Abstract
We performed the largest and most homogeneous spectroscopic survey of field RR Lyraes (RRLs). We secured ≈6300 high-resolution (HR,
R
∼ 35,000) spectra for 143 RRLs (111 fundamental, RRab; ...32 first-overtone, RRc). The atmospheric parameters were estimated by using the traditional approach and the iron abundances were measured by using an LTE line analysis. The resulting iron distribution shows a well-defined metal-rich tail approaching solar iron abundance. This suggests that field RRLs experienced a complex chemical enrichment in the early halo formation. We used these data to develop a new calibration of the Δ
S
method. This diagnostic, based on the equivalent widths of Ca
ii
K and three Balmer (H
δ
,
γ
,
β
) lines, traces the metallicity of RRLs. For the first time, the new empirical calibration: (i) includes spectra collected over the entire pulsation cycle; (ii) includes RRc variables; (iii) relies on spectroscopic calibrators covering more than three dex in iron abundance; and (iv) provides independent calibrations based on one/two/three Balmer lines. The new calibrations were applied to a data set of both SEGUE-SDSS and degraded HR spectra totalling 6451 low-resolution (
R
∼ 2000) spectra for 5001 RRLs (3439 RRab, 1562 RRc). This resulted in an iron distribution with a median
η
= −1.55 ± 0.01 and
σ
= 0.51 dex, in good agreement with literature values. We also found that RRc are 0.10 dex more metal-poor than RRab variables, and have a distribution with a smoother metal-poor tail. This finding supports theoretical prescriptions suggesting a steady decrease in the RRc number when moving from metal-poor to metal-rich stellar environments.
We present photometric redshifts for an uniquely large and deep sample of 522286 objects with i'_{AB}<25 in the Canada-France Legacy Survey ``Deep Survey'' fields, which cover a total effective area ...of 3.2 deg^2. We use 3241 spectroscopic redshifts with 0<z<5 from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey as a calibration to derive these photometric redshifts. We devise a robust calibration method which removes systematic trends in the photometric redshifts and significantly reduces the fraction of catastrophic errors. We use our unique spectroscopic sample to present a detailed assessment of the robustness of the photometric redshift sample. For a sample selected at i'_{AB}<24, we reach a redshift accuracy of \sigma_{\Delta z/(1+z)}=0.037 with \eta=3.7% of catastrophic error. The reliability of our photometric redshifts is lower for fainter objects: we find \sigma_{\Delta z/(1+z)}=0.029, 0.043 and \eta=1.7%, 5.4% for samples selected at i'_{AB}=17.5-22.5 and 22.5-24 respectively. We find that the photometric redshifts of starburst galaxies in our sample are less reliable: although these galaxies represent only 18% of the spectroscopic sample they are responsible for 54% of the catastrophic errors. We find an excellent agreement between the photometric and the VVDS spectroscopic redshift distributions at i'_{AB}<24. Finally, we compare the redshift distributions of i' selected galaxies on the four CFHTLS deep fields, showing that cosmic variance is already present on fields of 0.8 deg^2.
We measure the evolution of clustering for galaxies with different spectral types from 6495 galaxies with 17.5<=I_AB<=24 and measured spectroscopic redshift in the first epoch VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey. ...We classify our sample into 4 classes, based on the fit of well-defined galaxy spectral energy distributions on observed multi-color data. We measure the projected function wp(rp) and estimate the best-fit parameters for a power-law real-space correlation function. We find the clustering of early-spectral-type galaxies to be markedly stronger than that of late-type galaxies at all redshifts up to z<=1.2. At z~0.8, early-type galaxies display a correlation length r_0=4.8+/-0.9h^{-1}Mpc, while late types have r_0=2.5+/-0.4h^{-1}Mpc. The clustering of these objects increases up to r_0=3.42+/-0.7h^{-1}Mpc for z~1.4. The relative bias between early- and late-type galaxies within our magnitude-limited survey remains approximately constant with b~1.7-1.8 from z~=0.2 up to z~=1, with indications for a decrease at z>1.2, due to the growth in clustering of the star-forming population. We find similar results when splitting the sample into `red' and `blue' galaxies using the observed color bi-modality. When compared to the expected linear growth of mass fluctuations, a natural interpretation of these observations is that: (a) the assembly of massive early type galaxies is already mostly complete in the densest dark matter halos at z~=1; (b) luminous late-type galaxies are located in higher-density, more clustered regions of the Universe at z~=1.5 than at present, indicating that star formation activity is progressively increasing, going back in time, in the higher-density peaks that today are mostly dominated by old galaxies.
ABSTRACT
We present the flux tables of the spectrophotometric standard stars (SPSS) used to calibrate in flux the Gaia DR2 and (E)DR3 data releases. The latest SPSS grid version contains 112 stars, ...whose flux tables agree to better than 1 per cent with the CALSPEC spectra of 11 flux standards for the calibration of the Hubble Space Telescope. The synthetic magnitudes computed on the SPSS spectra also agree to better than 1 per cent with the Landolt magnitudes of 37 stars in common. The typical spreads in both comparisons are of the order of 1 per cent. These uncertainties already meet the initial requirements for the Gaia SPSS project, but further improvements are expected in the next SPSS versions, that will be used to calibrate future Gaia releases. We complement the SPSS flux tables with literature spectra of 60 additional stars that did not pass all the criteria to be SPSS, the Passband Validation Library (PVL). The PVL contains stars of extreme spectral types, such as bright O and B stars and late M stars and brown dwarfs, and was useful to investigate systematic effects in the previous Gaia DR2 release and to minimize them in the EDR3 one. The PVL literature spectra are recalibrated as accurately as possible on to the SPSS reference scale, so that the two sets together can be used in a variety of validation and comparison studies.
We measure the evolution of the galaxy Luminosity Function as a function of large-scale environment up to z=1.5 from the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) first epoch data. The 3D galaxy density field is ...reconstructed using a sample of 6582 galaxies with 17.5 < I_{AB} < 24 and measured spectroscopic redshifts. We split the sample in four redshift bins up to z=1.5 and in under-dense and over-dense environments according to the average density contrast \delta=0. There is a strong dependence of the Luminosity Function (LF) with large-scale environment up to z=1.2: the LF shape is observed to have a steeper slope in under-dense environments. We find a continuous brightening of \Delta M* ~0.6 mag from z=0.25 to z=1.5 both in under-dense and over-dense environments. The rest-frame B-band luminosity density continuously increases in under-dense environments from z=0.25 to z=1.5 whereas its evolution in over-dense environments presents a peak at z~0.9. We interpret the peak by a complex interplay between the decrease of the star formation rate and the increasing fraction of galaxies at \delta>0 due to hierarchical growth of structures. As the environmental dependency of the LF shape is already present at least up to z=1.2, we therefore conclude that either the shape of the LF is imprinted very early on in the life of the Universe, a `nature' process, or that `nurture' physical processes shaping up environment relation have already been efficient earlier than a look-back time corresponding to 30% of the current age of the Universe.
Abstract
The favorable confinement properties of negative-triangularity (NT) tokamak configurations were discovered in the TCV tokamak in the late 1990s and were documented over the two following ...decades, through investigations of predominantly electron-heated plasmas in limited topologies. The most recent experimental campaign in TCV has marked a leap forward, characterized by the development of a variety of diverted NT shapes that are robustly stable with basic Ohmic heating. The application of auxiliary heating, directed now at both electrons and ions (using electron-cyclotron resonance heating as well as neutral-beam injection), has enabled the achievement of record performances for L-mode plasmas, with normalized
β
values reaching 2.8 transiently (as well as 2 in steady state, but reverting to a limited configuration) and with comparable ion and electron temperatures. The systematic confinement enhancement with NT is confirmed in these experiments. The L-mode existence space is broader than at positive triangularity, with only sporadic transitions to H-mode observed up to 1.4 MW heating power regardless of the magnetic-field-gradient direction relative to the X-point. These experiments are planned to be continued with even higher power following a heating-source upgrade.

We investigate the properties of the mixed-mode (RRd) RR Lyrae (RRL) variables in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy by using B- and V-band time series collected over 24 yr. We ...compare the properties of the RRds in Fornax with those in the Magellanic Clouds and in nearby dSphs, with special focus on Sculptor. We found that the ratio of RRds over the total number of RRLs decreases with metallicity. Typically, dSphs have very few RRds with 0.49≲ P0 ≲0.53 d, but Fornax fills this period gap in the Petersen diagram (ratio between first overtone over fundamental period versus fundamental period). We also found that the distribution in the Petersen diagram of Fornax RRds is similar to Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) RRds, thus suggesting that their old stars have a similar metallicity distribution. We introduce the Period–Amplitude RatioS diagram, a new pulsation diagnostics independent of distance and reddening. We found that Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) RRds in this plane are distributed along a short- and a long-period sequence that we identified as the metal-rich and the metal-poor component. These two groups are also clearly separated in the Petersen and Bailey (luminosity amplitude versus logarithmic period) diagrams. This circumstantial evidence indicates that the two groups have different evolutionary properties. All the pulsation diagnostics adopted in this investigation suggest that old stellar populations in Fornax and Sculptor dSphs underwent different chemical enrichment histories. Fornax RRds are similar to SMC RRds, while Sculptor RRds are more similar to the metal-rich component of the LMC RRds.
The VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) is an on-going program to map the evolution of galaxies, large scale structures and AGNs from the redshift measurement of more than 100000 objects down to a magnitude ...IAB=24, in combination with a multi-wavelength dataset from radio to X-rays. We present here the first results obtained from more than 20000 spectra. Dedicated effort has been invested to successfully enter the “redshift desert” 1.5<z<3, by producing high S/N galaxy templates in the rest wavelength domain probed by VIMOS. We have produced the luminosity function (LF) of galaxies for the first time out to IAB=24, and the evolution of the LF for each morphological type is clearly established, indicating that most of the LF evolution is concentrated in the later types. We present for the first time the 3D spatial distribution of a well controlled sample of faint galaxies, and show that significant clustering is detected out to z~1.5.

The X‐ray structure of an anaerobically produced, mutated ...(Fe2S2‐(IscS‐IscUD35A))2 complex reveals a cluster coordinated by three IscU cysteines and the IscS active cysteine (see picture). In air‐exposed crystals the cluster is oxidized to an Fe2S–S center; D35 is essential for complex dissociation.
