Background: Since the end of 2023, an elevated incidence and severity of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections among children in Asia has been noted. Subsequently, this trend was observed in several ...European countries although limited data are currently available. We conducted a national study to delineate the ongoing M. pneumoniae outbreak in our country. Methods: A multicenter retrospective observational study was conducted across 32 hospitals in Spain, encompassing patients under 18 years old hospitalized for M . pneumoniae infection from January 2023 to March 2024. Infection was confirmed by positive polymerase chain reaction and/or by 2 serological tests. Results: A total of 623 children were included, with 79% of cases diagnosed in the final 3 months of the study period. Pneumonia was the most common diagnosis (87%). Respiratory symptoms were present in 97% of cases, with 62% requiring oxygen supplementation and 14% requiring admission to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Risk factors for PICU admission included the presence of neurological symptoms, hypoxemia and a history of prematurity. Children admitted to the PICU exhibited significantly higher neutrophil counts upon admission. Conclusions: We have observed a notable increase in hospital admissions, including PICU support by up to 14%, due to M. pneumoniae infection in our country since November 2023, indicative of a more severe clinical course associated with this pathogen.
Oleaginous fungi natively accumulate large amounts of triacylglycerides (TAG), widely used as precursors for sustainable biodiesel production. However, little attention has been paid to the diversity ...and roles of fungal mixed microbial cultures (MMCs) in sequencing batch reactors (SBR). In this study, a lipid-rich stream produced in the fish-canning industry was used as a substrate in two laboratory-scale SBRs operated under the feast/famine (F/F) regime to enrich microorganisms with high TAG-storage ability, under two different concentrations of NaCl (SBR-N: 0.5 g/L; SBR-S: 10 g/L). The size of the fungal community in the enriched activated sludge (EAS) was analyzed using 18S rRNA-based qPCR, and the fungal community structure was determined by Illumina sequencing. The different selective pressures (feeding strategy and control of pH) implemented in the enrichment SBRs throughout operation increased the abundance of total fungi. In general, there was an enrichment of genera previously identified as TAG-accumulating fungi (Apiotrichum, Candida, Cutaneotrichosporon, Geotrichum, Haglerozyma, Metarhizium, Mortierella, Saccharomycopsis, and Yarrowia) in both SBRs. However, the observed increase of their relative abundances throughout operation was not significantly linked to a higher TAG accumulation.

•Fungal diversity was explored in SBRs aiming at TAG-accumulation from waste fish oil.•A double-growth limitation strategy increased absolute fungal abundance.•Fungi with the potential for TAG-accumulation were abundant at 0.5 and 10 g/L NaCl.•TAG-accumulating genera were enriched at both salinities at the end of the operation.•Apiotrichum and Candida are promising candidates to accumulate TAG from waste fish oil.
Introduction: foot examination is essential in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). The correct evaluation of the foot in the patient who attends diabetes control is key to establish risk factors ...for the development of ulcers, detect injuries, take preventive measures, make an early referral and educate in foot care. Objectives: in this study, the feet of people with DM were examined during the Diabetic Foot Awareness and Prevention Campaign on November 1, 2019 in order to assess the presence of symptoms and signs related to neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, prevalence of the same and know the risk. Materials and methods: 165 patients were analyzed in four centers: Sanatorio Güemes (Diabetes and Endocrinology Service), PREDIGMA (Preventive Medicine Center, Posadas, Misiones), Central Hospital of San Isidro, Nexo Medical Center (Junín City) and Hospital Municipal of General Viamonte (Province of Buenos Aires).
The biosynthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) from industrial wastes by mixed microbial cultures (MMCs) enriched in PHA-accumulating bacteria is a promising technology to replace petroleum-based ...plastics. However, the populations' dynamics in the PHA-accumulating MMCs are not well known. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to address the shifts in the size and structure of the bacterial communities in two lab-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) fed with fish-canning effluents and operated under non-saline (SBR-N, 0.5 g NaCl/L) or saline (SBR-S, 10 g NaCl/L) conditions, by using a combination of quantitative PCR and Illumina sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA genes. A double growth limitation (DGL) strategy, in which nitrogen availability was limited and uncoupled to carbon addition, strongly modulated the relative abundances of the PHA-accumulating bacteria, leading to an increase in the accumulation of PHAs, independently of the saline conditions (average 9.04 wt% and 11.69 wt%, maximum yields 22.03 wt% and 26.33% SBR-N and SBR-S, respectively). On the other hand, no correlations were found among the PHAs accumulation yields and the absolute abundances of total
, which decreased through time in the SBR-N and did not present statistical differences in the SBR-S.

Humans are unique in their diet, physiology and socio-reproductive behavior compared to other primates. They are also unique in the ubiquitous adaptation to all biomes and habitats. From an ...evolutionary perspective, these trends seem to have started about two million years ago, coinciding with the emergence of encephalization, the reduction of the dental apparatus, the adoption of a fully terrestrial lifestyle, resulting in the emergence of the modern anatomical bauplan, the focalization of certain activities in the landscape, the use of stone tools, and the exit from Africa. It is in this period that clear taphonomic evidence of a switch in diet with respect to Pliocene hominins occurred, with the adoption of carnivory. Until now, the degree of carnivorism in early humans remained controversial. A persistent hypothesis is that hominins acquired meat irregularly (potentially as fallback food) and opportunistically through klepto-foraging. Here, we test this hypothesis and show, in contrast, that the butchery practices of early Pleistocene hominins (unveiled through systematic study of the patterning and intensity of cut marks on their prey) could not have resulted from having frequent secondary access to carcasses. We provide evidence of hominin primary access to animal resources and emphasize the role that meat played in their diets, their ecology and their anatomical evolution, ultimately resulting in the ecologically unrestricted terrestrial adaptation of our species. This has major implications to the evolution of human physiology and potentially for the evolution of the human brain.
