After the successful launching of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity satellite in November 2009, continuous streams of data started to be regularly downloaded and made available to be processed. ...The first six months of operation were fully dedicated to the In-Orbit Commissioning Phase, with an intense activity aimed at bringing the satellite and instrument into a fully operational condition. Concerning the payload Microwave Imaging Radiometer with Aperture Synthesis, it was fully characterized using specific orbits dedicated to check all instrument modes. The procedures, already defined during the on-ground characterization, were repeated so as to obtain realistic temperature characterization and updated internal calibration parameters. External calibration maneuvers were tested for the first time and provided absolute instrument calibration, as well as corrections to internal calibration data. Overall, performance parameters, such as stability, radiometric sensitivity and radiometric accuracy were evaluated. The main results of this activity are presented in this paper, showing that the instrument delivers stable and well-calibrated data thanks to the combination of external and internal calibration and to an accurate thermal characterization. Finally, the quality of the visibility calibration is demonstrated by producing brightness temperature images in the alias-free field of view using standard inversion techniques. Images of ocean, ice, and land are given as examples.

The error characterization of satellite observations is crucial for blending observations from multiple platforms into a unique dataset and for assimilating them into numerical weather prediction ...models. In the last years, the triple collocation (TC) technique has been widely used to assess the quality of many geophysical variables acquired with different instruments and at different scales. This paper presents a new formulation of the triple collocation (Correlated Triple Collocation (CTC)) for the case of three datasets that resolve similar spatial scales, with two of them being error-correlated datasets. Besides, the formulation is designed to ensure fast convergence of the error estimators. This approach is of special interest in cases such that finding more than three datasets with uncorrelated errors is not possible and the amount of data is limited. First, a synthetic experiment has been carried out to assess the performance of CTC formulation. As an example of application, the error characterization of three collocated L-band brightness temperature (TB) measurements over land has been performed. Two of the datasets come from ESA (European Space Agency) SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission: one is the reconstructed TB from the operational L1B v620 product, and the other is the reconstructed TB from the operational L1B v620 product resulting from application of an RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) mitigation technique, the nodal sampling (NS). The third is an independent dataset, the TB acquired by a NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) radiometer. Our analysis shows that the application of NS leads to TB error reduction with respect to the current version of SMOS TB in 80% of the points in the global map, with an average reduction of approximately 1 K over RFI-free regions and approximately 1.45 K over strongly RFI-contaminated areas.
This work compiles the doctoral theses presented at the Faculty of Law of the Central University of Madrid between 1847, the year in which the modern thesis was created in the Spanish university, and ...1914, expanding this second edition with the records of the graduates who achieved the degree of doctor in this same faculty in the immediately preceding period, 1845 to 1847, and in which the presentation of a doctoral thesis was not yet required; therefore, the total number of records in this edition is increased to 3,092, compared to the 3,073 of the previous edition. The catalogue is arranged chronologically, which makes it easier for the researcher to sequence the evolution of an important part of the country's legal scientific production, and the research trends of the Faculty in the period studied. The catalogue is accompanied by an extensive introduction which studies the legislation governing doctorates in liberal Spain and the methodology followed in compiling the catalogue. It closes with several appendices that complement the study: a table of the teaching staff of the doctoral courses (by course and onomastic), a table of the syllabuses in force over the almost seventy years covered by the work, and a graph of the theses presented by year. The final index of graduates facilitates immediate consultation of the catalogue.
