This work describes a color Vision-based System intended to perform stable autonomous driving on unmarked roads. Accordingly, this implies the development of an accurate road surface detection system ...that ensures vehicle stability. Although this topic has already been documented in the technical literature by different research groups, the vast majority of the already existing Intelligent Transportation Systems are devoted to assisted driving of vehicles on marked extra urban roads and highways. The complete system was tested on the BABIECA prototype vehicle, which was autonomously driven for hundred of kilometers accomplishing different navigation missions on a private circuit that emulates an urban quarter. During the tests, the navigation system demonstrated its robustness with regard to shadows, road texture, and weather and changing illumination conditions.
In this paper we describe a localization and local communication system which allows situated agents to communicate locally, obtaining at the same time both the range and the bearing of the emitter ...without the need of any centralized control or any external reference. The system relies on infrared communications with frequency modulation and is composed of two interconnected modules for data and power measurement. Thanks to the open hardware license under which it is released, the research community can easily replicate the system at a low cost and/or adapt it for applications in sensor networks and in robotics.
Interpretability is acknowledged as one of the most appreciated advantages of fuzzy systems in many applications, especially in those with high human interaction where it actually becomes a strong ...requirement. However, it is important to remark that there is a somehow misleading but widely extended belief, even in part of the fuzzy community, regarding fuzzy systems as interpretable no matter how they were designed. Of course, we are aware the use of fuzzy logic favors the interpretability of designed models. Thanks to their semantic expressivity, close to natural language, fuzzy variables and rules can be used to formalize linguistic propositions which are likely to be easily understandood by human beings. Obviously, this fact makes easier the knowledge extraction and representation tasks carried out when modeling real-world complex systems. Notwithstanding, fuzzy logic is not enough by itself to guarantee the interpretability of the final model. As it is thoroughly illustrated in this special issue, achieving interpretable fuzzy systems is a matter of careful design because fuzzy systems cannot be deemed as interpretable
per se. Thus, several constraints have to be imposed along the whole design process with the aim of producing really interpretable fuzzy systems, in the sense that every element of the whole system may be checked and understood by a human being. Otherwise, fuzzy systems may even become black-boxes.
The term Soft Computing was coined by L.A. Zadeh in the early 90’s. Since that time many researchers have tried to define it considering different approaches: main constituents, properties, ...abilities, etc. In addition, the term Computational Intelligence has also gained popularity having a somehow quite close meaning to that of Soft Computing. The central idea of this paper is to present, analyze, compare and discuss a few of the definitions that can be found on literature; not trying to find the best but to offer the reader arguments to make his/her own decision.
The idea of computable aggregation operators was introduced as a generalization of aggregation operators, allowing the replacement of the mathematical function usually considered for aggregation, by ...a program that performs the aggregation process. There are different reasons to justify this extension. One of them is the interest in exploring some computational properties not directly related to the aggregation itself but to its implementation (complexity, recursivity, parallelisation, etc). Another reason, the one driving to the present paper, is the need to define a framework where the quite common process of first sampling (over a large data set) and then aggregating the sample, could be analysed as a formal aggregation process. This process does not match with the idea of an aggregation function, due to its non-deterministic nature, but could easily be adapted to that of a (non-deterministic) computable aggregation. The idea of non-deterministic aggregation requires the extension of the concept of monotonicity (a key aspect of aggregation operators) to this new framework. The present paper will explore this kind of non-deterministic aggregation processes, first from an empirical point of view and then in terms of populations, adapting the idea of monotonicity to both of them and finally defining a common framework for its analysis.
The present paper extends some previous works studying automorphisms in type-2 fuzzy sets. The framework for the analysis is the set of convex and normal functions from 0,1 to 0,1 (fuzzy truth ...values). The paper concentrates on those automorphisms that, in this framework, leave the constant function 1 fixed. This function is quite important since it defines the boundary between the functions that represent “TRUE” (increasing functions) and those that represent “FALSE” (decreasing functions), being at the same time the only normal function that is simultaneously increasing and decreasing. While C.L. Walker, E.A. Walker and J. Harding introduced in 2008 a family of functions leaving the constant function 1 fixed, the main goal of this paper is to prove that the functions of that family are in fact automorphisms, and moreover, that they are the only automorphisms (in the mentioned set of convex and normal functions from 0,1 to 0,1) that preserve the function 1.
The XXI century home should be a digital habitat, a connected residence, but at the same time it should be involved in sustainability and the environment. The location of new technologies at home, ...and its acceptance by the user, requires, among other actions, a significant diffusion and activity to be undertaken. This work proposes the development of a Smart House network designed for its integration into a sustainable and bioclimatic solar house. The paper focuses on a specific aspect of the house design, the control system bus, developed for the management of the different parameters, variables, sensors and actuators which coexist at home. Finally, the system has been installed in a laboratory bioclimatic house. Environmental variable experiments based on the control of passive elements, such as phase shift gels, are presented. Experimental results show that the system is able to benefit from the bioclimatic elements in the house by taking into account the user preferences.
In a general sense, entropy is a measure of disorder. When adapted to information theory, the considered disorder is mostly related to information uncertainty, and in particular to randomness. ...Finally, when applied to fuzzy sets, this disorder is interpreted also in terms of uncertainty, but now the uncer-tainty relates to fuzziness. Consequently the fuzzy entropy of a fuzzy set defines how fuzzy is the set. Since its introduction, different approaches to fuzzy entropy has been considered. Those approaches usually measure the distance from the considered fuzzy set, to a minimum entropy set. In general, the minimum entropy set is a crisp set, but when analysing fuzzy entropy in the different extensions of fuzzy sets (interval valued, intuitionistic, type-2 and so on) this is not always the case. The present paper will concentrate on Interval Valued Fuzzy Sets, considering the different definitions of entropy that has been introduced, and analysing them in terms of the set used for comparison and the way to measure the distance. As a result, a certain ordering among the considered measures will be achieved.
Interpretability is a highly valued capability of fuzzy systems that turns essential when dealing with human interaction. Precise fuzzy modeling prioritizes performance at the cost of harming ...interpretability. Fuzzy Inference-grams (Fingrams) permit the graphical representation of fuzzy systems facilitating their comprehension, analysis and interpretation at inference level. We enhance Fingrams to better represent and analyze precise fuzzy systems. A specific metric and new representations handle the particularities of such systems. A new visual artifact allows to discover the set of data instances not covered by a given fuzzy system. A novel visual representation allows to study in detail the elements that are involved in the inference of a single data instance. The potentials of the enhanced methodology are sketched by taking the Fuzzy Unordered Rule Induction Algorithm (FURIA) as an illustrative example of precise fuzzy system. For instance, a highly valuable representation is obtained for the stretching mechanism of FURIA, thus facilitating its comprehensibility.
