Spaceborne NO2 column observations from two high‐resolution instruments, Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) on board Sentinel‐5 Precursor and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on Aura, ...reveal unprecedented NO2 decreases over China, South Korea, western Europe, and the United States as a result of public health measures enforced to contain the coronavirus disease outbreak (Covid‐19) in January–April 2020. The average NO2 column drop over all Chinese cities amounts to −40% relative to the same period in 2019 and reaches up to a factor of ~2 at heavily hit cities, for example, Wuhan, Jinan, while the decreases in western Europe and the United States are also significant (−20% to −38%). In contrast with this, although Iran is also strongly affected by the disease, the observations do not show evidence of lower emissions, reflecting more limited health measures.

Multicomponent reactions are a valuable tool for the synthesis of functional π-electron systems. Two different approaches can be taken into account for accessing the target structures. In the more ...conventional scaffold approach an already existing chromophore is coupled with other components to give a complex functional π-system. Here, electronically monotonous components can also be introduced, which may exert synergistic electronic effects within the novel compound. The more demanding chromophore concept generates a complete π-electron system and a scaffold concurrently. The latter approach is particularly stimulating for methodologists since π-systems might be accessible from simple starting materials. This review encompasses the advances in the preparation of functional π-electron systems via multicomponent processes during the past few years, based both on the scaffold and chromophore concepts. Besides the synthetic strategies the most important properties, i.e. redox potentials, absorption and emission maxima or fluorescence quantum yields, of the synthesized molecules are highlighted.
The Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGANv2.1) together with the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) meteorological fields were used to ...create a global emission data set of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) available on a monthly basis for the time period of 1980–2010. This data set, developed under the Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate project (MACC), is called MEGAN–MACC. The model estimated mean annual total BVOC emission of 760 Tg (C) yr−1 consisting of isoprene (70%), monoterpenes (11%), methanol (6%), acetone (3%), sesquiterpenes (2.5%) and other BVOC species each contributing less than 2%. Several sensitivity model runs were performed to study the impact of different model input and model settings on isoprene estimates and resulted in differences of up to ±17% of the reference isoprene total. A greater impact was observed for a sensitivity run applying parameterization of soil moisture deficit that led to a 50% reduction of isoprene emissions on a global scale, most significantly in specific regions of Africa, South America and Australia. MEGAN–MACC estimates are comparable to results of previous studies. More detailed comparison with other isoprene inventories indicated significant spatial and temporal differences between the data sets especially for Australia, Southeast Asia and South America. MEGAN–MACC estimates of isoprene, α-pinene and group of monoterpenes showed a reasonable agreement with surface flux measurements at sites located in tropical forests in the Amazon and Malaysia. The model was able to capture the seasonal variation of isoprene emissions in the Amazon forest.
The microscopic environment inside a metazoan organism is highly crowded. Whether individual cells can tailor their behavior to the limited space remains unclear. In this study, we found that cells ...measure the degree of spatial confinement by using their largest and stiffest organelle, the nucleus. Cell confinement below a resting nucleus size deforms the nucleus, which expands and stretches its envelope. This activates signaling to the actomyosin cortex via nuclear envelope stretch-sensitive proteins, up-regulating cell contractility. We established that the tailored contractile response constitutes a nuclear ruler-based signaling pathway involved in migratory cell behaviors. Cells rely on the nuclear ruler to modulate the motive force that enables their passage through restrictive pores in complex three-dimensional environments, a process relevant to cancer cell invasion, immune responses, and embryonic development.
This paper presents the recent version of the lunar laser ranging (LLR) analysis model at the Institut für Erdmessung (IfE), Leibniz Universität Hannover and highlights a few tests of Einstein's ...theory of gravitation using LLR data. Investigations related to a possible temporal variation of the gravitational constant, the equivalence principle, the PPN parameters β and γ as well as the geodetic precession were carried out. The LLR analysis model was updated by gravitational effects of the Sun and planets with the Moon as extended body. The higher-order gravitational interaction between Earth and Moon as well as effects of the solid Earth tides on the lunar motion were refined. The basis for the modeled lunar rotation is now a 2-layer core/mantle model according to the DE430 ephemeris. The validity of Einstein's theory was studied using this updated analysis model and an LLR data set from 1970 to January 2015. Within the estimated accuracies, no deviations from Einstein's theory are detected. A relative temporal variation of the gravitational constant is estimated as G˙/G0=(7.1±7.6)×10−14 yr−1, the test of the equivalence principle gives Δ(mg/mi)EM=(−3±5)×10−14 and the Nordtvedt parameter η=(−0.2±1.1)×10−4, the PPN-parameters β and γ are determined as β−1=(−4.5±5.6)×10−5 and γ−1=(−1.2±1.2)×10−4 and the geodetic precession is confirmed within 0.09%. The results for selected relativistic parameters are obtained by introducing constraints from an LLR solution without estimating relativistic quantities. The station coordinates are constrained for the estimation of G˙/G0, β and γ, the initial value of the core rotation vector is constrained to a reasonable model value for the estimation of G˙/G0 and geodetic precession. A constrained z-component of the initial lunar velocity is used for the estimation of the geodetic precession.
We present the first experimental realization of coherent Bragg scattering off a one-dimensional system-two strings of atoms strongly coupled to a single photonic mode-realized by trapping atoms in ...the evanescent field of a tapered optical fiber, which also guides the probe light. We report nearly 12% power reflection from strings containing only about 1000 cesium atoms, an enhancement of 2 orders of magnitude compared to reflection from randomly positioned atoms. This result paves the road towards collective strong coupling in 1D atom-photon systems. Our approach also allows for a straightforward fiber connection between several distant 1D atomic crystals.
Conspectus Crystallization of polymeric materials under nanoscopic confinement is highly relevant for nanotechnology applications. When a polymer is confined within rigid nanoporous anodic aluminum ...oxide (AAO) templates, the crystallization behavior experiences dramatic changes as the pore size is reduced, including nucleation mechanism, crystal orientation, crystallization kinetics, and polymorphic transition, etc. As an experimental prerequisite, exhaustive cleaning procedures after infiltrations of polymers in AAO pores must be performed to ensure producing an ensemble of isolated polymer-filled nanopores. Layers of residual polymers on the AAO surface percolate nanopores and lead to the so-called “fractionated crystallization”, i.e., multiple crystallization peaks during cooling. Because the density of isolated nanopores in a typical AAO template exceeds the density of heterogeneities in bulk polymers, the majority of nanopores will be heterogeneity-free. This means that the nucleation will proceed by surface or homogeneous nucleation. As a consequence, a very large supercooling is necessary for crystallization, and its kinetics is reduced to a first-order process that is dominated by nucleation. Self-nucleation is a powerful method to exponentially increase nucleation density. However, when the diameter of the nanopores is lower than a critical value, confinement prevents the possibility to self-nucleate the material. Because of the anisotropic nature of AAO pores, polymer crystals inside AAO also exhibit anisotropy, which is determined by thermodynamic stability and kinetic selection rules. For low molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with extended chain crystals, the orientation of polymer crystals changes from the “chain perpendicular to” to the “chain parallel to” the AAO pore axis, when the diameter of AAO decreases to the contour length of the PEO, indicating the effect of thermodynamic stability. When the thermodynamic requirement is satisfied, the orientation is determined by kinetics including crystal growth direction, nucleation, and crystal growth rate. An orientation diagram has been established for the PEO/AAO system, considering the cooling condition and pore size. The interfacial polymer layer has different physical properties as compared to the bulk. In poly(l-lactic acid), the relationship between the segmental mobility of the interfacial layer and crystallization rate is established. For the investigation of polymorphic transition of poly(butane-1), the results indicate that a 12 nm interfacial layer hinders the transition of Form II to Form I. Block and random copolymers have also been infiltrated into AAO nanopores, and their crystallization behavior is analogously affected as pore size is reduced.
Piezo receptors convert mechanical forces into electrical signals. In mammals, they play important roles in basic physiological functions including proprioception, sensation of touch, and vascular ...development. However, basic receptor properties like the gating mechanism, the interaction with extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, and the response to mechanical stimulation, remain poorly understood. Here, we establish an atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based assay to mechanically stimulate Piezo1 receptors in living animal cells, while monitoring receptor activation in real-time using functional calcium imaging. Our experiments show that in the absence of ECM proteins Piezo1 receptors are relatively insensitive to mechanical forces pushing the cellular membrane, whereas they can hardly be activated by mechanically pulling the membrane. Yet, if conjugated with Matrigel, a mix of ECM proteins, the receptors become sensitized. Thereby, forces pulling the cellular membrane activate the receptor much more efficiently compared to pushing forces. Finally, we found that collagen IV, a component of the basal lamina, which forms a cohesive network and mechanical connection between cells, sensitizes Piezo1 receptors to mechanical pulling.
While most countries imposed a lockdown in response to the first wave of COVID-19 infections, Sweden did not. To quantify the lockdown effect, we approximate a counterfactual lockdown scenario for ...Sweden through the outcome in a synthetic control unit. We find, first, that a 9-week lockdown in the first half of 2020 would have reduced infections and deaths by about 75% and 38%, respectively. Second, the lockdown effect starts to materialize with a delay of 3-4 weeks only. Third, the actual adjustment of mobility patterns in Sweden suggests there has been substantial voluntary social restraint, although the adjustment was less strong than under the lockdown scenario. Lastly, we find that a lockdown would not have caused much additional output loss.

The existence of a “memory” of the previous crystalline state, which survives melting and enhances recrystallization kinetics by a self-nucleation process, is well-known in polymer crystallization ...studies. Despite being extensively investigated, since the early days of polymer crystallization studies, a complete understanding of melt memory effects is still lacking. In particular, the exact constitution of self-nuclei is still under debate. In this Perspective, we provide a comprehensive and critical overview of melt memory effects in polymer crystallization. After the phenomenology of the process and some key concepts are introduced, the main experimental results of the past decades are summarized. Analogies and discrepancies of the melt memory characteristics of different polymeric systems are highlighted. Based on this background, the most significant interpretations and theories of melt memory effects are described, underlining that different interpretations may apply to various specific cases. Recent insights into self-nucleation, gained thanks to a multitechnique approach (combining calorimetry, rheology, and infrared and dielectric spectroscopies), are presented. The role of intra/interchain segmental contacts in the strength of melt memory effects, and the differences between homopolymers and copolymers behavior, are discussed. Finally, we identify areas where further research in the field is needed to shed light on the long-standing questions regarding the origin of melt memory effects in semicrystalline polymers.
