Background: The specific ablation of Trp53 gene in mouse epidermis leads to the spontaneous development of aggressive squamous
cell carcinoma, a process that is accelerated by the subsequent loss of ...Rb gene. Materials and Methods: The possible mechanisms
leading to spontaneous tumor formation in epidermis in the absence of Trp53 were studied focusing on hair cycle defects, inflammation
and possible chromosomal instability (CIN). Results: Loss of p53 induces tumorigenesis primarily by mediating early CIN and,
to a minor extent, nuclear factor κB activation. Notably, CIN occurs not only in p53-deficient skin, but also in epidermis
lacking both Rb and Tp53 tumor suppressors, indicating a predominant role of this process in spontaneous tumorigenesis. Conclusion:
These data identify CIN as a major mechanism in tumorigenesis originated by Trp53 loss in stratified epithelia and imply that
therapies aimed to counterbalance CIN might be of relevance for the treatment of human cancer bearing impaired p53 functions.
Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a common human neoplasia, of poor prognosis and survival, which
frequently displays Akt overactivation. Previously, we reported that mice ...expressing high levels of constitutively Akt activity
(myrAkt) in oral epithelia develop lesions and tumors in the oral cavity. Materials and Methods: Functional genomics of primary
keratinocytes from different transgenic mouse lines and immunostaining of mouse and human samples were performed in order
to identify and validate putative biomarkers of oral cancer progression. Results: The expression of KLF4 was found to be increased
only in tumor prone samples from mice bearing overactivation of Akt. Such increased expression was confirmed in oral dysplasias
and tumors arising in those mice. Tissue microarray analysis of human samples confirmed the association between active Akt
and increased KLF4 expression. Conclusion: These data support the notion that KLF4 is potentially a reliable marker of HNSCC,
and that myrAkt transgenic mice are valuable tools for preclinical research of HNSCC.
This article investigates the origins, main characteristics and some of the campaigns organized by the Women's Socialist Group of Madrid (WSGM). It shows a general overview of the social diversity of ...WSGM's members and of the different strategies advanced by their leaders.
It argues that the WSGM played a decisive role in incorporating women from working-class backgrounds into the campaign for the recognition of women as full citizens, which was later achieved in the Constitution of the Second Republic in 1931.

This article contends that the movement in favour of the rights of women in Spain during the first third of the twentieth century was integrated into several international networks. Three exchanges ...are analysed between, on the one hand, the women socialists and suffragists in Spain,
and, on the other, the international networks built up by the German socialist Clara Zetkin, the suffragists of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance and the Portuguese feminist Ana de Castro Osório. Scrutiny of these 'intercrossings' reveals that, despite their 'asymmetrical'
outcomes, the demand for the social and political rights of women surpassed national boundaries and had a transformative impact on all the parties involved.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the sixth most common form of cancer worldwide. One frequent alteration found in this type of cancer is overactivation of the PI3K/PTEN/mTOR pathway, ...of which protein kinase B (PKB)/Akt is a central key element, controlling important cellular processes such as metabolism, cell size, proliferation and apoptosis, ultimately regulating cell growth and survival. Thus, drugs that target Akt directly or elements of the pathway are plausible candidates for cancer treatment. Accordingly, numerous clinical trials in various phases are being performed for these drugs. In this review, we discuss the tumorigenic capacity of Akt and focus on its role in HNSCC, paying special attention to the current efforts in treating this cancer in a more specific, Akt-targeted way, based on its primordial role in this type of cancer.
This article analyses the contacts established between socialist women leaders' in Spain and Germany by means of the theoretical framework of Entangled History. The study of these intercrossings and the initiatives to which they led had a transformative effect on both sides of the divide, although asymmetrical in nature. This trend within the transnational perspective allows us to overcome the limitations of traditional comparative history by analysing the multiple influences which explain the key processes of late modern European history, such as the struggle for the rights of women workers.
