Scalar-tensor-vector gravity (STVG) is an alternative theory of gravitation that has successfully explained the rotation curves of nearby galaxies, the dynamics of galactic clusters, and cosmological ...data without dark matter, but has hardly been tested in the strong gravity regime. In this work, we aim at building radiative models of thin accretion disks for both Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes in STVG theory. In particular, we study stable circular equatorial orbits around stellar and supermassive black holes in Schwarzschild and Kerr STVG spacetimes. We also calculate the temperature and luminosity distributions of accretion disks around these objects. We find that accretion disks in STVG around stellar and supermassive black holes are colder and less luminous than in GR. The spectral energy distributions obtained do not contradict current astronomical observations.
One's career adaptability can provide valuable information regarding the quality of their life satisfaction and life meaning during important career transitions. To date, however, few studies have ...examined the dispositional antecedents of career adaptability and no studies have specifically explored whether these relationships operate similarly or differently across distinct groups of adult career transitioners. To address this gap, we had 298 young adults (i.e., college seniors or recent graduates poised to enter the workforce) and 169 older adults (i.e., workers who were either contemplating retirement or recently retired) complete measures of adult attachment orientations, career adaptability, life satisfaction, and life meaning. Results demonstrated that attachment security and career adaptability were associated in expected directions with, and explained unique variance in, each of our indicators of subjective well-being, and that career adaptability scores mediated observed relations between adult attachment insecurity and transitioners' well-being. Exploratory analyses further showed that, for both groups of transitioners, career concern and control strategies emerged as significant mediators of these relationships. Future research directions and practical implications of our findings for counseling interventions with career transitioners are discussed.

Wet wrap therapy (WWT) consists of topical steroids administered under a layer of wet cotton bandages or garments. Several trials with WWT have reported promising results in atopic dermatitis ...(AD). However, no systematic review and meta‐analysis on its efficacy and safety has been published. Our objective was to conduct a systematic review of the literature on WWT in AD to assess its efficacy and safety. We included randomized controlled trials among patients of all ages with a diagnosis of AD based on predefined criteria or made by a dermatologist. Electronic searches were performed from 1970 to 30 March 2016 in the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, Embase and the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry. Selection of studies and data extraction were performed independently by two researchers, and discrepancies were resolved by consensus. Six trials comparing WWT with topical steroids in children or adults with AD were included. Sample sizes ranged from 19 to 51 patients. Results on clinical severity and quality of life were reported incompletely and proved heterogeneous across studies. A nonsignificant tendency to increased risk of mild skin infections was observed in those treated with WWT (pooled relative risk 6·35, 95% confidence interval 0·83–48·55). The overall grade of quality of evidence for the efficacy and safety outcomes was low. In conclusion, the evidence that WWT is more effective than conventional treatment with topical steroids in AD is of low quality. Further clinical trials should establish the efficacy of WWT in AD.
What's already known about this topic?
Several clinical trials, as well as some qualitative reviews, have reported promising results for wet wrap therapy (WWT) in the short‐term management of severe flares of atopic dermatitis (AD).
What does this study add?
This is the first systematic review on WWT for AD: it shows there is only low‐quality evidence that this therapy is more effective than standard treatment with topical steroids.

Innovation can be a source of competitive advantage for companies, either through the improvement of methods and techniques capable of generating new products or services, or perfecting existing ...ones. Along these lines, it is particularly important to measure innovation and discuss the results associated therewith. The aim of this research is to address each of the main indicators of organizational innovation, separately discussing the advantages and disadvantages inherent to their deployment. The results entail a substantial theoretical advancement by improving measurement systems from various perspectives: products and processes, manufacturing and services, as well as input indicators, intermediaries and outputs. However, difficulties and limitations are still apparent, including the sort of distorting biases potentially affecting researcher estimates. Furthermore, multidimensional indicators provide a broader and more precise view of the innovation phenomenon at companies, because they are more comprehensive in the understanding of such phenomenon per se, unlike the one-dimensional choice, which carries constraints for discussing the real effects in the organizational context, especially in the case of services.
The US prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is 30.6% and increasing. NAFLD shares some risk factors with periodontitis and dental caries. We explored the association between NAFLD ...and several oral conditions among US adults, using data from the cross-sectional, nationally representative National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 1988 to 1994. NAFLD was assessed with ultrasonography (USON), the screening gold standard not available in the more recent NHANES, and the noninvasive Fibrosis Score (FS), Fatty Liver Index (FLI), and US Fatty Liver Index (US-FLI) as other screening alternatives. There were 5,421 eligible dentate adults aged 21 to 74 y with complete relevant data, with transferrin levels ≤50%, without hepatitis B or C, who were not heavy drinkers. Multivariable models were developed to examine the independent effects of moderate-severe periodontitis, untreated dental caries, caries experience, and tooth loss (<20 teeth) on NAFLD while controlling for clinical, biological, and sociodemographic factors. Weighted estimates for odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs were calculated with logistic regression. Between 17% and 24% of adults had NAFLD depending on the classification criteria. In adjusted models, as compared with those with better oral health, adults with <20 teeth were more likely to have NAFLD depending on the measure (USON: OR = 1.50, 95% CI = 1.11 to 2.02; FS: OR = 4.36, 95% CI = 3.47 to 5.49; FLI: OR = 1.99, 95% CI = 1.52 to 2.59; US-FLI: OR = 2.32, 95% CI = 1.79 to 3.01). People with moderate-severe periodontitis were more likely to have NAFLD (USON: OR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.06 to 2.24; FS: OR = 3.10, 95% CI = 2.31 to 4.17; FLI: OR = 1.61, 95% CI = 1.13 to 2.28; US-FLI: OR = 2.21, 95% CI = 1.64 to 2.98). People with any untreated caries were more likely to have NAFLD (USON: OR = 1.51, 95% CI = 1.20 to 1.90; FLI: OR = 1.80, 95% CI = 1.33 to 2.44). NAFLD was associated with tooth loss, periodontitis, and, for some NAFLD measures, untreated dental caries but not overall caries experience after controlling for several key sociodemographic and behavioral factors. Results suggest that further evaluation is needed to better understand this health–oral health interrelationship and potential opportunities for medical-dental integration.
Nectar-feeding animals have among the highest recorded metabolic rates. High aerobic performance is linked to oxidative damage in muscles. Antioxidants in nectar are scarce to nonexistent. We propose ...that nectarivores use nectar sugar to mitigate the oxidative damage caused by the muscular demands of flight. We found that sugar-fed moths had lower oxidative damage to their flight muscle membranes than unfed moths. Using respirometry coupled with δ13C analyses, we showed that moths generate antioxidant potential by shunting nectar glucose to the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), resulting in a reduction in oxidative damage to the flight muscles. We suggest that nectar feeding, the use of PPP, and intense exercise are causally linked and have allowed the evolution of powerful fliers that feed on nectar.
Divalent counterions promote attractive forces between polyelectrolyte chains via electrostatic bridging, which play an important role in the conformation of ionic biopolymers. Further, counterion ...valence is known to affect the flexibility and aggregation properties of polyelectrolytes in solution. The present study seeks to resolve the effect of counterion valence and type on the structure and flow properties of a model semiflexible polyelectrolyte. counterions do not interact specifically with the carboxylate groups, and their CMC salts form clear solutions in the concentration (
c
) range studied (0.001 M < c < 0.3 M), which spans from the dilute to the entangled regimes. The other salts form clear solutions at low concentrations and become turbid at higher ones. The specific viscosity as a function of molar polymer concentration falls into a single curve for all divalent salts, with small differences occurring only for c > 0.2 M. Compared NaCMC, divalent salts display a lower viscosities at low concentrations (in the non-entangled regime), suggesting less expanded chains, in agreement with earlier experimental results on flexible polyelectrolytes. Above the entanglement crossover (
c
≃
0.07 M), solutions with divalent counterions display viscosities up to an order of magnitude larger than NaCMC, possibly because interchain crosslinks form by electrostatic bridging. Dynamic light scattering measurements on semidilute non-entangled solutions reveal a bimodal decay function, where the relative amplitudes of the two modes vary with counterion valence, size as well as with the filter size employed and the time after filtration. These variables (except for counterion valency) do not strongly affect the solution viscosity, indicating that polyelectrolyte clusters only contain a small fraction of the total number of chains in solution.

Bell pepper presents rapid weight loss and is highly susceptible to gray mold caused by the fungus Botrytis cinerea. The most employed method to control this disease is the application of synthetic ...fungicides such as thiabendazole (TBZ); however, its continued use causes resistance in fungi as well as environmental problems. For these reasons, natural alternatives arise as a more striking option. Currently, bell pepper fruits are coated with carnauba wax (CW) to prevent weight loss and improve appearance. Moreover, CW can be used as a carrier to incorporate essential oils, and previous studies have shown that thyme essential oil (TEO) is highly effective against B. cinerea. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of CW combined with TEO on the development of gray mold and maintenance of microestructural and postharvest quality in bell pepper stored at 13°C. The minimal inhibitory concentration of TEO was 0.5%. TEO and TBZ provoked the leakage of intracellular components. TEO and CW + TEO treatments were equally effective to inhibit the development of gray mold. On the quality parameters, firmness and weight loss were ameliorated with CW and CW + TEO treatments; whereas lightness increased in these treatments. The structural analysis showed that CW + TEO treatment maintained the cell structure reducing the apparition of deformities. The results suggest that CW + TEO treatment could be used as a natural and effective antifungal retarding the appearance of gray mold and maintaining the postharvest quality of bell pepper.
Practical Application
CW and TEO are classified as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This combination can be employed on the bell pepper packaging system to extend shelf life and oppose gray mold developments. Bell pepper fruits are normally coated with lipid‐base coatings such as CW before commercialization; therefore, TEO addition would represent a small investment without any changes on the packaging system infrastructure.
Abstract
We perform a full 3D general relativistic magnetohydrodynamical (GRMHD) simulation of an equal-mass, spinning, binary black hole approaching merger, surrounded by a circumbinary disk and ...with a minidisk around each black hole. For this purpose, we evolve the ideal GRMHD equations on top of an approximated spacetime for the binary that is valid in every position of space, including the black hole horizons, during the inspiral regime. We use relaxed initial data for the circumbinary disk from a previous long-term simulation, where the accretion is dominated by a
m
= 1 overdensity called the lump. We compare our new spinning simulation with a previous non-spinning run, studying how spin influences the minidisk properties. We analyze the accretion from the inner edge of the lump to the black hole, focusing on the angular momentum budget of the fluid around the minidisks. We find that minidisks in the spinning case have more mass over a cycle than the non-spinning case. However, in both cases we find that most of the mass received by the black holes is delivered by the direct plunging of material from the lump. We also analyze the morphology and variability of the electromagnetic fluxes, and we find they share the same periodicities of the accretion rate. In the spinning case, we find that the outflows are stronger than the non-spinning case. Our results will be useful to understand and produce realistic synthetic light curves and spectra, which can be used in future observations.
