Walkable neighborhoods are known for bringing social and economic benefits to their residents. One of these benefits is the real estate premium associated with the neighborhood's walkability, which ...has been explored in studies worldwide. Here, we extend the available evidence by proposing the evaluation of the walkability premium in a new context. We use multigroup structural equation models to evaluate the direct and indirect effects on low-income neighborhoods in two Brazilian metropolitan cities, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The walkability perception is modeled, mediating the impact of the built urban environment elements on real estate pricing. The results confirm that we can expect a premium for walkability investments, even in poor neighborhoods under non-ideal conditions for walking, and this result is invariant between cities. The effects of the built environment on the real estate price are mediated by latent perceptions, showing the importance of incorporating subjective measures when assessing the walkability premium. Additionally, Latin American cities' socioeconomic and environmental conditions provide new interpretations of the studied phenomenon, highlighting the importance of considering the local context.
Falls can lead to severe health loss including death. Past research has shown that falls are an important cause of death and disability worldwide. The Global Burden of Disease Study 2017 (GBD 2017) ...provides a comprehensive assessment of morbidity and mortality from falls.
Estimates for mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), incidence, prevalence, years lived with disability (YLDs) and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were produced for 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2017 for all ages using the GBD 2017 framework. Distributions of the bodily injury (eg, hip fracture) were estimated using hospital records.
Globally, the age-standardised incidence of falls was 2238 (1990-2532) per 100 000 in 2017, representing a decline of 3.7% (7.4 to 0.3) from 1990 to 2017. Age-standardised prevalence was 5186 (4622-5849) per 100 000 in 2017, representing a decline of 6.5% (7.6 to 5.4) from 1990 to 2017. Age-standardised mortality rate was 9.2 (8.5-9.8) per 100 000 which equated to 695 771 (644 927-741 720) deaths in 2017. Globally, falls resulted in 16 688 088 (15 101 897-17 636 830) YLLs, 19 252 699 (13 725 429-26 140 433) YLDs and 35 940 787 (30 185 695-42 903 289) DALYs across all ages. The most common injury sustained by fall victims is fracture of patella, tibia or fibula, or ankle. Globally, age-specific YLD rates increased with age.
This study shows that the burden of falls is substantial. Investing in further research, fall prevention strategies and access to care is critical.
Portopulmonary hypertension syndrome (PPHS) is a complication of portal hypertension where the substrate is micro-vessel lesions which are indicative of plexogenic arteriopathy. PPHS has not been ...linked to pulmonary schistosomiasis. We report, to the best of our knowledge for the first time, a case of PPHS associated with schistosomiasis mansoni.

The contraction of lowland forests throughout Europe began in remote times and then intensified strongly with land reclamation by agriculture and urbanization during the first half of the last ...century. We present a map of the Floodplain Woods of Tuscany on a scale of 1:300,000 as a synthesis of that built at the scale of 1:10,000 and the methods used to obtain it. Nearly 90% of the patches contain habitats of concern to conservation, according to the Habitat Directive. The Tuscan Floodplain Woods remained prevalent in coastal areas, where some levels of protection are guaranteed by the presence of several protected areas, whereas they have practically vanished in the other parts of the regional territory. The resulting patches are very small and distant from each other, so only in-depth management of all potential floodplain forest areas, taking into consideration patches for their regeneration, can be useful to assure their conservation.
Acute myocardial infarct (MI) results in ischemia distal to lesions which puts heart
muscle at risk for reperfusion injury (RI). Neutrophils, platelets and complement
are putative mediators of RI. ...Recent advances in filtration technology provide
integrated neutrophil and platelet removal together with complement-attenuating
properties in a single blood-conditioning device. The present study characterizes
the properties of a blood-conditioning filter and describes its clinical effect when
used in conjunction with active hemoperfusion for acute MI.The filter reduces leukocytes by 99.9998 ± 0.0002%
(p<0.0001) and platelets by 99.9934 ± 0.0069%
(p<0.0001). Human plasma, derived from heparinized blood that was
‘conditioned’ by filtration, was studied using the Langendorff
isolated rabbit heart preparation. The deposition of membrane attack complex and the
resultant functional myocardial impairments reflected in hemodynamic and
biochemical measurements, including developed pressure, coronary blood flow,
lymph-derived myocardial creatine kinase (CK) are significantly attenuated by blood
conditioning. Integration of the blood-conditioning filter into an active
hemoperfusion system during primary percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty
(PTCA) for acute MI (n=8) did not delay the procedure or cause any
complications. Reperfusion of occluded coronary arteries with 300 cm3 of
conditioned blood led to significant improvement in echocardiographic global wall
motion scores (in standard deviations) following treatment (1.64 ± 0.18
to 1.45 ± 0.15, p=0.02).Initial reperfusion of totally occluded coronary arteries with conditioned blood
leads to acutely improved ventricular function. Collectively, these data provide a
strong indication for continued investigation of conditioned blood reperfusion in
angioplasty following acute MI for the long-term effect upon recovery of salvagable myocardium.

The muon collider represents one of the most promising solutions for a future machine exploring the high energy frontier, but several challenges due to the 2.2 μsec muon lifetime at rest have to be ...carefully considered. The LEMMA project is investigating the possibility of producing low emittance muon/antimuon pairs from the e+e− annihilation process at threshold energy, resulting in small transverse emittance beams without any additional beam cooling. However most of the measurements available are performed at higher s values. It is therefore necessary to measure muons production in positron annihilation at threshold energy and compare the experimental results with the predictions in this specific energy regime. Apart from being a topic of physical interest by itself, these near to threshold measurements can have a sizeable impact on the estimation of the ultimate luminosity achievable in a muon collider with the LEMMA injection scheme.
Aedes albopictus was discovered in Los Angeles, California, in June 2001 in a maritime cargo container from China containing a shipment of a commercial plant product known as "Lucky Bamboo" (Dracaena ...spp.). To keep the plants alive during the ocean transit, they were shipped in 5-8 cm of water, providing an excellent habitat for Ae. albopictus. Mosquito infestations were subsequently detected at 15 nursery distributors of Dracaena in 2 northern and 4 southern California counties. The distribution of the Ae. albopictus infestations was limited to the vicinity of those nursery distributors with documented infestations. Infestations persisted for more than 5 months near some of the nurseries, and eggs were found in ovitraps until mid-November 2001 up to 1,000 m from the original infestation sites. Overwintering Ae. albopictus populations were discovered in April, July, and August 2002 at original infestation sites in Chino, San Bernardino County, and Monterey Park and Rowland Heights, Los Angeles County, respectively. Specimens were found at some sites of overwintering populations until October 2002.
Within the framework of structural dynamics, the article deals with the problem ofdetermining at a given moment the probability density function of certain quantities of interest, based on the ...uncertainties about the initial data, the structure characteristics and the applied loads. The proposed method uses the so-called principle of preservation of probability, and leads towriting a linear partial differential equation for any quantity whose probability density function hasto be determined.
