Thyroid cancer is a common endocrine malignancy with increasing incidence globally. Although most cases can be treated effectively, some cases are more aggressive and have a higher risk of mortality. ...Inhibiting RET and BRAF kinases has emerged as a potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment of thyroid cancer, particularly in cases of advanced or aggressive disease. However, the development of resistance mechanisms may limit the efficacy of these kinase inhibitors. Therefore, developing precise strategies to target thyroid cancer cell metabolism and overcome resistance is a critical area of research for advancing thyroid cancer treatment. In the field of cancer therapeutics, researchers have explored combinatorial strategies involving dual metabolic inhibition and metabolic inhibitors in combination with targeted therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy to overcome the challenge of metabolic plasticity. This review highlights the need for new therapeutic approaches for thyroid cancer and discusses promising metabolic inhibitors targeting thyroid cancer. It also discusses the challenges posed by metabolic plasticity in the development of effective strategies for targeting cancer cell metabolism and explores the potential advantages of combined metabolic targeting.
We evaluated the levels of heavy metals and arsenic (As) species in 11 different types of seaweed collected from major coastal cities in Korea. The concentration ranges of heavy metals in the seaweed ...were as follows: cadmium (0.023–0.232 mg/kg fresh weight fw), and lead (0.025–0.222 mg/kg fw), with most meeting international regulations for edible seaweeds. The amount of total As, however, was high, ranging from 1.020 to 20.525 mg/kg fw. Especially in the case of Sargassum seaweed, the fraction of inorganic As, including arsenate (As V) and arsenate (As III), which have potent toxicity, ranged from 5.198 to 16.867 mg/kg fw, while other seaweeds, such as Pyropia sp., Enteromorpha sp., Undaria sp., and Saccharina sp., predominantly contained a non-toxic organic As (i.d. arsenosugars). Multivariate analysis revealed that the Sargassum genus group had high levels of inorganic As. Sargassum seaweeds had a high fraction of inorganic As, but most of them are considered inedible seaweeds. Of these, Sargassum fusiforme (hijiki) is widely recognized as an edible seaweed, but the average daily intake is quite low based on statistical data from Asian countries and S. fusiforme is considered a safe food when eaten at the recommended daily intake.
Various strategies for combination therapy to overcome current limitations in cancer therapy have been actively investigated. Among them, simultaneous delivery of multiple drugs is a subject of high ...interest due to anticipated synergistic effect, but there have been difficulties in designing and developing effective nanomaterials for this purpose. In this work, dual‐pore coexisting hybrid porous silica nanoparticles are developed through Volmer–Weber growth pathway for efficient co‐delivery of gene and anticancer drug. Based on the different pore sizes (2–3 and 40–45 nm) and surface modifications of the core and branch domains, loading and controlled release of gene and drug are achieved by appropriate strategies for each environment. With excellent loading capacity and low cytotoxicity of the present platform, the combinational cancer therapy is successfully demonstrated against human cervical cancer cell line. Through a series of quantitative analyses, the excellent gene–chemo combinational therapeutic efficiency is successfully demonstrated. It is expected that the present nanoparticle will be applicable to various biomedical fields that require co‐delivery of small molecule and nucleic acid.
Dual‐pore coexisting branched silica nanoparticles are simply synthesized by the Volmer–Weber growth pathway, which consists of a positively charged core with a large pore for nucleic acid loading and a negatively charged branched with small pore for small molecule loading. The platform shows features of efficient loading and controlled release, and represents synergetic anticancer effect through gene–chemo therapy.
The Crab nebula is widely used as a polarization angle calibrator for single-dish radio observations because of its brightness, high degree of linear polarization, and well-known polarization angle ...over a wide frequency range. However, the Crab nebula cannot be directly used as a polarization angle calibrator for single-dish observations with the Korean VLBI Network (KVN), because the beam size of the telescopes is smaller than the size of the nebula. To determine the polarization angle of the Crab nebula as seen by KVN, we use 3C 286, a compact polarized extragalactic radio source whose polarization angle is well-known, as a reference target. We observed both the Crab nebula and 3C 286 with the KVN from 2017 to 2021 and find that the polarization angles at the total intensity peak of the Crab nebula (equatorial coordinates (J2000) R.A. = 05h34m32.3804s and Dec = 22◦00′44.0982′′) are 154.2◦ ±0.3◦, 151.0◦ ±0.2◦, 150.0◦ ±1.0◦, and 151.3◦ ±1.1◦ at 22, 43, 86, and 94 GHz, respectively. We also find that the polarization angles at the pulsar position (RA = 05h34m31.971s and Dec = 22◦00′52.06′′) are 154.4◦ ±0.4◦, 150.7◦ ±0.4◦, and 149.0◦ ± 1.0◦ for the KVN at 22, 43, and 86 GHz. At 129 GHz, we suggest to use the values 149.0◦ ± 1.6◦ at the total intensity peak and 150.2◦ ± 2.0◦ at the pulsar position obtained with the Institute for Radio Astronomy in the Millimeter Range (IRAM) 30-meter Telescope. Based on our study, both positions within the Crab nebula can be used as polarization angle calibrators for the KVN single-dish observations.
Active surveillance (AS) is generally accepted as an alternative to immediate surgery for papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) measuring ≤1.0 cm (cT1a) without risk factors. This study investigated the ...clinicopathologic characteristics of PTCs measuring ≤2.0 cm without cervical lymph node metastasis (cT1N0) by tumor size group to assess the feasibility of AS for PTCs between 1.0 cm and 1.5 cm (cT1b≤1.5).
This study enrolled clinically T1N0 patients with preoperative ultrasonography information (n= 935) from a cohort of 1259 patients who underwent lobectomy and were finally diagnosed with PTC from June 2020 to March 2022.
The cT1b≤1.5 group (n = 171; 18.3 %) exhibited more lymphatic invasion and occult central lymph node (LN) metastasis with a higher metastatic LN ratio than the cT1a group (n = 719; 76.9 %). However, among patients aged 55 years or older, there were no significant differences in occult central LN metastasis and metastatic LN ratio between the cT1a, cT1b≤1.5, and cT1b>1.5 groups. Multivariate regression analyses revealed that occult central LN metastasis was associated with age, sex, tumor size, extrathyroidal extension, and lymphatic invasion in patients under 55, while in those aged 55 or older, it was associated only with age and lymphatic invasion.
For PTC patients aged 55 years or older with cT1b≤1.5, AS could be a viable option due to the absence of a significant relationship between tumor size and occult central LN.

Severe deformity of the thoracolumbar spine may cause difficulty in airway management during induction of anesthesia. Therefore, special attention must be devoted to patient safety.
A 65-year-old ...male with severe thoracolumbar kyphosis was scheduled to undergo posterior spinal fusion under general anesthesia. Due to his inability to lie supine, conventional tracheal intubation under direct laryngoscopy was difficult. Alternatively, face-to-face tracheal intubation using a lightwand in the semi-recumbent position was performed. Intubation was successful on the first attempt without any complications.
The face-to-face intubation technique using a lightwand is one of several alternative techniques for tracheal intubation in patients who cannot lie supine.
To compare diagnostic performance and confidence of a standard visual reading and combined 3-dimensional stereotactic surface projection (3D-SSP) results to discriminate between Alzheimer disease ...(AD)/mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and frontotemporal dementia (FTD).Ffluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET brain images were obtained from 120 patients (64 AD/MCI, 38 DLB, and 18 FTD) who were clinically confirmed over 2 years follow-up. Three nuclear medicine physicians performed the diagnosis and rated diagnostic confidence twice; once by standard visual methods, and once by adding of 3D-SSP. Diagnostic performance and confidence were compared between the 2 methods.3D-SSP showed higher sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive, and negative predictive values to discriminate different types of dementia compared with the visual method alone, except for AD/MCI specificity and FTD sensitivity. Correction of misdiagnosis after adding 3D-SSP images was greatest for AD/MCI (56%), followed by DLB (13%) and FTD (11%). Diagnostic confidence also increased in DLB (visual: 3.2; 3D-SSP: 4.1; P < 0.001), followed by AD/MCI (visual: 3.1; 3D-SSP: 3.8; P = 0.002) and FTD (visual: 3.5; 3D-SSP: 4.2; P = 0.022). Overall, 154/360 (43%) cases had a corrected misdiagnosis or improved diagnostic confidence for the correct diagnosis.The addition of 3D-SSP images to visual analysis helped to discriminate different types of dementia in FDG PET scans, by correcting misdiagnoses and enhancing diagnostic confidence in the correct diagnosis. Improvement of diagnostic accuracy and confidence by 3D-SSP images might help to determine the cause of dementia and appropriate treatment.
Purpose
The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of additional evaluation of left ventricular mechanical dyssynchrony (LVMD) by gated myocardial perfusion single-photon emission ...computed tomography (GMPS) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI) and multivessel disease.
Methods
One hundred and nine acute MI patients with >50 % stenosis in at least one non-culprit artery who underwent GMPS within 2 weeks were enrolled. All patients underwent successful revascularization of the culprit arteries. Those with previous MI, atrial fibrillation, or frequent ventricular premature complexes, cardiac devices, significant patient motion, or procedure-related events were excluded. Phase standard deviation (PSD) and phase histogram bandwidth (PBW) were measured for assessment of LVMD. Patients were followed up for a median of 26 months after index MI, for composite major adverse cardiac events (MACE), which consisted with all-cause death, unplanned hospitalization due to heart failure and severe ventricular arrhythmias (sustained ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation). Independent predictors of MACE were evaluated.
Results
MACE occurred in 22 patients (20 %). Stress PSD (53.3 ± 17.3° vs. 35.3 ± 18.9°;
p
<0.001), stress PBW (147.6 ± 54.6° vs. 96.8 ± 59.2°;
p
= 0.001) and resting PBW (126.8 ± 37.5° vs. 96.6 ± 48.9°;
p
= 0.001) were significantly higher in patients with MACE compared to those without. Multivariate analysis revealed that stress PSD ≥45.5° and stress PBW ≥126.0° were predictive of MACE, as well as suboptimal non-culprit artery revascularization (SNR) and renin-angiotensin system (RAS) blockade medication. Higher stress PSD and stress PBW were associated with poorer prognosis both in patients with and without SNR, and those with RAS blockade medication, but not in those without RAS blockade medication.
Conclusions
LVMD measured by GMPS showed added prognostic value in acute MI with multivessel disease. GMPS could serve as a comprehensive evaluation imaging tool in patients with acute MI and multivessel disease.
