resource. Thus, features are added to the ANN as needed, avoiding waste of computational resources. The method has been validated through data collected from a PV plant installed in ENEA (National agency for new technologies, energy and sustainable economic development) Research Center, located in Casaccia, Rome (Italy). The developed strategy is able to furnish accurate predictions even in the case of strong irregularities of solar irradiance, providing accurate results in rapidly changing scenarios.
Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) batteries are widely used for energy storage applications in microgrids systems. A real time estimation of static and dynamic conditions of the battery pack, such as the ...remaining capacity or the aging effects, is fundamental for these applications, where it is necessary to ensure stability and reliability in the power supply. Since the internal state of each cell cannot be directly measured, a model-based estimation algorithm has to be implemented to further describe the performance of the whole battery pack. This work proposes a simplified version of the equivalent circuit model capable of describing the behavior of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for microgrid applications. To create an accurate model based on experimental data, data relating to different Lithium technologies of storage systems located in ENEA Research Centre Casaccia were collected. Each BESS was subjected to discharge cycles operating at variable C-Rate, in order to carry out the same parameters identification process and analyze the behavior of the different technologies. The results demonstrate that the electrical parameters obtained for a specific C-rate and for the same BESS technology can be used for discharges carried out at the same power but on different days, showing a robustness of the proposed model in terms of reduced RMSE between the experimental and the simulated curves.

I attempt both to assess its place in ...the wider context of eighteenth-century medical Empiricism and Neo-Hippocratism and also to understand to what extent La Mettrie’s call for a medical practice based on observation can be considered as an expression of the long-term intellectual and epistemological process that culminated in the birth of clinical medicine.

This paper describes the numerical modelling of a key material-stability issue within the realm of Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFC). Differential models have been developed for the 2D and 3D ...distributions of current density as well as peroxide and carbon dioxide concentrations. By suitable variations of the integration domain – based on the agglomerate concept – one can describe the morphological and attending electrocatalytic evolution of porous NiO electrodes. On the basis of electrochemical data recorded during the operation of a laboratory MCFC, we have shown that this model is able to rationalise the evolution of cathode conditions leading to both improvements of electrocatalytic performance – such as lithiation – and degradation – such as agglomeration –.
Die Arbeiten von Werner Jaeger haben vor etwa hundert Jahren das Studium der Antike prägend und international beeinflusst, insbesondere im Bereich der Geschichte der antiken Wissenschaft und ...Philosophie, doch bleibt die Figur Jaegers umstritten. Er steht am Ende einer Glanzzeit der Philologie an der Berliner Universität und erlangte früh internationale Anerkennung sowie enormen Einfluss. Sowohl sein wissenschaftliches Werk als auch seine Paideia wurden stark rezipiert, letztere sogar in viele Sprachen übersetzt. In bemerkenswertem Gegensatz zu diesem frühen Glanz stehen die späteren Jahre seines Schaffens, in denen er trotz prominenter Stellung an der Harvard University nur relativ schwach nachwirkte. Das Ziel ist, zu differenzierten Urteilen über die durchaus gemischte Bilanz von Jaegers Werk und Wirken zu kommen. Seine wissenschafts- und philosophiehistorischen Leistungen sowie sein Agieren im bildungspolitischen Kontext seiner Zeit werden eingeordnet und kritisch untersucht.
In this work different management strategies for Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS) have been modeled in the ENEA's Simulator Plant and subsequently tested on field in the PV Plant. The Plant ...(12 kWp, 12 kWh) is equipped with ABB REACT1 systems. A relevant aspect of the Plant is the Energy Management System (EMS), developed by ENEA that allows the EESS control and supervision in real time according to the selected management strategy. Self-consumption and Peak-Shaving strategies have been modeled and successfully tested.
Few discoveries in the history of medicine had a greater impact than William Harvey’s discovery of the circulation of blood, and few intellectual milieus of the early modern period had as decisive a ...part in the rise of ‘modern’ medicine and the shaping of the western scientific mentality in general than the philosophical and scientific movement of ‘Venetian Aristotelianism’, which grew up around the University of Padua, where Harvey himself had studied. In this chapter, I aim to explore some aspects of the intellectual movement of ‘Venetian Aristotelianism’ as well as the debate that ensued upon the discovery of the circulation of blood. My focus, however, is not on any of the major protagonists, but rather on a quite marginal figure in this debate, namely Hieronymus Franzosi.
