The evaluation of zoo animals’ personalities can likely lead to a range of benefits, including improving breeding success, creating stable social groups, and designing and developing environmental ...enrichment programmes. The goal of this study was to use caretakers scores to evaluate personality in bottlenose dolphins and to assess the reliability of scores within each rater and among raters from each centre. To this end, 24 caretakers from 3 countries (Spain, France, and Argentina), including a total of 5 dolphinariums and 6 groups of dolphins, used a questionnaire based on the Five-Factor Model of Personality to score bottlenose dolphins on a number of personality traits in three different contexts. Each caretaker evaluated the animals under their care twice, ensuring that raters did not share thoughts nor impressions with other raters. Our findings showed a good degree of agreement between each rater’s scores and a fair degree of agreement among scores of raters from the same centre. We also identified which raters and centres had significant mean score differences and detected that 4 out of 24 raters from two different centres showed such differences systematically. The evaluation of raters’ reliability and the identification of particular inconsistent raters and centres is critical to make more appropriate and realistic management decisions that, in turn, directly impact animals’ welfare.

Vascular calcification (VC) is a common complication in patients with chronic kidney disease which increases their mortality. Although oxidative stress is involved in the onset and progression of ...this disorder, the specific role of some of the main redox regulators, such as catalase, the main scavenger of H2O2, remains unclear. In the present study, epigastric arteries of kidney transplant recipients, a rat model of VC, and an in vitro model of VC exhibiting catalase (Cts) overexpression were analysed. Pericalcified areas of human epigastric arteries had increased levels of catalase and cytoplasmic, rather than nuclear runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2). In the rat model, advanced aortic VC concurred with lower levels of the H2O2-scavenger glutathione peroxidase 3 compared to controls. In an early model of calcification using vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), Cts VSMCs showed the expected increase in total levels of RUNX2. However, Cts VMSCs also exhibited a lower percentage of the nucleus stained for RUNX2 in response to calcifying media. In this early model of VC, we did not observe a dysregulation of the mitochondrial redox state; instead, an increase in the general redox state was observed in the cytoplasm. These results highlight the complex role of antioxidant enzymes as catalase by regulation of RUNX2 subcellular location delaying the onset of VC.
An optimisation framework for near field multifocusing on antenna arrays is proposed. Its aim is to obtain the feeding weights that must be applied to the elements of the array so that the antenna ...focuses on two or more targets simultaneously. The method is based on the definition of a proper cost function, which is minimised using an optimisation algorithm over an equivalent least squares problem. The success of the technique is noted in the fact that different array parameters can be obtained: magnitude and phase of the array elements or only phase synthesis. In order to show the efficiency of the method, several tests are carried out using different arrays and optimisation parameters. The simulation, manufacture and measurement of an 8 × 8 planar array able to focus on two different targets is also performed. Results show how the framework can be applied to general arrays and demanding requirements, so it may be easily extended to different synthesis problems besides multifocusing.
A machine learning technique is applied to the design and optimization of reflectarray antennas to considerably accelerate computing time without compromising accuracy. In particular, support vector ...machines (SVMs), automatic learning structures that are able to deal with regression problems, are employed to obtain surrogate models of the reflectarray element to substitute the full-wave analysis tool for the characterization of the unit cell in the design and optimization algorithms. The analysis, design, and optimization of a very large reflectarray antenna for Direct Broadcast Satellite applications are accelerated up to three orders of magnitude. This is here demonstrated with three examples: one showing the design of a reflectarray and two for the crosspolar optimization, one with one coverage for each linear polarization (Europe and the Middle East) and another with a Middle East coverage working in dual-linear polarization. The accuracy of the proposed approach is validated by means of a comparison of the final designs with full-wave simulations based on local periodicity obtaining good agreement. The crosspolar dicrimination and crosspolar isolation are greatly improved using the SVMs while considerably reducing computing time.
The objective in this work was the evaluation of the stability and content of bioactive compounds (total phenols and total flavonoids) and antioxidant activity of emulsions of ethanolic extracts of ...propolis obtained by ultrasound, during simulated in vitro digestion. The emulsions prepared with propolis extracts were evaluated on certain properties: their emulsion efficiency, stability (zeta potential, particle size, electrical conductivity), content of bioactive compound (total phenolics and total flavonoids), antioxidant activity and their behavior during simulated in vitro digestion. Based on the total phenol content, an emulsification efficiency of 87.8 ± 1.9% to 97.8 ± 3.8% was obtained. The particle size of the emulsions was 322.5 ± 15.33 nm to 463.9 ± 33.65 nm, with a zeta potential of -31.5 ± 0.66 mV to -28.2 ± 1.0 mV and electrical conductivity of 22.7 ± 1.96 µS/cm to 30.6 ± 0.91 µS/cm. These results indicate good emulsion stability. During simulated in vitro digestion, the content of bioactive compounds (total phenolics, total flavonoids) and antioxidant activity were affected during 77 days of storage at 4 °C. It was concluded that the emulsion process fulfills the function of protecting the bioactive compounds and therefore their biological activity.
design and validate a questionnaire to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of nurses about the subcutaneous venous reservoir.
pilot test: 30 specialized care nurses. Main study: 236 nurses of ...primary and specialized care. Content validity was evaluated by Lawshe index, reliability by test-retest, internal consistency by Cronbach alpha, and construct validity by exploratory factorial analysis.
Items with a Lawshe index lower than 0.51 were eliminated. In the test-retest, the intraclass correlation coefficient was higher than 0.75 for all items. The Cronbach alpha of the attitude questionnaire reached 0.865. The Cronbach alpha value for knowledge was 0.750. The exploratory factor analysis identified a set of four dimensions for each part that explain 64% (attitude) to 80% (knowledge) of variability.
the analysis of the reliability and validity of the questionnaire supports its use as an instrument to assess the knowledge and attitudes of nurses towards the subcutaneous venous reservoir.
The global trend of increasing life expectancy introduces new challenges with far-reaching implications. Among these, the risk of falls among older adults is particularly significant, affecting ...individual health and the quality of life, and placing an additional burden on healthcare systems. Existing fall detection systems often have limitations, including delays due to continuous server communication, high false-positive rates, low adoption rates due to wearability and comfort issues, and high costs. In response to these challenges, this work presents a reliable, wearable, and cost-effective fall detection system. The proposed system consists of a fit-for-purpose device, with an embedded algorithm and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), enabling real-time fall detection. The algorithm combines a Threshold-Based Algorithm (TBA) and a neural network with low number of parameters based on a Transformer architecture. This system demonstrates notable performance with 95.29% accuracy, 93.68% specificity, and 96.66% sensitivity, while only using a 0.38% of the trainable parameters used by the other approach.
The Flash Guide (FG) for insulin dosing (A. Chico, C. González) was the first document intended for FreeStyle Libre® (FSL) user patients to help with decision-making depending on glucose level and ...trend. The objective of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of and the level of satisfaction with the recommendations given by the FG in a group of patients with type 1 diabetes (DM1) who were FSL users. It included 31 subjects (54% women; age 41±15 years; DM duration 21±14 years; 22 with FSL>12 months) who were provided with the FG. They completed a questionnaire on decision-making depending on glucose trend in different situations (before and three months after using the FG), and a satisfaction questionnaire (ad hoc). Demographic, clinical and glycaemic control data were collected. The percentage of subjects who used glucose trend in decision-making after receiving the FG increased: for adjusting insulin (51 vs. 83; P=.016), action without insulin (51 vs. 90%; P=.001), and in special circumstances. The FG was evaluated as very useful (4.19/5). There were no significant changes in glycaemic control, although the percentage of data gathered increased significantly (89.07 vs. 94.46%; P=.042). In conclusion, the FG was evaluated well for managing glucose trends with FSL by the patients with DM1 analysed, increasing their use of trend in decision-making, with no changes in glycaemic control, but with more data gathered.
The aim of the present study was to use cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) to assess horizontal bone augmentation using block grafts, harvested from either the iliac crest (IC) or mandibular ...ramus (MR) combined with particulate xenograft and a collagen membrane for in the severe maxillary anterior ridge defects (cases Class III-IV according to Cadwood and Howell's classification). Fourteen healthy partially edentulous patients requiring extensive horizontal bone reconstruction in the anterior maxilla were selected for the study. Nineteen onlay block grafts (from IC or MR) were placed. The amount of horizontal bone gain was recorded by CBCT at 3 levels (5, 7, and 11 mm from the residual ridge) and at the time of bone grafting as well as the time of implant placement (≈5 months). Both block donor sites provided enough ridge width for proper implant placement. Nonetheless, IC had significantly greater ridge width gain than MR (Student t test) (4.93 mm vs 3.23 mm). This was further confirmed by nonparametric Mann-Whitney test (P = .007). Moreover, mean pristine ridge and grafted ridge values showed a direct association (Spearman coefficient of correlation = .336). A combination of block graft, obtained from the IC or MR, combined with particulate xenograft then covered with an absorbable collagen membrane is a predictable technique for augmenting anterior maxillary horizontal ridge deficiency.
The Sources Reconstruction Method (SRM) is a non-invasive technique for, among other applications, antenna characterization. The SRM is based on obtaining a distribution of equivalent currents that ...radiate the same field as the antenna under test. The computation of these currents requires solving a linear system, usually ill-posed, that may be very computationally demanding for commercial antennas. Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are an interesting hardware choice for solving compute-bound problems that are prone to parallelism. In this paper, we present an implementation on GPUs of the SRM applied to antenna characterization that is based on a compute-bound algorithm with a high degree of parallelism. The GPU implementation introduced in this work provides a dramatic reduction on the time cost compared to our CPU implementation and, in addition, keeps the low-memory footprint of the latter. For the sake of illustration, the equivalent currents are obtained on a base station antenna array and a helix antenna working at practical frequencies. Quasi real-time results are obtained on a desktop workstation.
