This study documents that book equity of U.S. firms has decreased dramatically over time and such decrease is systematic across various industries and firm size. Our analysis shows that intangible ...capital investment explains a significant portion of the decrease in book equity even after controlling for concurrent effect of leverage and profitability on book equity, and the effect of intangible capital investment on book equity increased in recent years. Further analysis shows that intangible capital contributes to decrease in book equity mostly through the channel of changing firm characteristics rather than changing sensitivity over time. Our findings suggest that investors must incorporate the effect of intangible capital investment into their valuation analysis, as indexes or investment strategies relying on indicators constructed by book equity may be biased and misleading.
Abstract
Background
Lanthanum (La) is a rare earth element that can influence plant growth and development. However, the effect of La on growth, yield formation and 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2-AP, a key ...compound responsible for the aroma of rice) biosynthesis in aromatic rice (
Oryza sativa
L. subsp.
japonica
Kato) has not been reported. Therefore, the present study investigated the effects of La on growth, photosynthesis, yield formation and 2-AP biosynthesis in aromatic rice through three experiments.
Results
Two pot experiments and a two-year field trial were conducted with different rates of La application (20–120 LaCl
3
mg kg
−1
and 12 kg ha
−1
LaCl
3
), and treatments without La application were used as controls. The results showed that the application of LaCl

greatly increased the 2-AP content (by 6.45–43.03%) in aromatic rice seedlings and mature grains compared with the control. The La treatments also increased the chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate and total aboveground biomass of rice seedlings. Higher antioxidant enzyme (superoxide, peroxidase, and catalase) activity was detected in the La treatments than in the control. The La treatments also increased the grain yield, grain number per panicle and seed-setting rate of aromatic rice relative to the control. Moreover, the grain proline and γ-aminobutyric acid contents and the activity of betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase significantly decreased under the La treatment. The application of La to soil enhanced the activity of proline dehydrogenase by 20.62–56.95%.
Conclusions
La improved the growth, yield formation and 2-AP content of aromatic rice and enhanced 2-AP biosynthesis by increasing the conversion of proline to 2-AP and decreasing the conversion of GABald to GABA.

Procyanidins is a polyphenolic compound with multiple properties. However, the application of exogenous procyanidins in crops has not been reported. Aromatic rice is a high-quality rice with a ...special aroma and popular with consumers. The 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2-AP) is a key compound of aromatic rice aroma. In the current study, aromatic rice plants were sprayed with procyanidins solutions at 0.25 (Pr0.25), 0.50 (Pr0.50), 1.00 (Pr1.00), 2.00 (Pr2.00) g L.sup.-1, respectively and treatment sprayed with distilled water was taken as control (CK). The effects of exogenous procyanidins on growth and 2-AP biosynthesis of aromatic rice plants were explored. Compared with CK, Pr1.00 and Pr2.00 treatments significantly increased 2-AP content by 16.67% and 37.68%, respectively. Higher proline, 1-pyrroline-5-carboxylic acid (P5C), 1-pyrroline, methylglyoxal contents, and lower gamma- aminobutyric acid (GABA) content were recorded in Pr1.00 and Pr2.00 treatments than CK. Compared with CK, Pr1.00 and Pr2.00 treatments significantly improved the activities of P5CS and OAT and diminished the activity of BADH. Furthermore, compared with CK, Pr1.00 and Pr2.00 treatments significantly up-regulated the transcript levels of P5CS2, P5CR, OAT, DAO4 and down-regulated the transcript levels of BADH2. Exogenous procyanidins had no substantial effects on plant height, stem diameter, fresh weight, and dry weight of aromatic rice plants. In conclusion, our findings reported the increment of 2-AP content in aromatic rice under exogenous procyanidins. Our results indicated that the application of exogenous procyanidins enhanced 2-AP biosynthesis by improving proline biosynthesis and inhibiting GABA formation.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of sodium selenate (15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, and 105 mg kg
) on the germination and seedling growth of Changnongjing 1 rice (Oryza sativa L.) at 25 ...°C and 30 °C. Low selenate concentrations induced shorter and more uniform germination periods than did ultrapure water at both temperatures. Seedlings primed with low selenate concentrations were superior to those primed with ultrapure water in terms of plant height, fresh weight, dry matter accumulation, and soluble carbohydrate and protein contents. Lower selenate concentrations (15-75 mg kg
) induced higher chlorophyll and phenol contents in seedlings than did ultrapure water. Lower selenate concentrations also increased the superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) contents in seedlings and significantly decreased the stress-related malondialdehyde (MDA) content compared to ultrapure water. In conclusion, rice seedling germination and growth were promoted by priming with low selenate concentrations (15-75 mg kg
) but inhibited by priming with high selenate concentrations (90-105 mg kg
).
Aerosol optical depth (AOD) data derived from satellite products have been widely used to estimate fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations. However, existing approaches to estimate PM2.5 ...concentrations are invariably limited by the availability of AOD data, which can be missing over large areas due to satellite measurements being obstructed by, for example, clouds, snow cover or high concentrations of air pollution. In this study, we addressed this shortcoming by developing a novel method for determining PM2.5 concentrations with high spatial coverage by integrating AOD-based estimations and smartphone photograph-based estimations. We first developed a multiple-input fuzzy neural network (MIFNN) model to measure PM2.5 concentrations from smartphone photographs. We then designed an ensemble learning model (AutoELM) to determine PM2.5 concentrations based on the Collection-6 Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction AOD product. The R2 values of the MIFNN model and AutoELM model are 0.85 and 0.80, respectively, which are superior to those of other state-of-the-art models. Subsequently, we used crowdsourced smartphone photographs obtained from social media to validate the transferability of the MIFNN model, which we then applied to generate smartphone photograph-based estimates of PM2.5 concentrations. These estimates were fused with AOD-based estimates to generate a new PM2.5 distribution product with broader coverage than existing products, equating to an average increase of 12% in map coverage of PM2.5 concentrations, which grows to an impressive 25% increase in map coverage in densely populated areas. Our findings indicate that the robust estimation accuracy of the ensemble learning model is due to its detection of nonlinear correlations and high-order interactions. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate that the synergy of smartphone photograph-based estimations and AOD-based estimations generates significantly greater spatial coverage of PM2.5 distribution than AOD-based estimations alone, especially in densely populated areas where more smartphone photographs are available.
Abstract
Light-induced halide segregation constrains the photovoltaic performance and stability of wide-bandgap perovskite solar cells and tandem cells. The implementation of an intermixed ...two-dimensional/three-dimensional heterostructure via solution post-treatment is a typical strategy to improve the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells. However, owing to the composition-dependent sensitivity of surface reconstruction, the conventional solution post-treatment is suboptimal for methylammonium-free and cesium/bromide-enriched wide-bandgap PSCs. To address this, we develop a generic three-dimensional to two-dimensional perovskite conversion approach to realize a preferential growth of wider dimensionality (n ≥ 2) atop wide-bandgap perovskite layers (1.78 eV). This technique involves depositing a well-defined MAPbI

thin layer through a vapor-assisted two-step process, followed by its conversion into a two-dimensional structure. Such a two-dimensional/three-dimensional heterostructure enables suppressed light-induced halide segregation, reduced non-radiative interfacial recombination, and facilitated charge extraction. The wide-bandgap perovskite solar cells demonstrate a champion power conversion efficiency of 19.6% and an open-circuit voltage of 1.32 V. By integrating with the thermal-stable FAPb

Conclusion
The comprehensive studies aimed at the interplay between the quantum confinement effect and device statistical variability among process design of experiments for sub-5 nm NSTs have been ...presented and analyzed through strictly calibrated TCAD simulation platform for the first time. The impact of quantum confinement variation on the key performance parameters of NSTs with different channel geometry structures also have been studied. It is found that the NSTs with the optimized nanosheet thickness of approximate 4 nm have the best key figures of merit. After considering the interplay between the quantum confinement and statistical variability, MGG as the dominant statistical variability source brings the largest threshold voltage fluctuation and the MGG-induced variability can be suppressed with the average grain size reduction, but SER can also cause the comparable threshold voltage variation for 3 nm thick NSTs mainly due to the strong quantum confinement variation. Meanwhile the SER-induced variability can also be suppressed by the uniform smooth nanosheet edges.
Building function labelling plays an important role in understanding human activities inside buildings. This study develops a method of function label classification using integrated features derived ...from remote sensing and crowdsensing data with an extreme gradient boosting tree (XGBoost). The classification framework is verified based on a dataset from Shenzhen, China. An extended label system for six building types (residential, commercial, office, industrial, public facilities, and others) was applied, and various social functions were considered. The overall classification accuracies were 88.15% (kappa index = 0.72) and 85.56% (kappa index = 0.69). The importance of features was evaluated using the occurrence frequency of features at decision nodes. In the six-category classification system, the basic building attributes (22.99%) and POIs (46.74%) contributed most to the classification process; moreover, the building footprint (7.40%) and distance to roads (11.76%) also made notable contributions. The result shows that it is feasible to extract building environments from POI labels and building footprint geometry with a dimensional reduction model using an autoencoder. Additionally, crowdsensing data (e.g., POI and distance to roads) will become increasingly important as classification tasks become more complicated and the importance of basic building attributes declines.
The commonly-used superstrate configuration (depositing front subcell first and then depositing back subcell) in all-perovskite tandem solar cells is disadvantageous for long-term stability due to ...oxidizable narrow-bandgap perovskite assembled last and easily exposable to air. Here we reverse the processing order and demonstrate all-perovskite tandems in a substrate configuration (depositing back subcell first and then depositing front subcell) to bury oxidizable narrow-bandgap perovskite deep in the device stack. By using guanidinium tetrafluoroborate additive in wide-bandgap perovskite subcell, we achieve an efficiency of 25.3% for the substrate-configured all-perovskite tandem cells. The unencapsulated devices exhibit no performance degradation after storage in dry air for 1000 hours. The substrate configuration also widens the choice of flexible substrates: we achieve 24.1% and 20.3% efficient flexible all-perovskite tandem solar cells on copper-coated polyethylene naphthalene and copper metal foil, respectively. Substrate configuration offers a promising route to unleash the commercial potential of all-perovskite tandem solar cells.
Paclobutrazol is widely used in the agricultural field. This study investigated the effects of seed priming with different concentrations of paclobutrazol on seedling quality, 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline ...(2-AP, a key aroma component of fragrant rice) biosynthesis, and related physiological and biochemical indicators in fragrant rice seedlings.
The experiment is being conducted at the College of Agriculture, South China Agricultural University. In the experiment, three concentrations of paclobutrazol (Pac 1: 20 mg·L
; Pac 2: 40 mg·L
; Pac 3: 80 mg·L
) were used to initiate the treatment of fragrant rice seeds, while water treatment was used as a control (CK). The results showed that compared with CK, paclobutrazol treatment reduced plant height, increased stem diameter, and increased fresh and dry weight of aromatic rice seedlings. Moreover, paclobutrazol treatment also increased the seedlings' photosynthetic pigment content and net photosynthetic rate.
This study demonstrates that paclobutrazol primarily increases the content of proline by reducing the content of glutamate and down-regulating the expression of P5CS2, thereby promoting the conversion of proline to the aromatic substance 2-AP. Under the appropriate concentration of paclobutrazol (40 mg·L
~80 mg·L
), the seedling quality, stress resistance, and aroma of fragrant rice can be improved.
