In this paper we present new image quality database VCL@FER (
http://www.vcl.fer.hr/quality/
) which consists of four degradation types, 6 levels of each degradation and 23 different images (552 ...degraded images). It can be used in objective image quality evaluation, as well as to develop and test new image quality measures. Results for six commonly used full reference objective quality measures are compared using newly developed image database, as well as 6 other image databases.
Image quality assessment is a challenging task that is traditionally approached by computational models. To maintain, control, and enhance the quality of images, it is important for image ...acquisition, management, communication, and processing systems to be able to identify and quantify image quality degradations. A great deal of effort has been made in recent years to develop objective image quality metrics that correlate with perceived quality measurement. To find the right solution to this problem we need measures to estimate quality and amounts of degradation compared with original image to determinate optimal quality of the coded picture. This paper provides comparison of subjective and objective picture quality for three different distortions, each made with four different levels of distortion.
TV program material is produced in various formats with diverse image aspect ratios. SDTV image usually has 4:3 aspect ratio, while HDTV image has an aspect ratio of 16:9. To ensure proper display of ...content on different display devices, there are methods for conversion between different formats. Also, there are methods of transmitting information about aspect ratio to the TV receivers, which allows them to switch to the correct display mode. It is necessary to make some compromises to manage image aspect ratio conversion and display the converted image. These include distortion of the image or parts of the image, losing parts of the image, or leaving parts of the screen unused and filled with black patterns.
There is an increasing need to discover effective methods for treating municipal wastewater and addressing the threat of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of bacteria spreading into the environment ...and drinking water. Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) that combines a photosensitiser and light in the presence of oxygen to generate singlet oxygen and other reactive species, which in turn react with a range of biomolecules, including the oxidation of bacterial genetic material, may be a way to stop the spread of antibiotic-resistant genes. The effect of 5,10,15,20-(pyridinium-3-yl)porphyrin tetrachloride (TMPyP3) without light, and after activation with violet-blue light (VBL) (394 nm; 20 mW/cm.sup.2 ), on MDR strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and K. pneumoniae OXA-48 in tap water and municipal wastewater was investigated. High toxicity (~2 muM) of TMPyP3 was shown in the dark on both strains of K. pneumoniae in tap water, while on P. aeruginosa toxicity in the dark was low (50 muM) and the PDI effect was significant (1.562 muM). However, in wastewater, the toxicity of TMPyP3 without photoactivation was much lower (12.5-100 muM), and the PDI effect was significant for all three bacterial strains, already after 10 min of irradiation with VBL (1.562-6.25 muM). In the same concentrations, or even lower, an anti-adhesion effect was shown, suggesting the possibility of application in biofilm control. By studying the kinetics of photoinactivation, it was found that with 1,562 muM of TMPyP3 it is possible to achieve the complete destruction of all three bacteria after 60 min of irradiation with VBL. This study confirmed the importance of studying the impact of water constituents on the properties and PDI effect of the applied photosensitiser, as well as checking the sensitivity of targeted bacteria to light of a certain wavelength, in conditions as close as possible to those in the intended application, to adjust all parameters and perfect the method.

The information-theoretic unconditional security offered by quantum key distribution has spurred the development of larger quantum communication networks. However, as these networks grow so does the ...strong need to reduce complexity and overheads. Polarization-based entanglement distribution networks are a promising approach due to their scalability and no need for trusted nodes. Nevertheless, they are only viable if the birefringence of all-optical distribution fibres in the network is compensated to preserve the polarization-based quantum state. The brute force approach would require a few hundred fibre polarization controllers for even a moderately sized network. Instead, we propose and investigate four different realizations of polarization compensation schemes that can be used in quantum networks. We compare them based on the type of reference signals, complexity, effort, level of disruption to network operations and performance on a four-user quantum network.
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a cancer with poor prognosis due to therapy resistance, locoregional recurrences, and distant metastases. There is on increased interest in profiling the ...androgen receptor (AR) in cancer biology. The aim of this study was to compare AR and Ki-67 levels in the neoplastic epithelium and stroma between non-metastatic and metastatic stages of OSCC.
Tissue specimens of 101 non-metastatic and 95 metastatic OSCC patients were analyzed by immunohistochemistry.
More than 20% of AR-positive cytoplasmic staining of OSCC epithelium was significantly associated with nuclear AR levels in the epithelium and increased AR levels in the stroma. In metastatic OSCC patients, Ki-67 was significantly higher than in non-metastatic OSCC patients.
More than 20% of AR-positive cytoplasmic staining in neoplastic OSSC epithelium is a significant predictor of OSCC progression risk.
This paper presents experimental and numerical investigation of elasto-plastic-damage behaviour of aluminium alloys. The experimental procedure includes static and dynamic tensile tests at different ...strain rates as well as three point bending tests. Numerical modelling of deformation and failure process of the flat specimens is conducted by using non-isothermal elastoplastic damage constitutive model and two-dimensional plane stress finite elements. During the experiment the displacement and temperature distribution on the specimen's surface is measured by digital image correlation (DIC) method and infrared thermography (IR). This has enabled more precise calibration of material parameters in constitutive relations.

Quantum networks have been shown to connect users with full-mesh topologies without trusted nodes. We present advancements on our scalable polarisation entanglement-based quantum network testbed, ...which has the ability to perform protocols beyond simple quantum key distribution. Our approach utilises wavelength multiplexing, which is ideal for quantum networks across local metropolitan areas due to the ease of connecting additional users to the network without increasing the resource requirements per user. We show a 10 user fully connected quantum network with metropolitan scale deployed fibre links, demonstrating polarisation stability and the ability to generate secret keys over a period of 10.8 days with a network wide average-effective secret key rate of 3.38 bps.
